Okay....saying it again....
When I candled the eggs from my broody I saw nothing. By somewhere around 16-18 days I could tell that they were dark and solid. That's it. All of the dark solid ones hatched.
By that same time I could tell if the interior was "sloshing". (No chick)
So....my point is that if I had tossed them before that I would likely have tossed live chicks. I just was NEVER able to see anything inside prior to that. By that time they were heavy and solidly dark and produced chicks.
My DH goes to WGU and it is great. They pair you up with a mentor and it is all work at your own pace/online. You pay for 6 months of school at a time, but you can complete as many courses as you can. It's a nonprofit so tuition is reasonable compared to other online colleges.Non chicken question ~
Any recommendations for a business masters program that is 100% online and not too costly?
Quote: Thank you so much I know what I'll be researching for a while now. The pay by the time frame would be so much better if my Dh was not working full time and he could devote himself to finishing it faster. I wonder how it impacts financial aid, if we even qualify.

Lots of things to consider here. How bright is the light? Do you have a rubber attachment to make all of the light go in the egg? How porous are the eggs? How dark are the eggs? Is the air bubble growing in size at all?
I have trouble using my dollar store flashlight on dark porous eggs but i can see the air bubble growing. Porous eggs are hard to hatch in an incubator as they dry out so easily.
As for the hen getting skinny, maybe some chopped liver right under her nose and you hiding to see if she eats it, My broodies would not eat in front of me but as soon as I was around the corner I could hear their cackling and the meat was gone.
bradselig is in Warren, Indiana and just posted he has silkie eggs for sale. Also, you can check out the member list to find out if someone is closer: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...dC1LT3NiWkd0eGVkdnJHRm9Gcy1GNGc&rm=full#gid=0.I just found this thread. I have 4 golden comets, 5 barred rocks, and 1 jersey giant. All hens. I am in Mooresville. I am interested in finding a silkie or two to add to the flock. I don't suppose there is anyone close that has one for sale??

It locks you out until the next day-I think it resets at Midnight. I also like to give ovations than always commenting, especially if I am catching up on posts. Wish I could give ovations the same way I can like things on Facebook.I managed to get way behind on reading cause of a busy weekend. So I was getting caught up today and all of a sudden I could no longer click to like something - now I see it says "You are over your limit in rating content" - anyone else had that happen? And how long till I can like something again? It just seemed simpler to click that I liked something and make a brief comment instead of junking the thread up with all my comments!
I do have a question. My girls (at least right now I think they are all girls!) were 8 weeks Monday. We are wondering when it's okay to start letting them free range. We are in the city with a fenced in yard. I already know who will be first over the fence, she is the most inquisitive and adventurous, but the lower chain link is the side with the wonderful neighbors who love them almost as much as we do. The other side has a really high privacy fence that right now I don't think they could make it up on.
Just wondering when we should start letting them explore!
PeacefulWalls ~ If you're the Chairwoman! lolI'm really wishing we could go, but we'll be knee deep in our fair activities at that point! Would anyone be interested in a 2nd gathering in northern Indiana perhaps this fall?
You can get financial aid for this school, DH had to fill out the FAFSA and was able to get aid and loans. He works full time too and does school work before/after work and then on the weekend. Takes a lot of dedication and I don't get to see him much-hence why I am spending so much time with our honeybees and chickens solo. He's been in school for about 3 years and graduates this fall with a BS in IT. Can't wait!Thank you so much I know what I'll be researching for a while now. The pay by the time frame would be so much better if my Dh was not working full time and he could devote himself to finishing it faster. I wonder how it impacts financial aid, if we even qualify.

I'm thinking the aid is drastically decreased for getting a masters. It was when I tried for mine. I ended up getting a local fellowship but without that it would have been a pay my own way kind of thing. But that was back a few years.
