INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

if you have a cage that has lager enough mesh that the snake can get into put an egg in it. The snake will swallow the egg and cant get out. Also you put golf balls out for them to swallow. They wont be able to digest he golf ball and will die. This would be a long painful death though.

I guess yesterday was Honey's good day. She is dying sitting in my lap. I guess she will go see her man now. I'm sad but I also am tired of seeing her suffer. Its time to let go I think. I will bury her next to her king.  It wont be long now.

My heart is breaking for you. I read your post with tears into eyes. I'm so sorry! I pray she doesn't suffer long. Her King is waiting.

For anyone following the calcium carbonate size "great debate," I put the smaller, dissolvable 99% pure CaCO3 pellets right next to my oyster shell calcium, and it is obvious that there was greater consumption of the smaller pellets. They all have their choice and I plan to leave it that way.

Today's issue is an impacted crop in one of my older hens. I've been massaging it (it's not that hard--softer than when you make meatloaf, but I can feel some long fibers in there), and also gave her a capsule of docusate sodium sulfate to help keep it soft. I ordered things I might need if it comes to surgery--if she manages to hang on 2-3 days. She is in daughter's bathroom with nothing but water and my kitty's bed lined with an incontinence pad, since I could feel that she has an egg coming and might be looking for a nesting area.

Everyone keep your fingers crossed that my supplies get here in time, or that she recovers just from the frequent massages and holding off food. I lost a pullet with a very hard grass impaction earlier this year (and yes, the grass was cut to 2" before she got to have any). I'd like to not have a repeat. These Australorp hens are very good layers. She's 3-1/2 and still laying a decent number of eggs.

My first egg from this girl (who I got from racinchickins, with big help from Barb) just hatched!

Hi all! Is anyone planning on attending the swap meet in Knox on Sept 14? I'm bringing some partridge wyandotte bantams, and was hoping to pick up a few different breeds while there. Anyone have faverolle bantams?

OK, I went into panic mode last night... realized I didn't have an indoor brooder for my new babies when they come this week.... so I made one... I posted all the images and video here (https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/918511/my-indoor-brooder) as a 1st time owner... you all think this is ok for the 1st week or so for 10 hens?

what is the floor going to be? 1/4 inch hardwar cloth is the largest non solid floor I would use for new chicks. I would cover it with paper towels or cheap cabinet liner too for the first week. Then as the droppings fall onto the plywood I would have that covered with newspaper at least 4 layers thick. If the plywood is going to be the floor I would fill in the triangle spaces so the chicks don't dig out the chips and somehow get trapped in a corner. Also it has been my experience that the light needs to be closer to the chicks the first week even inside. The entire cage does not need to be 95 but at least 1/4 of it should be.
