INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

You're right-- I forgot about the floating pond de-icer that we have in the main water tank. Oops-sorry! Yes, the combination of the 2 worked incredibly well.
The addition of the heat tape was key--at first I used only the tank de-icer and the PVC with the nipples in it froze and burst.
Has anyone tried using the water nipples with a heated water bucket? We used the heated buckets for the alpacas & ducks this winter with no problems. I realize the bucket is rather pricey to experiment on & then not have it work, but I'm wondering if that would be a good option??

Are you buying organic? That is what organic (or at least non-gmo) goes for around here.
I bought non-gmo feed at Honeyville feed mill yesterday (LaGrange county -- close to Shipshewana). The 16% layer feed (ground grains -- not pellets) was $12.47/50 lb. bag and the 18% chick grower (also ground grains) was $13.17/50 lb. bag. I believe they grind their own chicken feed there. They also have organic, but I can't afford to get the quantity I use. The gal who works in the office there said a lot of the farmers who bring in grain for the non-gmo feed follow organic practices, although they haven't been certified organic for whatever reason.

As some of you all know, I just ordered my 1st batch of chicks from Ideal. I paid for 10 Pullet "Suprise Special". Well THEY CAME IN TODAY!! Woot!! Since I had to work, I had a friend pick them up from the post office for me, bring them home and told her what to do. Everything was set up for her and I explained to her about watching them, feeding and watering... and so on.... Everything went better then I expected cause when I got home not only was my 10 pullets running around, chirping, drinking, eating and sleeping, but when I looked into the brooder... there wasn't 10 there.... there was 15!!! OMG!!! I am sure I now have 5 roosters... I didn't want any and was expecting to get perhaps 1 - but 5???? YIKES... that is too many for 10 hens. But none the less, they are all healthy, cute and doing well!!

Ideal did not inform me of what they sent... so I took some photos in hopes that you all could help me in identifying what I could possibly have (if able at this age)?

I have 9 of the Yellows, 1 of the Browns & 5 of the Blacks. Can you all tell what these little guys are... and don't be silly and say Chickens.... I know that much :)

Thanks in advance :)
I been doing some looking around, I think the black ones are Barred Rocks. They all have some white on them somewhere and ALL have white on the heads

Hi everybody. :) So we switched to Nutrena feed today, and the chickens look like little kids would if their Mac and cheese was switched with Brussel sprouts... they hate it. Pellets are foreign, and the food is brown instead of Purina yellow. I mixed it with their old feed, but they only reluctantly ate it. I hope they get used to it. It is waaaaay cheaper than Flock Raiser, and I have roughly 60 chickens. Btw, have any of you fed your OEGB's pellet feed? I feel like it's too big for them. I think I got an egg from one of my little OEGB's yesterday, it was the size of a little bird egg. Adorable. Anyway, I got some pics of the 5 month old black LF cochins tonight and some updated pics of Cinder for @Rhandi74
My little guy, lol he is actually huge for 5 months. His brother now lives with @raisinemright

The girls

She was looking up at me, that' why her eye looks strange. Also The barn lights really mess my camera up.

The cockerel again. I need to name these guys. My Dh thinks they look like oil, with their green sheen.

Cinder. I think she is almost 6 weeks now. Those feets!

Hope everyone is doing well. Its been super busy here, so I havent read much of the thread, I'm glad to see that @Rhandi74 made it over to the nice side. Your chicks are looking very cute! Cole and Cinder are just hours apart so I'm excited to see them grow together.:)

Well that is 4 hours away from me. Darn!!! Well maybe once Panther starts laying, I can send eggs or chicks. Not sure how but I could figure it out.
Eggs would be great if I have any broodies when you have eggs... I really do want some if you sell any, they are beautiful and DH is not shutting up about them.... lol

They are 1/2 LF Cochin but I am not sure what color my rooster is. They were eggs from my hens. The black one could be full cochin but not sure. Here is my rooster and my hens that were laying when Jewel went broody.

Blu is my rooster

Jewel is a LF cochin the chicks momma

Celeste, I was told she was a leghorn but she lays tan eggs so I think she is a white rock. My RSL did not start laying until after the chicks hatched.

Big Momma, I was told she was a lavender Orpington but not sure

Rarity came from the same seller as Celeste claiming she was a leghorn, I suspect white rock also. She lays the same color egg as Celeste.

So I guess you could say they are a barnyard mix

They are very pretty, I didn't see any tail on the chicks is why I was asking.

Thank you, I really like him too. He is a great first rooster to have. He treats all my hens very nicely and does a great job protecting them also. He has been great with his chicks, which really surprised me. I expected him to not really care about them. When I got my first chickens and ducklings at TSC, I absolutely fell in love with my bantam cochin. I decided I had to have LF cochin and it took some time to find a pair that even resembled the breed in my area, so when I saw them on craigslist I just had to have them.

Here is Panther, the chicken that made me fall in love with Cochins. She loves to be held and to sit in laps.
Thats what made my DH fall in love with Cochins in the first place, only it was a LF black for him.

Yes, we all need to see pics of that! I am picturing it in my head and cracking up right now. Glad you are getting some Keats too! They are really cute. Mine still has blue eyes and I just don't want them to change colors!
I promise to try and not freak out next time and grab my camera. Didn't know they had blue eyes cool.

I still have this little lady available. If she doesn't find a home, she'll likely be soup soon. She doesn't have a lot of meat on those bones so it will be very sparse soup.

1 yo on labor day weekend.
1/2 Swedish Flower Hen 1/2 BA
Laying a pullet sized egg almost daily

Her papa is in the background here.
cute top knot hope she finds a home soon.
