INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I bought 300# of feed today (hopefully it will last the 2 weeks but I doubt it lol) and was so excited when I checked out that layer feed was down to $10.59 and chick was $13.29 per 50# bags! About $1 less per bag. Hope it keeps going down!
This is the biggest advantage to having smaller chicken breeds. I need 2-3 times that amount to make it a full 2 weeks. I had been free ranging the larger smarter birds but the hawks are coming back. So yesterday we got most of the hens back in the covered runs. Now roosters free range but not the ones in the breeder programs.

And yes it is nice to see the lower feed prices. I'm thinking the supply of corn might be up. Not so sure the corn farmers want the price of corn to go down though.

Wow! I bought feed yesterday and it was $18 a bag, $20 for chick starter. Super jealous of those prices.

Here's a video of my silkie rooster running around all wet. He is so funny!

He and all the ladies got honey all of themselves (long story, lesson learned to not put just processed frames on top of the chicken coop!) and all had to be washed. He loves being pampered and just sits in the warm water to soak. So funny!
Lol! Especially when he shakes his head and all his 'spiked' feathers get spread out. Too bad about the honey, but an adorable result....

We have one of the state-manufactured yellow No Trespassing/Biosecurity Area signs on our main gate to the chicken yard and garden. ISPA (Indiana State Poultry Association, affiliated with Purdue) sells them for $6 or $7. I think they will deter normal people with a brain who can read. Of course, it's usually the others who can be a problem.

For a while we had "trouble" with neighborhood kids showing up at random like we had a petting zoo, but since they are our neighbors we had to be nice. And they were kids, and just curious. One of their dogs ran off with one of our Australorp hens, but since that incident 3 years ago, they have kept the dog totally confined, which my elderly neighbor next door also appreciates, since that dog is an idiot and only knows how to bark. The dog scares her to death. Fortunately, he is a bird dog and did not cause any serious injury to my hen. Just grabbed her by the neck and jumped over the fence with her! She lost a few feathers and drops of blood, but thank goodness nothing worse. We were livid, though.

I won't meet people at my house to sell anything unless it's an object too big to get in the car and drive a few miles to meet them in a public place. I have read too many horror stories about bird thefts, and much, much worse than that. It only takes one dishonest or cruel person to ruin openness for everyone else. That said, I have really enjoyed my visits to other people's farmettes and chatting with them in person. I am surprised that a few let anyone come out because of the value of their birds.

Our local friends and neighbors do enjoy visiting with our birds, and I'm happy to keep it at that.

berry very cute but .... what are they?

Glad you found the thread, really loved seeing your pics! :) What kind of chickens are they?

They are 1/2 LF Cochin but I am not sure what color my rooster is. They were eggs from my hens. The black one could be full cochin but not sure. Here is my rooster and my hens that were laying when Jewel went broody.

Blu is my rooster

Celeste, I was told she was a leghorn but she lays tan eggs so I think she is a white rock. My RSL did not start laying until after the chicks hatched.

Big Momma, I was told she was a lavender Orpington but not sure

Rarity came from the same seller as Celeste claiming she was a leghorn, I suspect white rock also. She lays the same color egg as Celeste.

So I guess you could say they are a barnyard mix :)
