INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Quote: Ah. That helps. That means mom was a Dark Brahma. Dad would be Egyptian Fayoumi.

I'm taking one of my quick trips to Indy. I have my quarterly voice treatment I've mentioned before (for Spasmodic Dysphonia). Since my DD in Bloomington still has my car, I'll take DH's car, and he'll have to have DS drive him to work and back. DD needs to find a vehicle. Anyway, in Indy I'll get to see my older DD and her new apartment in a beautiful house in Woodruff Place. And I'm getting three Black Bantam Cochin --possible frizzle eggs from @ellymayRans for Bonbon who's been sitting on unfertilized silkie eggs for over a week.
I used to live in Woodruff Place. It's a very interesting area. Some of those old Victorian houses are so ornate. They're pretty, but a nightmare to take care of. I really liked the vibe when I lived there.

My first egg from this girl (who I got from racinchickins, with big help from Barb) just hatched!

We are on Day 18. Had 3 Coronation Sussex and 1 BCM. All candled well at day 10. Today, 2 crushed eggs without any chick (or chick bodies) were in the nest. It's this Broody's first clutch. Don't know if she's going to be a bad mom or if something else went on in the coop today. I'm very bummed, though. The 2 remaining CS eggs candled great. Hope whatever happened today doesn't happen for the next 3 days. :(
Bummer! I hope you don't lose any more. I had 2 smashed eggs around day 10 but things have seemed to be ok since. I haven't candeled though since most of the eggs she has are BCM eggs is figured I wouldn't be able to see anything anyway.
R.I.P Honey, I know your Arthur was waiting for you. You haven't been happy since he left. You will be missed. Sorry people but I just had to.
So sorry! :(

I've got to say, all the talk about no swimming until a week old is enough to get someone paranoid with their first ducklings. :barnie So yesterday, my widdle Wibbles was breathing really hard when I got back from harp, and that was pretty much an immediate panic situation for me! It was like she was gasping for breath, and she kept itching at her face and shaking her head, and I was terrified that I had somehow killed her or something! So I searched BYC for 'duckling breathing hard', 'duckling gasping for breath', 'duckling itching face', everything I could think of! Nothing was quite right, though. The results I was getting were for ducklings that were clearly weak or dying, and Wibbles was certainly neither of those (although I may have thought she was dying for a moment--I can't help it  )! I took a moment to check her out, another thing she protested, and realized her nostril was plugged up by something. Uh-oh! And Wibbles did not want her nose wiped, that was for sure!

So I searched 'duckling's nose plugged'. Bingo! I found a thread in which a similarly aged duckling was going through exactly what Wibbles was, and the advise given was to give them a bath. This seems like exactly what everyone says not to do, but it worked for that duckling, and so I decided to take the risk.

One very warm, wet bath later, and Wibbles was breathing again! Phew! And then by this morning, her nose was plugged again! :barnie

I guess what I'm taking from this is that people need to be more clear about this sort of thing for newbies like me!! I was so scared that letting her get wet at this age would kill her, so I only gave her enough water to drink, and it resulted in her getting her nose all plugged up. Now Wibbles will be getting a warm bath every day, and I'll be upgrading her water dish to allow her to clean her nose out when she needs to. Long story short, don't let the 'experts' scare you--baby duckies need supervised baths to clean themselves in from the start.

Anyway, here is Wibbles during her bath last night. This was toward the end and she was sleepy, so there's not a whole lot of action. Also, don't mind the chicken noises in the background. That was just some nest box drama as heard through the baby monitor. After this, I was drying her off and when I rubbed her head, she squinted her eyes and looked up at me like, 'Ahhhh!' :love She is so cute!!

Sorry people but I just had to.
I was so happy to hear she was doing so well yesterday, and now saddened to see your loss, but you loved and cared for her so well when she was here - she will live forever in your heart :) My thoughts go out to you today

She is so cute!!
I've never owned a duck as an adult (raised with them as a child) so I know nothing about how to care and raise them.... Right now I am in the process of learning the chickens (get my 1st flock of girls at the end of this week - cant wait) but once I master chicks... perhaps I'll try ducks next - but that may be years to come still LOL Cause I want to know everything about 1 species 1st! LOL But your little duckling is adorable!!

So someone said they like to see chicky pictures. I went out and took some of my little ones and my favorite rooster Foghorn, who I think is just amazingly beautiful.

This is Romeo and Juliet!

This is Ozzy, I am looking for him a Harriet.

My favorite Rooster Foghorn!!

Can anyone tell me if this is a rooster? It is much bigger than my known girls, and it looks like it has pointed feathers. I am really hoping for a boy.. I need a RIR rooster.

Thanks for looking. I hope everyone enjoyed the chicky pics. I just love all my babies.

Anyone else having ridiculous hawk visitations? Pretty soon I'm going to know the neighborhood hawks so well that they'll be coming up to eat out of my hand. At least one is already not afraid of my presence at all.

I have multiple screeching toddlers that yell GO AWAY HAWK and run in the same direction that the hawk is flying. and on high energy days the children add in arm flapping and waving too. Then the ducks start in which causes the rooster / grow out pen to decide to add to the chorus. Lastly the turkeys will start making their turkey sound and even fly into the netting on the side of their pen. We have had more hawks over head but no landings for a couple of weeks. I'm thinking after we process the largest roosters on Sunday that might change.

PS: @SallyinIndiana uses a heavy bird netting. Hopefully she can show some photos and the link, again, to where she gets it in case anyone is interested.

This stuff comes rolled up from corner to corner NOT side to side like wrapping paper on a roll. So if you are going to cut section off to fit a wall of the run or a door, please unroll it all the way and tack it down in the grass with tent stakes. Then start cutting.
Quote: no good deed goes unrewarded. We are thinking of getting a truck next tax refund so a ways off. But if you find a superb deal, please keep us in mind. It would be a farm style old truck not the fancy fit the entire family with AC and all of the extras tossed in. Just something we could use to go pick up feed in and a buck for mating season.

EDITING to add Ideal Hatchery is running a hatch day special. Red female chicks for under $2 with shipping, minimum order is 25 to get the best prices.
