INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Very very helpful and informative post! Now, with all that info, maybe I'm not specifically looking for an LGD. I want my poultry guarded, but the dogs will be outside of the chicken areas. There will be a large fenced buffer zone which I'be been referring to as a doggie moat... Basically a gigantic pen around the chicken pens/coop and another around the breeding pens.

I need, and am willing to spend the time working with, a dog that will not try to enter the chicken area to play with or eat the chickens. One that will not bother a chicken if it gets into the buffer zone. One that is alert to all other animals not belonging in their area.

Does this sound like a job for a good LGD or just any protective breed dog?

Well... There are too many unanswered questions to this scenario.
First of all... is the area where the poultry reside covered? Iow, is it predator proof from the air?
If so then yes, a laid back farm dog would do the trick.
If not you have a different scenario. Mostly because a tightly bonded lgd will not be happy being on the outside. They want to be with charges to protect them.
So... Another factor to consider is your predation level. If you aren't concerned about predation from the air then a deterrent may very well be all you need.
Everyone's situation is different. We are way out and have a lot of hawks and turkey vultures... And now a bald Eagle. Because I rotate with poultry netting I need something to provide ground and air coverage.
If your poultry are in a covered, confined area all the time but not necessarily totally predator proof (like those very ingenious raccoons and minks can be), then a laid back farm dog would do.

Its my last day at Lowes and was surprised with this cake! I busted up laughing. Really going to miss the coworkers. We always had a lot of fun!

I went out to put the chickens up since my lawn guy is here and heard quite the commotion from the coop. I went to check on Jewel and she had been kicked off the nest. My OEGB mix was raised in the air sitting on 13 eggs all fluffed up and screaming at any chicken that came near. :lau. I took some out of the nest and put it in the nest box next door. I then moved Twilight to the new location. Jewel went back to her nest and all was calm again. Twilight is only 5 months old, will she be ok to hatch and raise chicks this young. I have never seen her be mean to anything, it was quite surprising!!!

Here is pics of Twilight

I also found some Indian Runner hatching eggs for Jewel. :weee. I hope she hatches enough hens to give me a better hen/drake ratio. I will sell most of the drakes she hatches out.

Thank you for adding the Northeast Indiana poultry swap meet to the calendar!

Well, it's been a few weeks, and none of the other chickens has come down ill. Is it safe to find Bacon a new home yet?

Thanks for the info! Very interesting!

ETA: @jchny2000 did you find a source for calves? Mines still a bust

I'm hauling in some beef breed weaned calves next month since I won't be able to do bottle babies until after my baby comes.
We get our freezer beef from Poe's Quality Meats in Franklin. The guy's name is Keegan Poe. I'm not sure if he sells live cows or not. But if you are looking for a dairy cow, he might know who to get in contact with. I do know his cows taste great.
We are getting a ground beef half a cow this Oct and another half of a younger cow for the various steaks next May. We are also in line for the next pig processing.

BYC rules won't let me post his contact info here but I'm sure you can get a number for him from his FaceBook page: Poe Quality Meats (no link due to possibly violating the contact info rules).

Thanks Sally :) I found his page, I'm guessing they probably don't sell feeder calves but I'll keep them in mind! Curious and you don't have to share if you don't want to but what do you pay for freezer beef?
