INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

400

Not sure if you can zoom in on this pic, but we will be butchering our calf at #1300/1400 pounds. I'm thinking the age is a little off. Hopefully it will be around 14/15 months

Cool chart! Very helpful! Dairy breeds you want a little bigger because they have more bone mass than beef breeds. :) Are you planning on grain feeding?

How neat! I thought hatchery RIRs weren't supposed to go broody!

Truth be told, I'm excited. Benny's my favorite girl, and I'm thrilled there's nothing wrong with her. I'd been looking for a hen that would go broody eventually, but I didn't think I was going to get one! Broodiness and dark red plumage are signs of better bloodlines than I thought I'd get from Rural King :D

Lol I didn't think ISA Browns did either but I've got a momma with 8 chicks right now :) Which reminds me I need to get some more pics! ;)

@chick rookie thanks for the info! I also was curious what finished dairy steers were going for. I've got a couple we will be selling in a few months :)

So far it looks like we will have some old English game bantams, LF and bantam ameraucanas, various laying hens, and some pigeons at the northeast Indiana swap meet. Start registering!

been super busy last 2 days, will hopefully catch up tomorrow night. Offering my pekin duck flock up for sale or trade! PM if interested. I am keeping my muscovy and considering another breed for next year.

Has anyone been to the Sept. Show in Bloomington? I know it's smaller than others, but I have several birds to sell and didn't know if it would be worth taking them and setting up a sales spot. I'm planning to go visit anyway, just don't want to stress out birds if there aren't typically many buyers. Any info?

Matt

In my quest to make my life easier this winter and go down to two pens, I started merging my layer flock and Bielefelder flock yesterday by free ranging them together. Heiser the roo is just beside himself with happiness at the 9 new ladies and I just couldn't be happier about his demeaner and behavior. He is just such a good boy. It is fun to see them all out there together.

I heard him sound the alarm once yesterday and got over there in time to see a rabbit go streaking through the flock. He was a super good boy about keeping an eye out for "threats". He was out there picking up and bringing treats to all the girls, running around like mad trying to get them all. Then last night at bed time Heiser called his Bielie ladies back to the coop and I could see him standing in the run looking perplexed at the fact that the layer flock didn't heed his call. He couldn't figure out how to wrangle the rest of them. He finally gave up. It may take some "training" lol.

Operation barn kitty is going well. Maggie, Beth and Herschel were installed in the barn on Wednesday and all three are letting me pet them and coming running for food. Thus far I haven't seen them "earning their keep" yet but they will get a pass for a week or so before I start calling them names. I can't WAIT to start seeing them killing those tiny jerk mice!!!!

I am enjoying this nice Fall weather! I hope it sticks around a while! Hope everyone else is doing well!

Long time no see, chicken friends. Hope you're all doing well.

DH tells me today my birds will finally get to use their run. We won't have the steel roof on today, but it should be hawk-proof, which is essential after this week. There's been bird drama. Haven't lost anyone (yet), thank goodness, but the guineas have been sounding their alarm for good reason.

Nobody's started laying yet, but it should be soon. Need to finish their nest boxes, I guess.

One of my boys has asked if we can get a buff silkie, and the hubby really loves them the best, so I think we will add a couple more silkies in the spring!

Off to browse the threads, see how y'all are doing.

Haha. I have half a dozen eggs incubating right now. Once I get them going, I hope to be able to share eggs/chicks from them next year. But they still need to hatch before I get too excited! They go into lockdown tomorrow! Really getting nervous now.
Those are the all black ones, right? I would love one.

Thought I'd post this here too as some may be interested. (I also posted in the Natural Chicken Keeping thread.)

Some musings on GM/Glyphosate
You know I have posted in the past that I'm wondering if glyphosate (common name: roundup) may be a bigger issue (or at least as big) as the GM grains. In fact, I've wondered if that is the main issue rather than the GM but I'm just "wondering" based on the research I've read and common-sense deduction.

When a plant is GM, it is engineered to be able to withstand a higher level of glyphosate and other herbicides so that it can survive while the weeds are not able to withstand it. (Of course we are starting to have roundup resistant super weeds but that's a different subject.) The glyphosate is taken INTO the plant...it doesn't just reside "ON" the plant. Glyphosate has been proven to cause reproductive problems in humans and animals among other things (such as leaky gut, for example).

Anyhow...interesting article regarding glyphosate and "celiac" or "gluten sensitivity" that I thought I'd share for anyone that may be interested.

"Hi-lights" of the article:
