Incase any if you towards Indy are still interested in the Ameraucana cockerel. I will be traveling from bluffton Indiana to the entrance if the state fair. Traveling on I-69. I could meet at an exit right off the interstate. Will drive about 15-20 mins off of the interstate but no farther. On this Wednesday. Will be leaving at 10, which puts us at te state fair around noon. Have to have him gone on the way down if I take him. I have a blue and a splash available

Nice article - thanks for the link. The rooster in the pic sure looks like Chewbacca or something else from outer space! Definitely chickens as pets are catching on. A few weeks ago my DH and I saw one of those shows on HGTV where a team (brothers, actually) comes in and helps you fix up your home so you can sell it, and the owner of the house had a pet silkie hen that was always sitting on her shoulder while they filmed her. It was pretty cute (although I worried about it being a lone chicken - aren't chickens happier in groups?).

I have never seen a buff silkie with green-black tail feathers. He is a strange one for sure! I agree chickens should be with other chickens. They just seem to always want friends. I will have to find that episode on demand cause I watch that show with the two brothers and haven't seen that one!

Hi all - just wanted to post an update from our dog attack from july 09 that killed 3 hens & severely damaged our Iowa Blue Rooster :
Well, one month later he's still alive - we've had to hold him up 3~4 times a day to eat; had antibiotic shots for the first couple weeks; had been using triple antibiotic ointment on 1/3 of his body, then switched to a prescription cream after that for the bite/puncture wounds. He has lost alot of weight. He is able to hop around on his good leg, but his injured may not ever function again (but we hope it will eventually).
We started saving all the eggs we could after that to put into the incubator, thinking just in case he didnt make it or may never sire babies again . hatch is expected around aug 20th - also have some EEs & some of his son's added to fill it up. So depending on how many hatch, there's a good chance we'll have some IaB chicks (& EEs) available if anyone might be interested in some. we are due to candle tomorrow nite & then again before lockdown.

So guys.. whats your plan going into next year? I am looking at the species and breeds we have now.. Holler out what your plans are next year!

Next year I hope to be out of town and into the country. I hope to have a silkie breeding program, I hope my Mille Fleurs are laying well and the guinea is fitting in (and convinced she is a silkie not a loud guinea!). I hope we can get some polish laced too.

This is Shorty, 6 week old MF, we call her that due to her broken upper beck. She now resides in the special needs pen with Baby Girl & Honey after she recovers of course, I hope. But for now her and Baby Girl seem to be getting along fine.

They think they are going to sleep outside tonight, I think they aren't, wanna take bets on who is right come dark???? lol They wouldnt come out or the create so I took the create away. They not happy one little bitty bit.

Love these pics! I will share them with my cousin for sure, he will be so happy. Love the cabin set up. I forgot that the hen hatched out her own clutch a while back, they are about the same age as the chick I got from him. Will be happy to see them grow up. I really hope Shorty makes it, I know she's in good hands!

I guess this family moved from Greenwood to the near-east side of Indy, so they could live with the people they wanted to minister to. It seems like there's someone on this thread who lives on the near-east side of Indy, and was working on getting a playhouse-coop approved or something.

My niece who lives in Minneapolis took my nephew’s sons to the Minnesota Zoo, which even features an educational area about chickens! I was so excited that I had to check out their website (haven’t been there in years), and I found these interesting facts:

Smart Chickens
Studies prove that if you show a chicken an object, and then hide it, the chicken realizes that the object still exists—something human toddlers aren’t always able to understand.

Chicken Sweets
Unlike people, chickens can’t have a “sweet tooth.” While they can taste salt, they can’t tell which foods are sweet. Besides, chickens have no teeth!

@hogster160 sorry about your chicks I tried to move my broody away from the flock but she freaked out. I gave her one of the nest boxes and put a mesh cover over her so no one can get in or bother her but she can still see everyone. Admittedly she probably had more eggs under her than was comfortable so I guess for now I'll just watch her. I think @CCCCCCCCHICKENS suggested moving them to an incubator but I didn't have a whole lot of luck with my hatching rate this spring so I think I'll just see how my bird does.

@Mother2Hens I'm in danville but no silkies here. Just LF mutt eggs. I hope you find something for miss Bonbon! Also are you still willing to do avatar pics? I think it's about time to change mine!

3rd week photos are done! If you compare to the photos in my previous post, you may notice 2 who look totally different. Molly is turning buff and a silkie expert on the Silkie thread says she thinks she'll be porcelain. Also Martha is turning grey partridge, she started out as a yellow chick. These were all taken outside this time so you can really see the colors. Vera, the guinea, was actually really good for me and I got so many good pics from her. She is so wild but I am hoping raising her with silkies and handling her daily will calm her down.



We also built a new coop for the chicks on Saturday. Took 12 hours (with 2 runs to the hardware store) and about $200 (the coop is a dog house from RK). The run is 3'x'3'x6'. I am working on a blog post to show how to build since it is so cheap and easy/quick to put together. Will post that here once it's done. The first coop we built is about a year old, same style and has kept all the predators out so far. I've even seen some cats even sleep on top of it to stay warm in winter. We've got sand in the run for the older coop, just not sure where we're going to put this in the yard so we didn't add it in yet.



I've been eyeing this porch swing-style bird feeder for months, since it was end of season Lowe's had it on closeout and I couldn't resist. (I've also seen it at TSC) There's room for feed in the bottom of the swing. Rita the MF flew on it once, but by the time I got my camera out and on, she flew back to the coop. The chicks are slowly getting more comfortable coming out of the coop, but enjoying all the room in the coop compared to the brooder.



The adult chickens don't seem to pay any attention to the chicks or their new coop. They were outside free ranging all day while we built the second coop. Here's our rooster Top Knot. He's got his hands full with 6 silkie hens, 2 pullets (hoping anyways!) and 4 MF pullets. But he still manages to find time to come and pose for me while I take photographs around the yard. LOL

Thanks. She wasn't suppose to be on the saw. Apparently I need to move it. She isn't actually suppose to be out there, but he does what she wants lol

You should be using brown type color for your posts--haha-- I just use it because it makes it easier to differentiate my posts from others when I am looking for something or keeping track of one of those long, connected posts/responses. In other words, it's a coping mechanism for old people!
