INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Love that shed coop!!! My idea is very similar but I can't afford my dream coop...YET!

Got the shed for $250 through Habitat for Humanity ReStore when they were gleaning properties that were being taken out for a highway widening.

We had to move it from the property. Luckily we knew someone that had a trailer and equipment. He moved it and set it on blocks.

the rest of the stuff was all material we had except for the hardware cloth.

I COULDN'T and wouldn't have done it on my own... my husband did all the interior stuff.

OK, so I'm getting the idea that we need to add MORE ventilation and stop worrying about the cold. Nice to know our birds will share our attitude about the cold. Thanks!
Yup, and especially if you get cold-hardy breeds! They'll do just fine in the winter weather. :)
:drool I love your coop! Mine is a shed as well, but I didn't make a separate human area inside. And, of course, we built on the addition for more space, so it has kind of changed from being obviously a shed to looking more like a coop or barn. ETA a picture. :) Don't mind the mess, I'm still figuring out that front step. This was last summer, which should tell you how much progress I have made in that effort.

I also recently switched from sand to shavings in my coop. I have mixed feelings on it, but I lean toward the shavings. Anyway, my point in mentioning it is that I also recently found out that 2x4s are not going to keep the chickens from kicking shavings out of the coop. So that is something else to keep in mind when planning your coop, EurekaChic. :)

I soooo love Silkies!!!! Only downfall with them is their eggs are sooooo small! LOL I plan on buying a couple "pairs" from peeps at the fest!
We (dd and I) have fallen in love with silkies. We thought we were goign to be getting a couple, I think that may have fallen through though. I wish I had the money to buy some at chickenfest, but I just can't afford to buy ones as old as I'd like them to be. I'll be going out of town in August and don't want to leave little chicks, too much can happen. So it is looking like silkies may be my dd's chicken project for next year. She has already told me she wants silkies for her birthday next March. Possibly polish too. Then she said "I wonder what a cross between a polish and a silkie would look like?". I told her she wouldn't be able to show them at 4-H and she said "So? I can still love them". She has decided that two silkie eggs would be a perfect size for her breakfast!

In reference to your ovation comment -My husband has Celiacs, dd is gluten intolerant. Since Celiacs runs in my husbands side of the family I guess she may be on the way there.

@EurekaChic We did a shed too. My husband built some dividing walls inside and I'm able to gather eggs from the "people side". We did insulate with styrofoam and covered the walls with a metal sheeting he has for signs (he makes signs, banners, etc. as a side business and he had the sheet metal for substrates...he gets them cheap.) I do like the look of a shed on the outside too. Our interior walls are hardware cloth to help prevent against predators. I leave the front doors open all summer and some of the winter depending on temperature and wind direction.
Love the idea of a 'people side', maybe we'll have to get a bigger shed so we can do that. Thanks for all the great pics of your shed. We'll have to check out our local Restore store and CL to see if we can find a 'cheeper' (haha) shed.

Definitely need a "kick board" of sorts around the bottom edge to keep the shavings in.

 Well, the 2x4s were supposed to be the kick board, but the girls kick the shavings right over them! I'm probably going to replace them with a 2x6 for a little more height.

Now it's a matter of whether Frou-Frou will be able to get over a 2x6 to get into the coop. She flies into the coop without using the steps, but then she has difficulty stepping over the stepping stones when she's out free-ranging (they're so tall, almost 2 inches!). She was already destroyed that I replaced her nesting material, since she insists on nesting on the ground instead of in the boxes. Goofy bird!

. Keep trolling craigslist for a used shed, all sorts of good stuff comes across there but you have to check often to be the first one to take advantage!

True - we lucked out to be the first to claim the free big wood playhouse listed yesterday. There was a shed too but in bad shape. There have been several free sheds lately but not necessarily in good shape. The nice one from yesterday went quickly.
