INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I hope everyone and all your Fowl are ok this stormy evening!
I got another medium sized coop built to move the last batch of youngins into. .well they are about 4 months old! Lol
I've been sooo crazy busy with way too many life challenges that I hadn't gotten them moved out! Now their first night out and came the storms!!

It really came down here and Very strong winds! I'm hoping the rain dies down a bit so I can go peek to make sure Mr. Pea is still on the roof!!
I hate it but they choose to sleep on the roofs. Mrs Pea on the coop roof but Mr Pea on the house!

Good news is I was told that my newest additions may be being shipped out next week! ! I am so excited! I will be receiving 2 young White Peafowl. Of course I won't know gender for almost a year. .but nonetheless I am going to try to handle these a lot, as my pair I have were already 2 yrs and the hen 5 months or so. They are both great but I would rather hand raise in hopes to improve on their sociability. I am only now being able to get my pair to come very close to me and I can walk right by them without them running off trying to keep a comfortable distance.

oh absolutely -- there's no way I'd give up my stash either!!  I love it -- a fabric shed!  I hope it's connected by an enclosed tunnel from your house so you can access your stash in any weather.  My DH would roll his eyes all the way to the back and to the front again if I showed him this :D

my DH doesn't get to complain. My stash USED to be in the garage. Now the garage is full of old cars and car parts. It's almost as if he thinks that's what belongs in the garage...and the living room (seriously. Ever tried to find a spot on your coffee table to put down a soda and realize there's not enough room because a carburetor is in the way?).

It's late and I need to get to bed, but wanted to post chick #4 that hatched today-- I spotted it shortly after hatching. So far, Bonbon hatched one last Friday, one Sunday, one Monday (19 day mark), and one Tuesday. She has one to go. Has anyone had a broody that hatched over 5 days or more?

Bonbon did "go to the ladies' room" --lol-- yesterday in the brooder. Broody poop is the worst!
sickbyc.gif
The third chick had already hatched and the other two eggs looked stable, so I whisked Bonbon off of the nest while I quickly cleaned up the brooder mess. While I cleaned up that mess, she made another one on the deck. I noticed she had a messy back end, so I ran her inside, washed and trimmed her rear feathers, and blew dry them in record time! I returned her to the nest, and she was fine-- she lets me do anything.

They're cute little Black Bantam Cochins/possible frizzles ~ eggs from @ellymayRans

Broody poop is the worst ever! Your babies are just precious, congrats
love.gif
Bonbon did very well.
Wow that is unusual! Wait til she leaves the egg. If you get to day 26 then candle.. If the baby is going to hatch, it will likely be internally pipped. Rotted eggs are pretty nasty when they blow
sickbyc.gif
I had 3 pop this year with all the events with Dad. Went to pick them up and candle BOOM! Talk about gagging, ewwwwwww! I had got so mixed up on hatch dates I left unhatched eggs in a tray a week too long. Thats when I stopped setting any eggs for a while, oh my!
A hen normally kicks a bad egg out long before we can "smell" it.
was reading the home page this morning and for best post? i think it was, Indiana byc ers got 1st,2nd, 3rd and 10th place.

congrats. to the posters

thats pretty awesome!

ok all caught up now ( again!! ) Well decided to use the new shed coop for the layers as they have outgrown their current coop ( actually I just went nuts with the "Chicken Math" lol. and will put the EE and the Silkies in the old coop after some modifications of course.
QUESTION : do I need to do a total clean out of the old coop before I switch the Silkies and EE's into it? the EE's and the Silkies live right next to the layers, so I don't think there would be a problem??? I'm thinking as long as they all live on the same property they will be fine, its not like bringing new birds in, is it??

QUESTION #2: Got deer netting up all the way around the pen I am going to put the MF"s in ( the old Silkie pen) Again, do I need to do a total clean out first? the MF have not been around the other chickens yet.

QUESTION #3: Remember my hen Baby Girl, she couldn't walk for a long time, now she is walking again. Well she is not stable enough to go up a ramp to get in a house off the ground. Would her Igloo dog box be good enough to keep her warm this winter if I put one of those heated mats on the floor for her?

QUESTION #4: If I made a wall out of the deer netting to keep the MF's and Baby girl apart, do you see any problems I might have? Like maybe getting tangled?? I would make sure it was really tight.

Ok I'm done with the questions for now.. lol Sorry I bombed you with them, my original plans feel through so I'm trying to make new ones.
No worries, thats why I started this thread!
#1 If they are right next to each other already, I can't see a problem. If you deep litter, Its a waste to clean out unless its damp or time to do it.
#2 Thats a tough call. How long have you had them?
#3 If she is alone, she may need warmth. What breed is she?
#4 Thats hard to judge too without seeing what you are setting up. If there is nothing loose, I can't see how she would get tangled.
I am rearranging too for winter. Really need my guinea flock together! My 5 elders are socializing well with the babies... but neither want to leave their "home" they are used to. Soooo.. Adapting my guinea shed to allow the entire flock to roost, and will confine them together for a few weeks. They wont like it but its the best way to keep the flock together.

Answer #2: I have had the MF's close to 5 weeks now. I have had them in a pen up by the house. Far away from the rest of the chickens.

Answer #3: Baby Girl is a Lt. Brahma, She has a friend, a MF with a broken top beak.

Answer #4: I will get pictures when this rain stops... lol so you can see the set up.

here is a recap so you can remember what the questions were... lol

I don't know anything about guinea, but I have been told its hard to break them from something familiar. Good luck

So last week I had 4 eggs in the incubator (started with 18) and we had a 24 hour power outage
somad.gif
so I figured the eggs were going to be dead. I went ahead and put them in the hatching incubator a day late just to see what would happen. I had set eggs before from these 2 bantam hens and nothing happened so I did not have much hope going into lock-down last Thursday. I actually kind of forgot about them and remembered on Saturday evening and guess what!!!!! All 4 had hatched. I couldn't believe it.
th.gif
When I worry and look in the incubator and watch and wait I'm lucky to get a 50-70 % hatch rate, the one time I dismiss it I get a 100% hatch rate.
ya.gif
Hatching is a crazy process. I did have my other bator almost full and with the outage it stopped them all I'm pretty sure,
hit.gif
then my turner messed up so I decided to just toss that batch (it was all pullet eggs anyway). So the bators are down till early spring when I can totally assess where we are and where we want to go.
With all the chicks that I hatch recently and with some of my other new additions I think we are up to almost 90 chickens right now. Man did the chicken math ever get me.

I would like you guys to meet: Larry,Mo,Curley and Ruthie

This is Ruthie

The one in the front is Curley ( it is the smallest of the batch), the black one in the back is Larry and the other little brown one is MO.

Hope everyone has a great day. Gotta go study now.

LOL @barb s I am missing her a lot! Hope she is well.Haven't seen her post lately.

I would love to add a LGD.

Quote: Wow, what sweet compliments. Gee... Not sure what to say.
Sally is right, I don't breed very often and have no litters planned for several years but... We just sold an entire flock of sheep who are leaving for Indiana in 10 days. So... I have 2 Maremma for sale. But... Neither one has been with poultry since they were pups. They are young themselves so they have only been with sheep so far. They are great with sheep but would need monitoring with poultry until they are more mature.
There are pics on the Red Ridge Farm Web page and fb page if anyone is interested.
Sorry I have no dogs available right now who have been with poultry.
frow.gif
Welcome to our thread! If you have poultry oriented dogs in the future I know of 2 members right now looking. Maremma are the breed they mentioned to me as well as pyr's. I am looking also for a dog that's farm oriented, versatile in several breed of livestock, poultry and waterfowl. I personally just want a trustworthy breed that wont attack or eat the babies. We have a pug mix now that's an old girl, and I really would love to add an LGD to help me watch our flocks. I raise goats, and pigs once my gilts are mature... will be adding calves hopefully in a few weeks.

Proud chicken mama moment~! Poppy, my little 4-month-old Legbar from Brad, has decided she wants to perch with the big girls now!
love.gif
All on her own, too! The babies have been perching in the addition, which is fine by me. Not sure why Poppy decided to change venues! This is her at 3 months old--I've really got to get out there and get updated pictures of them!

Less happy miserable stuff... Oh, the rain.
rant.gif
My Guineas now have a lovely lake where their run used to be, with a marsh up where I usually put their feed. Their feed pan was filled nearly to the brim with water this evening because the perpetually-leaky roof on their pen leaked as it perpetually does.
roll.png
Yet another thing for my winter checklist, I suppose.

The good news is the chicken yard is actually not too muddy and the chicken coop addition didn't flood!!
celebrate.gif
I actually haven't had flooding issues with the addition since I hung a tarp up as a shelter right beside it. I don't suppose this will work for snow meltoff in the spring, though. Plus I'll want sunlight to be able to get to their windows, anyway. Oh, well.

Oooh, you know what? Spring checklist--that's more fun to think about than a winter checklist!
lol.png
Number 1 on my spring checklist may just be a rebuild of the Guinea pen. It at least needs work.

Yes! I am at the point too that Guineas need a new house.
I think I've decided to look for kennel panels and try to clean out part of the pole barn and make winter housing in the pole barn. Still not 100 percent sure but it would sure make my winter life easier if I can get it together.

So...
I'm looking for used 10x6 kennel panels. Need a minimum of 3 gate panels (would take more gate panels if I can get them) and 7 regular 10 ft. panels to accomplish what I want to do.

So far all my kennel panels have either been given to me or purchased very inexpensively used. If anyone knows of any, let me know!

@pipdzipdnreadytogo

How is Miss Tilly doing as the little kids are getting older?
I love the kennel panels, watch rural king. They have really good sales on them.

So this quote is perfect for me. My fabric (and thread) stash is constantly growing.....However, with the swapping out of a word or two I think we could easily adapt it for all of us! How cute would this saying be for a chicken t-shirt?!

yep. I have totes and trunks and a lot stuffed everywhere! I love to grab new colors and fabric types off the discount bins! Have tons of patterns too. Just need youngest DD to move her storage out of my sewing room
roll.png
Cant even walk in there right now... thanks for reminding me, winter is coming! I'll have time to sew.

I will be asking you about peas next year

Loved mine! They decided they liked my neighbor better. He is recently widowed so I let them stay. I want to hatch my own, feel that they will better adjust if hand raised.
Quote: ROFL sounds like my DH and his tunnel ram.. he still can't decide what its going on. Tired of it sitting on the microwave instead of a car! He is now saying its going on the truck that goes to the annual jamboree.

Quote: Your best bet is to keep familiar birds together, less stress. Will wait for your post.

I have no recollection what it's like to have nothing to do and being bored -- it's been years since that has happened to me.  Of course, it happens quite frequently to my son!

Don't forget to add "get lots more chicks" for your spring list!!

Well everything I has to do inside was done and I certainly wasn't going outside!
