There was some good news in our newspaper (The Goshen News) today. On the front page there was an article about the fall winter forecast. Here is a quote from the article:

"According to Evan Bentley, a meterologist with the North Webster (Northern Indiana) office of the National Weather Service, current indicators appear to be pointing toward above average temperatures for both the fall and winter months. 'It looks like for fall, right now we're looking at better than normal chances of being above normal when it comes to temperatures,' Bentley said from his office Wednesday afternoon. 'And we're seeing the same thing for the winter time frame. If it's leaning any particular way, it's leaning toward above normal levels.'.....For this winter, it looks like we might actually be leaning toward below normal precipitation......'Right now we really aren't anticipating anything like what we had last winter. We know there are some rumors and stories out there right now about it being another bad one this winter, but that's really not supported by anything we're seeing here."

There's more to the article explaining a bit about how they go about with predictions. I'm sure hoping Evan Bentley is right!!!

I don't even wanna know here. I have 15 geese. 5 mature guinea, 57 quail. the rest I haven't tried to count yet.
My GLW will be leaving this weekend. My good friend @jsummers son wants to breed and show for 4H and he has chosen the GLW. My silkie flock will also leave next week. @chickrookie has agreed to adopt them and am very excited that she will have her hens, finally! I am taking a hard look at my breeds, species before winter gets here. Still looking at my pekin,, Silver Appleyard is a very appealing breed, and autosexing breed too. I know of a very reputable breeder in KY that keeps outstanding flocks. The pekin are a fast grower and fantastic egg producer, but I feel the need to raise heritage birds. Its a hard choice. May have to do both!

Pleeeeeease let him be right. I will send him a personal thanks and tell him I adore him

I haven't got my farmer almanac yet but keep hearing its projected to be worse.
Did I mention, I hate snow, and I hate cold more? if not, HEY I HATE SNOW AND COLD
barnie.gif

My birds don't like it much either. I am working towards breeds that are more cold hardy... except my scovies. I will do whats necessary for them to be comfortable this winter. I really dread anything below -0- because my bantams don't do well with it either. My geese ignore it and wait for the puddles in January lol!
Goodnite everyone ZZZzzzzZZZ

This is funny. I started with 8 pullets in March of this year and now I have 32.. I guess chicken math got a hold of me. :)

I love this prediction. I hope it is right, last WInter was terrible in TN, my kids were out of school for an entire month. The goats were miserable and three kidded in freezing temps. Needless to say I had goats in the house. Temps here were up and down all winter causing my goats to be miserable. I did not have chickens so this will be a whole new experience with them.

A couple of our cute kids that were born last Winter. Enjoying some of our warmer days.

I will one day have more land to allow us to have larger livestock and goats will be one of them! I'm always so envious when I folks posting about theirs! I had a Blue Pygmy goat when I was very young. My parents were very young parents and we did live in town in a very small town and he was our "dog". He grew and would butt me off of my swing set every time! Then we got a puppy and our goat kept trying to kill him so my parents got rid of him. I was too young for it to leave a bad taste in my mouth about goats. ..so one day we will have some. My goal is to raise cattle for meat and dairy goats with a few little breeds, maybe some pigs for meat too but that I'm not as familiar with so that's just a possibility.

Hello and welcome! Please feel free to post anytime. We have several thread members from different states. I should have named us "Friendly BYCer's here" instead

Good post! My FIL suggested this too, we haven't got around to getting blanks yet tho. I have a lot of large bushes fortunately. all it takes is one rooster growl and everyone is dashing to hide.
This evening, I heard my neighbor on the hill yelling COYOTE and heard several shotgun blasts! I asked DH to please stop over there and make sure his flock and my peas are ok! All this going on tells me we are in for a bad winter, wildlife is foraging hard already. Coyote worry me for sure.
Thank you for the warm welcome.

Interesting that the wildlife there are showing signs of a bad winter. The past week in central Georgia has been cooler than normal and my DH said the same thing.

That's good news that is happening before winter! It will open up more possibilities for your housing :D
