INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Well, I removed the eggs. Margie is so upset.

She's wandering around, clucking like she's trying to call her eggs back. I feel bad, but I don't want to risk an 'eggsplosion'.

I performed an eggtopsy (sorry for all the egg puns, but that's a term I've seen on here before!). None of them popped, thankfully. Of the 9 eggs, 3 were greenish and rotten, and another was kind of grayish and rotten. 2 more looked almost scrambled, like the yolk had mixed in with the white somehow? They were not shipped eggs and were never shaken, so I'm not sure how that happened. Not a single egg was fertile.

So I guess this means that Po is officially and totally gone. I will miss him and I so regret that I made the mistake that cost him his life.

Thanks, everyone, for putting up with me for the past few weeks.
I am so sorry! Silkies need to be in the dictionary under broody, no kidding.

Anone else see this commercial, and every time the lady puts the watermelon rinds into the trash think, "No! There are chickens out there who would love those!"?
YES

Quote: Great news!

Does anyone want a lavender male guinea? He's our only remaining guinea and he's worn out my patience. I just got the sweetest birds from Brad and he is beating up the cochin without mercy. He hasn't actually hurt her yet, but I'm worried it's just a matter of time. I actually locked him out of the coop last night I was so mad. He's meaner than dirt and he needs to go. Perhaps he'd do better with other guineas to keep him in line?
I may know someone... let me find out.

My hens feathers arent growing back from roo damage. I am at a loss. Blueberry my big cochin is the only mature boy out there now with 22 hens. How is it they are possibly still sustaining damage or just not healing. Most feathrs are broken, so doens that mean They have to wait for molt to get them back?????
My hens are all still bald from my Roos and they left weeks before Gus did. I'd say it is normal since we are in the same boat! I also don't have a roo out there with them so I know it isn't further damage, it just has not filled back in.
Yep if broken, not pulled, they will keep them til molt.

My broody cochin that I had posted about, quit being broody the next day lol. Apparentely I am just great at breaking broodies. I wanted her to sit on eggs. I moved her nicer location, seperated from everyone else and gave her some fertile eggs and she decided she didn't want to sit on them.

The Ameraucanas are getting big. I don't know if they were practicing flood warning or what, but I caught 4 of them on top of the dog house they refuse to use.

And d'uccle

ETA: Fix the whole post, because at one in the morning I forget how to use the english language lol. (I still didn't spell half the words right)

LOVE the AMs!

Quote: I have had a lot of broodies this year, not liking it. Every one of my australorps are broody and I pull them off the nests several times a day. making me crazy! My other hens are laying in front of the nestboxes because they cant get in them. Time to add more boxes I guess.
My EE Bunny and her BA buddy *unnamed" hatched me 4 chicks a few days ago out of my egg flock, UGH. These 2 hens are ferocious. Even the geese won't challenge them! I just couldn't take them away. left them with the mommas. Its too precious to watch them teaching these little babies about life.

Babies first day out with mom.

Greeting Hoosiers! Our Blue Australorp was taken by a raccoon last month up at our farm in Eaton, who broke in through the siding. I was looking to find another Blue Australorp, since it was the favorite, and named "Eggy," by my 8 year old middle son, who is currently undergoing a bone marrow transplant at Riley to battle his Leukemia. He and I would video chat in the morning to let the chickens out and look for eggs. It helps him stay connected to home while in the hospital for 7 weeks. He always wanted to know how Eggy was doing! I still haven't broke the news to him! And, am hoping to find another Blue Australorp, "Eggy II," to add to the flock. I'm hoping my fellow Hoosiers might have suggestions?
Sorry to hear about both your son and your Blue, my niece battled Leukemia for years I know Riley is the best place to be. My preys are with you both I hope by this time he is recovering well.

On a less crappy note, here are my 7 week olds. Their new brooder in the coop, and a few of Casper and Sheldon. :)

more beautiful birds,

Our Indiana summer short-notice tornado left our chickens in their coop to fend for themselves, and a tiny bathroom full of house inhabitants waiting for the all clear.
It's still raining buckets, but when it slows down a bit, I'll go out and check on the girls.
Thinking of all the West-siders that had a close tornado call this afternoon...
hope everything turned out great, will probably find out when I start back up with the " catching up " tomorrow, very cute pups.

ok now it's picture time...

today had the grand kids and a couple of their friends over, they live in the city so this is the first time they are seeing most of these critters. Sorry about the pic's, I took them with my phone cause the camera was dead.

this is how I spent my day off and loved every minute of it... even thou I didn't get a thing done.
