TSC here in town. I have already burnt this weeks bags but will get a pic of the next for you. It does not say pellet on the bag, had to have a girl that worked there tell me which it was. A friend told me they had it is the only way I knew.

Momma broody seems to be doing well. She has at least 4 dry chicks under there! So far she's hatched as well as I can

What a good girl!

Well, the farmers almanac has officially announced that they are predicting a Winter that is even colder and more snowy than last year.....I am not sure how I can survive another bad Winter. My heated dog bowl waterer did not survive last winter, so I need another option this year and have multiple pens (although I am going to try to get down to 2 pens for winter. I currently have nipple waterers but I don't think there is much I can do to keep them from freezing if it gets that cold again. I also have a bunch of new trees and my last group of new trees didn't survive last winter. Any ideas on how to help these trees through a tough Winter?

I'm also bummed because last Winter killed off all the buds on my fruit trees and I had a pathetic crop this year, another bad Winter means another bad year for fruit.
My trees didn't do to bad except for the peach, Not one darn peach!!

Well I think the farmers almanac also said this summet wqs supposed to be the hottest summer ever as well. I wouldnt hold my breath.
I've never bought a farmers almanac, But know people that swear by it for some things.Sure hope it is wrong on this winter.

And, in sad news, I came hope to a dead Bielefelder pullet. They had all been doing great and looked great. She was dead, jammed in a corner of the run with her head under a portion that sticks out. She didn't seem to be stuck (my first thought was that she got stuck and panicked). I don't have any idea what happened and am sad about the whole thing. :hit
ChickCrazed: so sorry to hear this sad news.

FiveWire:I get my pellets from Petco as repeat delivery. Browns 20lb bag is $12 bucks shipped to my door. I love it! http://m.petco.com/product/113167/B...-Chicken-Feed.aspx?CoreCat=LN_BirdFood_Browns

ChickCrazed: we used heat tape on our nipple waterer and it kept everything functioning and non-frozen.

One of the two has hatched...anxiously awaiting the other one...

Woo Hoo!!! Great news!!! I'm impressed that she is letting you touch it! My airhead BLRW mama won't let me near them without flogging me. Then she will wander off and lose one or two and when I try to "help" by picking a shrieking chick up to bring back to her, I get flogged again. LOL.

Also, thanks for the idea on the heat tape. I was thinking about a floating de-icer in the top, but since heat rises I don't want it freezing at the bottom where the nipples are. The heat tape got hot enough to work last winter? I could wrap the bottom completely which would hopefully keep the nipples warm.

You're right-- I forgot about the floating pond de-icer that we have in the main water tank. Oops-sorry! Yes, the combination of the 2 worked incredibly well.
The addition of the heat tape was key--at first I used only the tank de-icer and the PVC with the nipples in it froze and burst.

Been getting a lot of eggs from my girls lately. Any suggestions as to what I can do with extra eggs that we don't use? We have been giving some away to friends but still not enough to matter. I have 25 hens
and don't want to part with any of them. If I chose to sell eggs how much should I sell them per dozen?
We are pretty close to Chicago, and eggs sell for more here than they seem to in Central Indiana. I sold eggs this spring for $3/dozen and if the customer brought me back the carton I'd give them 50 cents off the next dozen. My cousin in Terre Haute sells hers for $2/dozen no refund for cartons.

I am not from Indiana but I was invited to this thread by kabhyper1, she said you guys were great and would allow me to join. I was in another thread where we both posted and there was some bad JuJu so I no longer feel comfortable posting there. I am from East TN and this is my first year with chickens. My LF cochin hatched out some barnyard mix chicks at the same time kabhyper1's hen did. We enjoyed sharing pictures of the chicks on the previous thread. So I would love to be able to join this thread and share some pics and stories with all of you if that is ok.
Thank you everyone for the warm welcomes. These pics were taken when the chicks were 4 weeks old.

Glad you found the thread, really loved seeing your pics! :) What kind of chickens are they?

Ok so hoping the thread allows me to post this picture now:
This is Diamonds new contribution. The other egg is internally pipped. You can hear it chirping inside the shell.

So cute! Very happy the pic editor is working for you, it has been a rough couple of days not being able add pics or see other pics from fellow BYC'ers!
For anyone concerned, my widdle Wibbles is looking a bit better this evening after I gave her some feed 'porridge' to work on earlier. I'm still going to give the vet a call in the morning and see if I should give her an antibiotic or anything. I made a thread over on the Ducks section of the forum and it was suggested that she might have an infection in her nose or sinuses from her nostril being clogged the other day, and I want to play it safe with my precious li'l ducky.

Hoping your duck is okay!!

You'll probably wish you hadn't mentioned that because it reminded me to tell the story of
The Cat Brothers Reunite
You'll see how Woodruff Place fits in . . .

Seriously made me teary eyed reading this. I just love cats and so happy they are reunited!! I have two boy cats that really don't like other cats except for eachother. And our chickens are the same as yours, they peck at the cats and the cats are pretty afraid of them!
