INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Warning: Pic heavy post! Went to my cousin's farm in Terre Haute for Labor Day weekend and had a ton of fun as usual. Only problem was DH flipped a 4 wheeler over on himself, but he walked away with no injuries. Feeling very lucky he wasn't injured and didn't end up in the creek. Got some pics of my cousin's birds to share. Just love going over there and seeing all the variety he has. Here's a ISA Brown in the nest box, they are so friendly. I didn't know that black sex links had such cool eyes! They were all so friendly and just loved me in there with them. Here's a shot of some of his baby peacocks. One of them is very light and looks like it will be a different color from the rest he's got. Here are his guinea fowl. These guys are such oddballs! Love the curious side look they give me. Here are his adult peacocks. He's only gotten 1 egg this year (they are just about 2 years old) and wants to set up a breeding program next year. I even got to see a male put on a show for the ladies. At night, each male was perched up with a group of 2 peahens, its like they've already decided who is with whom. Aren't these 2 adorable! These are my cousins' kids and they love the farm, call all the chickens chick chicks. :) We met with @BryLT3 and she got this little keet that was just hatched. I kept her close to keep her warm on the trip and managed to get a good photo too. My mom took care of our chickens while we were away, and ended up treating them to cooked veggies every night. This coming from a woman who has lived in the city her whole life and doesn't like to cook. LOL Can't believe my mom loves our chickens! I let them out when we got home and my rooster decided to go visit the chicks for a while. Amazes me that he is so nice to them and gets along really well. They are separated all of the time, but when I opened both the coop doors they sometimes mingle. It has been so hot here our bees seem miserable. They are bunched up on the outside and probably overcrowded right now. Just added new boxes about 3 weeks ago to all the hives, can't really afford to buy new boxes to add to 7 hives. This silkie hen is broody. I picked her up and put her on the ground and she gives me this look like she is thinking, "I'm not doing anything wrong!" Here's another pic of the littles. Just love these guys @bradselig ! So far out of the original 14 that hatched, we've only lost 1. They are looking really good and starting to move past the awkward stage into full feathering. The guinea has started to yell "buck-wheat!" softly, not at all loud like a normal guinea would. Glad she is a female, I think the MF is a male. I have a feeling I did get a lot of silkie roosters, some combs are looking roo-ish and the two juveniles I bought in May are both roosters too. Going to have to figure out what to do with all of them.

Doing great! Here she is with me in the car. She's so funny and loves to peck me and chase my fingers around. She integrated smoothly in with the other day olds I had. And here is Holly, the piglet we are keeping. Just for you ;)

If anybody is interested in in piglets, please PM me! Their mom started weaning them herself a little earlier than expected (5 weeks), so they will be ready to go to their new homes in about a week. They're already on solid food and drinking water willingly. I will be taking them to the swap meet in Knox with me next weekend, and there's only 3 left- 2 females 1 male. :)

Excellent post, thanks for sharing! Goodness, thanks so much for sharing the pics! Sounds like a wonderful visit too. I am envious of the peas. I just adore them, and have tried to keep them. They are still in future plans, but the neighbor's not getting the next batch!
They are so cool. Very large birds though, need a lot of room. Glad you enjoyed the pics!
Hello ALL! I am new to BYC and to the chicken lifestyle. I am currently just doing my research as to what chickens we want to get (we have 2 kids), and other important tid bits, so any advice/suggestions would be appreciated. Also, I like in Dearborn Country, does anyone know of any hatcheries in this area? I am thinking about getting Wyandottes and Australops. Thank you for you all of your help! Lisa
:welcome Glad you found the thread! What type of chicken to get is tricky, cause it depends on if you want meat, eggs, both or just pets. No matter what you decide, plan for extra space if you have a good size yard. Chicken math is always about multiplication. LOL
I am still way behind but I wanted to share some pic's with ya. We went to Rockville and Cory Creek today even tho it looked like it was going to rain on us DH said he was tired of sitting home... soo just to give ya an ideal of what kinds of things they had today. cant see but BO's and white ducks? These were 5 week old Necked Necks. they went for .50 each and in the yellow creates are RIR's The BO's went for 2.00 eh the RIR 2.00 eh. the ducks went for 4.25eh the guy said these were BJG's I dont think so they dont look anything like mine, Black Sexlink's maybe??? Highest fan went for 5.00 Lowest was 1.00 the dog boxes 4.00 each Bee hive tray thingys.. 1.00 pr box. Lg and XL Dog crates 4.00 and 7.00 They had lots of building metrials and cages and just all kinds of stuff us " chicken people look for. They also had Rabbits Quail and a pea hen. That was at Rockville. This is Cory Creek, I was disappointed with it this weekend. It is normally allot better. didnt get a price on these, no one was around. I was told 110.00 for these. And this is where my batteries died, Probably a good thing anyway cause the next group of critters I ran across upset me anyway. They had of course puppy mill pups ( always have them ) and some actual breeders pups. but what upset me the most was the poor Alpaca, She was a young one blond in color and SSOOO skiny. I wanted to take it home!!!! Dont know anything about them but I would have tried to find it a better home, but they were asking 300.00 and would not come down. So I had to leave her. They had Rabbits out the wazoo. They did have some Very Nice looking Splash Cochin 15 week old Roo's I wish they were hen I would have brought them home with me. they wanted 8.00 eh for them. O and the Black Silkies pictured , they were asking 25.00 eh or 40.00 for both. the ducks were 3.00 for the babies and 5.00 - 15.00 for the adults. I didn't see anyone from BYC
:goodpost:Thank you so much for this! Great to see pics and prices. If those beehive frames were new, that was an amazing price! I'be heard beekeepers shouldn't buy used equipment due due to bio-security concerns.

Oh my, thank you for the pics! Just showed DH the piglet and he rolled his eyes. But the piglet is sooooo cute :D

Thank you so much everyone! I am excited to start this! We are gonna start building a coop in the next few weeks
congratulations. Building is great fun. There are lots of posters on here who have made their own coops. If you need help along the way or have design questions, please ask. @Leahs Mom coop is my favorite personal flock coop that I have seen pictures of on here. It has the egg collection inside but outside of the bird area. It has 2 bird areas so the flock can be split as needed. I know she has posted pictures before. If you are starting from scratch I would look into her plans.

racinchickins has a great setup for breeding with multiple breeds. His setup uses part of a building for the coop portion of the pens and has a set of connecting runs, 1 run for each pen. Truly a wonderful way to be able to see all of the birds in one area but keep the breeding pure.

bradselig has made use of dog houses inside his runs for his smaller chicken breeds.

Welcome! I joined BYC this summer for the same reason and it has been an amazing resource. The Indiana-BYC'ers-here people have been particularly helpful and friendly and welcoming. I'm so glad I found this community. They not only are generous about chicken advice, but are also just a caring and supportive group of people. :welcome

I finally got around to writing a guide to quarantining new birds today. :) Anyone that takes a look, please feel free to PM me any suggestions or questions about it. I plan on putting pictures up of my quarantine pen eventually, but since it isn't currently up and I have no pictures from last time, the page is unfortunately all text at the moment.
