INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Proud chicken mama moment~! Poppy, my little 4-month-old Legbar from Brad, has decided she wants to perch with the big girls now! :love All on her own, too! The babies have been perching in the addition, which is fine by me. Not sure why Poppy decided to change venues! This is her at 3 months old--I've really got to get out there and get updated pictures of them!

Less happy miserable stuff... Oh, the rain. :rant My Guineas now have a lovely lake where their run used to be, with a marsh up where I usually put their feed. Their feed pan was filled nearly to the brim with water this evening because the perpetually-leaky roof on their pen leaked as it perpetually does. Yet another thing for my winter checklist, I suppose.

The good news is the chicken yard is actually not too muddy and the chicken coop addition didn't flood!! :celebrate I actually haven't had flooding issues with the addition since I hung a tarp up as a shelter right beside it. I don't suppose this will work for snow meltoff in the spring, though. Plus I'll want sunlight to be able to get to their windows, anyway. Oh, well.

Oooh, you know what? Spring checklist--that's more fun to think about than a winter checklist! Number 1 on my spring checklist may just be a rebuild of the Guinea pen. It at least needs work.

Northeast Indiana Poultry Swap Meet

Ooooh, I'll see if I can swing this! Do you think there will still be a lot left to look at by afternoon? I may not be able to come any sooner if I do come.

Is it just me or is the thread s l o w tonight? Of course it would be slow on a night I have nothing better t do than sit n watch my bum get bigger. Lol like that really needs to happen!

 I get so excited when there are new posts here when I'm bored! Where is everyone?

(Oh, I suppose I could study to pass the time... :sick )

I think I've decided to look for kennel panels and try to clean out part of the pole barn and make winter housing in the pole barn. Still not 100 percent sure but it would sure make my winter life easier if I can get it together.

So...
I'm looking for used 10x6 kennel panels. Need a minimum of 3 gate panels (would take more gate panels if I can get them) and 7 regular 10 ft. panels to accomplish what I want to do.

So far all my kennel panels have either been given to me or purchased very inexpensively used. If anyone knows of any, let me know!

How is Miss Tilly doing as the little kids are getting older?

Actually quite well! :) She's had a few scuffles with some of the other hens and has actually established her place in the pecking order! She definitely isn't high in the pecking order, but she does outrank a few of the older girls now. She also doesn't seem nearly as skitterish as she was at first, except when she feels cornered like when she's in the coop. She even lets hens walk toward and past her without issue! I guess having the littles to push around gave her enough confidence to work her way into the flock! :yesss: I'm very happy with how well this has worked out for her!

I did want to ask, though--how in the world did you trim her crest? It's growing in pretty big and I find it charming on her, but it does seem to block a lot of her view. She just moves around so much when I hold her (grumbling all the while  ) that I'm afraid I'll poke her in the eye or something!

I can't really Anwser that as this will be the first one ever! If there is enough interest would like to do one 4 times a year

That is wonderful - and amazing at the same time :D

I had my husband hold her so I could use both hands when cutting the crest. That way I could actually restrain her head movements to some degree. My husband was also able to hold her tight against his body so that her head on one side was up against him.

I did one side first, then he turned her the other way. I also used the kind of scissors that have the safety tips - like you use for trimming a baby's fingernails.

It was very nerve wracking but I did it a little bit at a time...starting with only clipping toward the end of the feathers. Then I kept doing it shorter and shorter a little bit at a time until it got to where I wanted it.

It is slow. It has rained all day so it was and inside day and I don't have anything to do. I am so bored I am already laying down!
I have no recollection what it's like to have nothing to do and being bored -- it's been years since that has happened to me. Of course, it happens quite frequently to my son!

Don't forget to add "get lots more chicks" for your spring list!!

So this quote is perfect for me. My fabric (and thread) stash is constantly growing.....However, with the swapping out of a word or two I think we could easily adapt it for all of us! How cute would this saying be for a chicken t-shirt?!

lol! My fabric/thread/yarn stash takes up so much room we had to get a shed for it. We thought about clearing it out to create a coop, but we have no place to put the stash. And there is no way I'm giving up my stash.

oh absolutely -- there's no way I'd give up my stash either!! I love it -- a fabric shed! I hope it's connected by an enclosed tunnel from your house so you can access your stash in any weather. My DH would roll his eyes all the way to the back and to the front again if I showed him this
