Proud chicken mama moment~! Poppy, my little 4-month-old Legbar from Brad, has decided she wants to perch with the big girls now!
All on her own, too! The babies have been perching in the addition, which is fine by me. Not sure why Poppy decided to change venues! This is her at 3 months old--I've really got to get out there and get updated pictures of them!
Less happy miserable stuff... Oh, the rain.
My Guineas now have a lovely lake where their run used to be, with a marsh up where I usually put their feed. Their feed pan was filled nearly to the brim with water this evening because the perpetually-leaky roof on their pen leaked as it perpetually does.
Yet another thing for my winter checklist, I suppose.
The good news is the chicken yard is actually not too muddy and the chicken coop addition didn't flood!!
I actually haven't had flooding issues with the addition since I hung a tarp up as a shelter right beside it. I don't suppose this will work for snow meltoff in the spring, though. Plus I'll want sunlight to be able to get to their windows, anyway. Oh, well.
Oooh, you know what? Spring checklist--that's more fun to think about than a winter checklist!
Number 1 on my spring checklist may just be a rebuild of the Guinea pen. It at least needs work.

She's had a few scuffles with some of the other hens and has actually established her place in the pecking order! She definitely isn't high in the pecking order, but she does outrank a few of the older girls now. She also doesn't seem nearly as skitterish as she was at first, except when she feels cornered like when she's in the coop. She even lets hens walk toward and past her without issue! I guess having the littles to push around gave her enough confidence to work her way into the flock!
I'm very happy with how well this has worked out for her!
