INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

So sorry for ur loss. Roosters can do some damage. My turkey, Bob is walking like an elderly person too. But he still makes it up to the house for treats. So I am happy as long as he isn't suffering. I hope ur rock is suffering either and I hope she has a full recovery.
Thank you. She doesn't act like she is in pain. I have her running around the barn, with a few other hens. That way she is away from the rooster.

Hi ChickCrazed, There are several strains of MD and Lucy had one that affects the nervous system and organs. For many who have this strain, it comes and goes over time and then one day the chicken is just paralyzed or their organs shut down. My hens legs are responsive unlike when Lucy was sick, so I'm still hoping that this is something else. It really stinks because she is the most friendly chicken I have. She will come up to me and basically ask to be held anytime I go outside.

On another subject, I have missed a week of posts, so where did you find someone to give your chicken an acupuncture treatment? I have been wanting one for myself, but I have never thought of it for my pet. I will definitely look into the St. John's Wort treatment for Mareks. Thank you for the suggestion!

Awww I'm sorry. It always seems like it is the sweet ones that are affected. I did a lot of research on Mareks when Gregor first started having leg issues (although we still don't think that is what he has, i wanted to be prepared just in case). It is an interesting and horrible disease. I found it interesting what a mixed bag it is on whether to vaccinate or not. Because the vaccination doesn't prevent a bird from catching Mareks, just the horrible symptoms, some say that you shouldn't vaccinate because you won't know your flock is carrying it and will infect others unknowingly. Others obviously want to prevent their birds from suffering at all costs and vaccinate. Others seem to have no concept that the vaccination doesn't actually prevent Mareks and seem to think they are 100% safe from the disease. I went back and forth myself several times while reading people's opinions but none of mine are vaccinated. Since I am breeding I probably won't, I need to know if I have the disease in my flock so I don't unwittingly pass it on to others when I sell chicks. Interestingly enough hatching eggs are not affected and safe even from a Marek's infected flock. Definitely another point in favor of hatching your own chicks!

My parent's vet wanted to try acupunture on a chicken and offered to do Gregor. She normally does dogs and cats and seems to be willing to try chickens! I really do think I saw some improvement and will be taking him back this week for a follow up treatment. The practice was wonderful and gregor was quite the celebrity getting his picture taken with all the girls! There is another vet in Franklin (I think she said hillside) that does actually have a chicken specialist in the practice, but I don't know if they will do the acupuncture.

Man, my egg production has been TERRIBLE the last few weeks. Now granted, I only have 4 adult hens, but I am lucky if I get an egg or two a day out of them. My easter eggers in particular haven't been laying a darned thing! They are 100% free range now, plenty of dust bathing space and still getting supplemental feed in addition to free ranging. Roosters left a month ago and they have been a happy bunch since. Not sure what is going on!?!?!? I am waiting on 6 pullets to get started, they are around 20 weeks old so I keep expecting it! Actually one of the Marans pullets laid for a week and then stopped. I would like her to start up again!! The weather has been great so they don't have an excuse there!!! I guess I need to start looking for a hidden nest somewhere.....hmmmmmm
Mine seem to have dropped the last couple of weeks, too. We often find a new hiding place full of eggs, but we have looked pretty much everywhere we can think of for a new hiding spot & haven't been able to find one. Of course now I am getting enough customers I need every egg the girls lay. I'm having 4 to 6 dozen go out at a time. In about 3 months the number of layers I have will double...just waiting for them to grow up! We almost need more ducks (have 10 hens right now). I'm also getting more customers that either themselves or someone in their family is allergic to chicken eggs and want duck, along with others who like to add a dozen with their chicken eggs. I have a couple people who get 6 dozen duck eggs at a time about every other week. I'm thinking that this is an untapped, but needed, market...

Looking for suggestions, ideas, pictures, designs, drawings, etc. for the Official Indiana T-shirt. We would like to get as many submitted as possible. Please PM lilmizscareall with any ideas, suggestions, etc. Also any input on style, size, etc. would also be appreciated.

We are also still looking for input on the 2 options listed on the flyer for the pot luck/and or bbq, as well as volunteers for demos on FF, candling, or anything any one would like to demo, talk about or do.
We'd love to come, but that is the first Saturday of our fair & one of our rabbit show days....Nuts!

BTW-

SO HAPPY ABOUT CHICKENFEST!

I can't wait to see you all there. Its a great idea to have it at the campground to keep everyone's chickens safe, but Patrick, I will really miss seeing your gorgeous house.

I am not going to be able to go to chickenfest either! I am so disappointed. That is the first day of out county 4-H fair and one of the busiest days with check ins and everything and I said I would help out. I really thought I would be able to go this year.

Sometimes I just hate being right. This morning I thought for sure I was going to get sick. Sure enough not even 15 mins later, I got sick. I like sitting around on the computer, but I had stuff that I wanted to do today!
