INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Mom is an australorpe that went broody so I went and got eggs from brad they are only 3 days old. One is a silkie & the other 2 are cream legbars. I think the cold front and humidity level messed up the others ones they developed but didn't hatch:(

Margo keeps pushing her prolapse back out and it has gotten worse with more tissue being pushed out

. I know she has lived longer than most chickens are allowed, and has had a nice semi-retirement. I am still not happy about the decision I am going to have to make very soon...At this point she has had internal tissue hanging out for 3 days and even if I somehow manage to get it back in (which is not looking good) I think the risk of infection is very high.

Man it has been a rough couple of months!

I decided to go ahead and lightly dust the broody wyandotte, hopefully the dust will dissipate before the chicks arrive. I also cleaned her nest out, hopefully she doesn't poop it up too much before they hatch! I got my first look at the eggs since putting them under her, one of them looks like it got crushed early on by her gigantic wyandotte booty. The other 5 were all nestled in place just fine. I considered candling but didn't. At least I know that at most i will have 5 hatch. Looking forward to seeing some tiny fluffy butts! I also have to say, for a fairly unfriendly bird my broody has been very good about me reaching under her face in the nest to change out her food. I haven't been pecked once (even though she growls at me).

Hi Everyone! We returned last night from Chickenfest including two nights in Indy staying with friends and visiting our oldest DD. I am exhausted!

I put together these photos from Chickenfest. Hope everyone can read the captions. BYC has photo size limits.
I thought I had taken more photos, and I especially hated not having a photo of CrazedChick!

I will check in later-- I want to go outside with my flock. I missed them so much just being gone for a weekend. It's a little weird, but I'm sure you understand.

Thanks for posting pics with everyone's names. Even though we couldn't attend it helps to feel even more connected to everyone!!

I also had a great time at chickenfest and appreciate all the hard work you ladies out into it for us!

I stopped at our county fair today and wow was it pathetic! I sold birds to several people (all of which were way to young and not developed enough, IMO) and found out they were classing them by meat birds, white egg layers and exotics. Nothing about their true classes (asiatic, feather foot bantam, etc). Majority of the hens had all thei back feathers missing from being bred, sickly chickens (silkies eye matted shut), and no variety. I honestly have a larger variety at my house than I saw there. Barred rocks being shown as exotics! Not one bird appeared to be conditioned or cleaned for showing. Majority were meat birds (Cornish crosses). It was a serious let down. I was hoping to find some nice birds locally to get new breeders from. Definitely not going to happen!
Are you planning on coming ot Goshen to check out our fair?

They will in time, My youngest BR turkey hen was doing that too, and some of the BAs did.
Looking forward to adding Gandalf! His colors are very interesting!

OMG so well done!! Love putting faces with names! Wish I wasn't out of ovations for the day already cause you deserve it M2H!

Not sure who it was that posted earlier about their corn but here's the first silks I've seen on mine just today. It's been tasseling for about 10 days. We had some wind damage at the beginning if July and I had to stand some if mine back up too.

Believe it or not I planted all this at the same time !

I also have been waiting for my leghorns to start laying. I found these beauties in the straw stack in the barn this evening. There was a fifth that had gotten knocked out onto the floor and broken. The brats fly the fence every morning as soon as I let them out despite having a wing clipped!!

How are people's corn crops this year?
Ours got blown over during an intense thunderstorm, but we stood it back up best we could.
Now, most of the stalks look good, but I expected to see tassels and ears with silk by now.
I have very, very tall corn, but only one teeny tiny ear on one plant.

You both definitely have mine beat! Grew corn in the same spot last year, didn't plant it this year and still got a few stalks, hoping with the honeybees it will be enough for pollination. There are berry plants and some sunflowers mixed in the same spot. The stalks are taller than our beehives (though maybe not for long, need to add one more deep and another super to the hive on the left).

What a let down! Sounds very unlike any poulty barn I've been to at a fair. Even at our dinky fair there were a lot of birds, properly classified and cleaned up. Only thing I noticed was the cornish crosses were way past their prime and looked uncomfortably large. Not sure how far away Elkhart is from you, but their fair, as PeacefulWalls can attest, is AMAZING and well worth the drive. It is one of the largest 4H fairs in the entire country and even own 4hfairs.org domain.

Oh and one thing about our 4-h fair (and I know this is common at others too) is people entering EEs as ameraucanas and Araucanas! The as thing is te kids don't know what they are and the adults enter as that for them.

And the fact that they aren't broke up into classes as they should be bothers me too.

That is why I don't like showing at the county fair. It doesn't even feel like a show. Not ran good and feels like a joke. The reason I like Lebanon's show so much is because I like how serious and professional it is.
