INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Ok y'all. I'm at a loss... For the last 2 weeks my ladies egg production has plummeted! I have 8 (out of 16) girls that are around a year old. We normally get 5-7 eggs a day. We are lucky if we get any right now. There was not a single egg yesterday. It's like they all got together and decided to go on strike. I think a couple may be molting, but definitely not all of them. Any ideas what could have caused the extreme change and what to do about it. For the first time since they started laying we don't have a single egg in the fridge! If I have to go to buy store eggs when I have 16 birds I'm gonna lose it.

is there anything spooking them? maybe a new cat in the area? or did something change, changes can cause a temporary stop in egg laying?

If you were closeer I would sell you some duck eggs.

If anyone else is close to Bargersville and wants duck eggs, please let me know.

So use few eggs I've been setting, I've been very happy with the results! I'm hatching pretty much all showgirls from my silkie/showgirl pens! 4 partridge, and 3 (2 still in hatcher drying out) blues! Can't wait to see how they turn out!

Also have this little polish I hatched out of tolbunt/silver laced polish breeding (lady had a silver laced roo in with her tolbunts. Was hoping to get pure chicks but didn't happen lol)

And these "tolbunt" chicks that I hatched from eggs I bought. Look like I got hosed yet again and ended up with white crested blacks?

No Tolbunts?!?!?! So much sadness, though they are still stinking cute!

Is anyone else having trouble with flies this year? We hardly had any problems with them last year, but they are terrible this year. Do any birds eat them? I know my chickens ignore them, but was wondering about Guineas or Muscovys?
Have you tried the hanging fly traps? They smell like rotting animal carcass, but they work really well.

Well, the rooster is gone, the guinea is gone, I added two pullets and we did kind of adopt a stray cat. He's been hanging around for a few months now, but he doesn't really care about the chickens. They are pretty terrified of him though. I guess all those things could upset the apple cart... Any idea how long until things get back to normal?

Yup flys are bad at my place too! DH sprayed the cows and the barns last week but it didn't seem to help the coop much. The guineas I had wouldn't touch them and my chickens don't either :(

It looks like my broody duck is giving up. She has not been on the nest since around 9 am this morning. At least she did not try to bite me when I took the newest eggs away. But now I still have a dozen eggs that are going to be chicken food if she does not get back on by tomorrow.

Could they be molting? My old ladies molt around this time every year and stop laying.

I am so glad to hear that everyone else is, too. I thought it was just me. My flock has just gotten the run area beaten down to bare dirt, and the number of flies congregating on the poop has been incredible.

I threw down some old litter from the coop into the run, and that has really helped. But they're still pretty bad!
