INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

LOTS OF RAIN!!! Let's hope there's no severe weather -- or the flash flooding -- for anyone today! Good day to catch up on my canning/freezing beans, tomatoes, pickles and making rabbit summer sausage -- guess my day's pretty full and I'd better get started. Whew!

like the names... look out for "chicken math" ... lol chicken math is when 2 becomes 4 and then 8 and then 12 and so on and so on.....

I have gotten TONS of warning about this chicken math! Thank you! The breeder we went to had sexed them, so I'm hoping she was right ha ha (ALL FEMALES)

So last week I had 4 eggs in the incubator (started with 18) and we had a 24 hour power outage
somad.gif
so I figured the eggs were going to be dead. I went ahead and put them in the hatching incubator a day late just to see what would happen. I had set eggs before from these 2 bantam hens and nothing happened so I did not have much hope going into lock-down last Thursday. I actually kind of forgot about them and remembered on Saturday evening and guess what!!!!! All 4 had hatched. I couldn't believe it.

When I worry and look in the incubator and watch and wait I'm lucky to get a 50-70 % hatch rate, the one time I dismiss it I get a 100% hatch rate.

Hatching is a crazy process. I did have my other bator almost full and with the outage it stopped them all I'm pretty sure,

then my turner messed up so I decided to just toss that batch (it was all pullet eggs anyway). So the bators are down till early spring when I can totally assess where we are and where we want to go.
With all the chicks that I hatch recently and with some of my other new additions I think we are up to almost 90 chickens right now. Man did the chicken math ever get me.

I would like you guys to meet: Larry,Mo,Curley and Ruthie

This is Ruthie

The one in the front is Curley ( it is the smallest of the batch), the black one in the back is Larry and the other little brown one is MO.

Hope everyone has a great day. Gotta go study now.

I have experienced staggered hatches from both broodys and incubation! I'm always so envious of those that post their day 21 hatching and all of them on or within that day! I don't think it's that uncommon though! So awesome you've gotten such a good hatch rate though! My % success has always been so much better with a broody. .my big Marans girls are bad about smooshing them before they make it all the way out but I have only had a couple that died early on. Your first hatchling is soon to be a week old and suspect that you should be able to tell if frizzled or not by now! More pics! ! Have you candled the last egg by chance?

My 19 year old sister is having me hatch some of these cuties for her ..so I've got a handful myself under a broody. Only first week of incubation here.
The 5th one hatched this morning!!! Way to go, Bonbon. 100% hatches both times. I must have raised her right!

haha Excellent eggs from @jchny2000 (first hatch) and @ellymayRans sure helps.

#3 Monday, Sept. 8
#4 Tuesday, Sept. 9
#5 Wednesday, Sept. 10

Last time Bonbon hatched all four eggs on day 19, so this drawn-out hatching seems crazy.
I'll take photos of the oldest for you to see if it's frizzled. Last time after one week, she brought the chicks out of the coop. Not sure what will happen since the first one is 2-5 days older than the rest, but I'm sure she'll know what to do.

We're getting a big storm, much colder temps tonight (I'm guessing everyone else is, too). I'm sure the chicks will be nice and cozy under their mom's downy umbrella.

Hey love that idea for the bottoms!!! Mine are sitting on cinder blocks but the girls keep kicking pine chips into them when they scratch around in front of em. That set up would make it a lot more difficult for them t bury them all the time! And...I like that they put an automatic refilled jug up on top of them!!! Hmmmm Barb S there's another project for me t do! Lol

That's great news! Funny how only my LF have only ever gone broody! Never my bantam Cochins or Silkies! Lol. Go figure! That's the only reason I originally got them...now it's because they are so sweet and tiny! Congrats again Julie!

Anyone know of any LGD breeders around Indiana? I'm aiming to have one in the main coop and yard and one in a pen surrounding the new breeding pens.
@RedRidge has great dogs but I don't think she breeds them vary often without a buyer. Also she is in TN. Still her method of teaching the dogs how to be good LGD are great and very detailed.
I don't have the space for a large dog But if I did I would try to look for a Breeder that raised their dogs the way RedRidge does or make arrangements to drive to TN. She has the HRIR chickens too. She has posted a few posts in the natural chicken keeping thread with steps for raising a LGD. I'm impressed that not just any large dog is a LGD, it takes time and training.

If you do decide to head her way in the next year, I'm so going to ask to hire you to be a chicken train. I am craving a trio of her Rhodebar birds.

Wow, what sweet compliments. Gee... Not sure what to say.
Sally is right, I don't breed very often and have no litters planned for several years but... We just sold an entire flock of sheep who are leaving for Indiana in 10 days. So... I have 2 Maremma for sale. But... Neither one has been with poultry since they were pups. They are young themselves so they have only been with sheep so far. They are great with sheep but would need monitoring with poultry until they are more mature.
There are pics on the Red Ridge Farm Web page and fb page if anyone is interested.
Sorry I have no dogs available right now who have been with poultry.

Wow that's great!! Good job Bonbon, you should come give my girl some tips. lol
No just kidding, from everything I'm reading I'm lucky any of them hatched, guess someone forgot to tell a 6 mth old hen that pullet eggs wont hatch, well that it's not likely anyway. So considering all 8 eggs were pullet eggs, 3 hatches is awesome. DH is very disappointed tho. His fav. hen is old and not laying very much any more and 2 of the eggs under broody were hers, ( not one of the 3 hatches ) he wants me to collect her eggs again and try with another hen... I broke the last broody I had, so..... my problem is I have never seen one of the roosters with her, and after I pulled the unhatched eggs out yesterday I cracked hers open and it was not a fertel egg. Cant just buy him some more like her either... she is a BYM.
