INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hello ALL! I am new to BYC and to the chicken lifestyle. I am currently just doing my research as to what chickens we want to get (we have 2 kids), and other important tid bits, so any advice/suggestions would be appreciated. Also, I like in Dearborn Country, does anyone know of any hatcheries in this area? I am thinking about getting Wyandottes and Australops. Thank you for you all of your help!

Well I had a bad day! Fell this morning while refilling waterers and bn achy for hours! Then decided to mow my yard and didn't change my shoes. I only had flip flops on. Yep you guessed it- while mowing a small hill in my front yard (and I mean. SMALL hill...) my foot slipped off the padded foot placement and my toes went into the belt pully (which should have bn covered but my son had just worked on tightening the belt) any way a trip t the hospital later and I still have my toes but the way they are hurting I'm not sure I want them! Lol those of you who are squeamish stop now! This is after getting the bleeding stopped and going through X-rays:

Two stitches in my baby toe, two in my fourth toe, two inside my big toe and five on the outside. It had a chip in the bone but seriously could have been LOTS worse!
Moral of the story- DONT wear flip flops while mowing not even on a riding mower!

That is why I don't wear flip flops when I mow. I wear sandals if it is hot enough out to wear them

Why is Pipd up at 5 am? (And why is she referring to herself in the third person?

)

I woke up at 3 am on the couch. I remember snuggling up under the couch pillows and willfully falling asleep there, though I have no idea why. Normally, I'd doze for an hour at most, but not tonight! At 3 am, I had to get up, take my allergy med, and trundle my way up to bed. But OOOOOOH, NO, my brain has put its foot down, so to speak. 3 hours of sleep is more than enough for me, so says my brain! I say please, Brain, I have math homework to do on Friday and really should sleep more than this! But nope, Brain will have none of it!

Brain: "You fell asleep on the couch and now you must suffer! BWAHAHAHA!!!"
Me: "Why..? Oh, why..?" (Insert dramatic tear rolling down cheek.)

And that's why I am still up at 5 am.

You bet it was!

If you're wondering, that fence panel at the left of the picture I left above is about 4 feet tall, so that should tell you how much snow we had! The biggest issue for me, though, was when it all melted and seeped (read: gushed) into my coop addition. It was the spring for dredging water out of the coop with a bucket. I still need to implement my fix for that... Can't let that go too much longer!
Oh, mother would kill me if I even suggested it! I can just picture it, though! Replace the carpeting in my room with linoleum, seal off the door to prevent heat escaping, build one very, very long, very tall ramp from my window to the chicken yard... It could work.
lol.png
I can just see myself snuggling in to bed with 41 hens perched on and around me. Sure, it'd be messy by morning, but what fun it would be before then! I certainly wouldn't be cold with that many feathered heat generators on me! Just picture walking into a room with a pile of chickens in the corner, and then me emerging from its depths.

Okay, I have long since known I get a bit... shall we say, imaginative? When I don't have enough sleep. I think this post takes the cake, though.

Take my guess with a grain of salt, considering I am running on 3 hours of sleep at this point, but I would lean toward boy on your bird with that amount of redness and those wattles coming in already at 7 weeks. Either way, I would definitely give it more time before saying absolutely one way or another!

You sound like me when I don't get my 40 winks either

Just brought Adeline to the vet to have her bumblefoot bandages removed. Her foot looks great.

Yay! Adeline was also saying, "Yay!" because she was anxious to get back to her former life. This morning for the first time, she started making a racket as though she wanted me to get up and take her outside. She'd had enough of her hospital kennel. Now I get to clean up the area.

Still looks like Bonbon has one chick so far, but I don't want to mess anything up by looking. It's great that we finally got a cool break in the weather!

@bradselig @Leahs Mom Tarps and Wind Blocking Tarps I had my first visit to Harbor Freight Tools yesterday. haha It's one of those places, like RK and TSC, that I never thought I'd enter. It was fun! (Oh, how I've changed since having chickens!
tongue.png
) I noticed that they had tarps and wind blocking tarps. I mentioned a website I had recently run across that sold wind shields, but I didn't know that they could be purchased at a place like HFT. The quality looked good from what I could tell . . .
@atrueb00 Loved your photos! So is this little tiger what all guineafowl look like as chicks?? That would be so cool to have a chicken with tiger stripes.

Btw, I googled "keets," and ran across a perfect example of a Bad Website Design. (I'm referencing posts around a month ago when some of us discussed the effects of color, reversed type, animation, etc. for easy on the eyes reading). Raising Guinea Fowl & Keets - Gardening With Guineas
M2H, so funny you pointed out that website, as it places so highly in the search engines, but was clearly made in the 90s. LOL If you visit this page, I use this as a reference for the colors of keets and adults. This keet in the photo above will lose her stripes and turn into a pearl guinea-she'll be black with white polka dots all over. They lose all the fluff on their heads, grow a weird knob and their waddles make them look like clowns. I have an opaline guinea, and she has been a beauty since hatch. She's all white and has white polka dots all over if you look at the large image of the pic below.

Closest hatchery to you that I know of:
http://www.akershatcheryandeggs.com/

next closest hatchery would be Meyers in OH

now there are most likely lots of local breeders with breeder quality birds closer to you. The breed descriptions on the meyer website are a good resource for choosing a breed.

Not all breeds have mean roosters. Most times the heritage breeds have nicer roosters than the hatchery versions of the same breed.

Ok...... I am all caught up! Sorry I haven't been on here lately. I just finished cleaning the house, coops and cages. Will also be having a yard sale Sept.7-Sept.15. At the risk of sounding cheesy, everything must go!

didnt get a price on these, no one was around.

I was told 110.00 for these.

And this is where my batteries died, Probably a good thing anyway cause the next group of critters I ran across upset me anyway. They had of course puppy mill pups ( always have them ) and some actual breeders pups. but what upset me the most was the poor Alpaca, She was a young one blond in color and SSOOO skiny. I wanted to take it home!!!! Dont know anything about them but I would have tried to find it a better home, but they were asking 300.00 and would not come down. So I had to leave her.
They had Rabbits out the wazoo.
They did have some Very Nice looking Splash Cochin 15 week old Roo's I wish they were hen I would have brought them home with me. they wanted 8.00 eh for them.
O and the Black Silkies pictured , they were asking 25.00 eh or 40.00 for both.
the ducks were 3.00 for the babies and 5.00 - 15.00 for the adults.
I didn't see anyone from BYC
