Has anyone tried using the water nipples with a heated water bucket? We used the heated buckets for the alpacas & ducks this winter with no problems. I realize the bucket is rather pricey to experiment on & then not have it work, but I'm wondering if that would be a good option??You're right-- I forgot about the floating pond de-icer that we have in the main water tank. Oops-sorry! Yes, the combination of the 2 worked incredibly well.
The addition of the heat tape was key--at first I used only the tank de-icer and the PVC with the nipples in it froze and burst.
I bought non-gmo feed at Honeyville feed mill yesterday (LaGrange county -- close to Shipshewana). The 16% layer feed (ground grains -- not pellets) was $12.47/50 lb. bag and the 18% chick grower (also ground grains) was $13.17/50 lb. bag. I believe they grind their own chicken feed there. They also have organic, but I can't afford to get the quantity I use. The gal who works in the office there said a lot of the farmers who bring in grain for the non-gmo feed follow organic practices, although they haven't been certified organic for whatever reason. Are you buying organic? That is what organic (or at least non-gmo) goes for around here.
