Please jump right in and have fun!

Bwahahahahahahah after more than a year on the site I just realized that I had to go someplace special to see my ovations. I thought it a bit strange that I had never received one.....and actually saw that I had more than 500 (many with comments and questions that I had never responded to!). YOU DO LOVE ME!!!!!! Ha ha ha. Anywhoo, I apologize to anyone who wondered why I never responded. Is there a way to get notifications of ovations? I'm off to explore that.

Feeling like a dummy.

I had no idea either, don't feel bad. There is a setting in your account to be notified, I finally discovered. I started doing them a long time ago cause it was there to do, and I was so grateful to see the post. I just never really watched them. Sometimes folks send a mini message, and I have missed those! My email is so jammed every day I have to pick it all apart. I know I have seen many good posts from you, and thanks so much!!!!!!!!!

That's what this is about, learning and sharing.

Tired, long day and a lot of driving! Mom to dialysis, Dad to VA, over to Anderson for blood tests, back to Daleville to pick Mom up and shopping after that

All my birds were very upset by 2:30, when we finally got back here. Talk about mass flight when I opened the gates

We have not had rain in about 2 weeks, and the pond is drying up first time this year. I have 3 big kiddie pools for my waterfowl, there was a waiting line to get in, oh my! They are not happy. Will be looking for 2 more to add bathing room. I will still be reducing my pekins and probably a few drakes from the muscovy flock. I am also considering reducing my Australorps. Too many broody girls. There are 2 hens that have set on a nest all summer, not ok. I pull them off daily just to get them to eat.

I don't really know how I set it up, but I get an email anytime someone gives me am ovation or quotes me in a post

That's funny. I just checked my profile & discovered the same thing!

I mentioned it to my DH & he said that that HE gets an email whenever I get an ovation. He then proceeded to show me on his phone. Now I really have no idea how I set that one up!

(My only guess is it's tied to a shared email, but still funny.)

So a part of our evening wind down is watching The Wheel of Fortune. I couldn't believe my ears Vana White sharing a fun (but false) fact that white hens lay white eggs, brown eggs lay brown eggs and red lay tan eggs!!! I was so disappointed in her at that moment! Lol. She said Oh but it's true I get fresh eggs from a friend! Hahaha just had to share with you all!!

This just killed my image of her, ROFL so my black maran lays a black egg

at least she tried

There's a lot of people talking about their great love for cochins. What makes them so loveable? Never had one, so I honestly don't know. The feathered legs give me pause. I imagine the leg feathers would get all torn-up & caked with mud. Does that happen & if so, how bad does it get? Do other hens try to peck at the leg feathers?

Near Fort Wayne...Hello Hoosiers
Welcome. I'm just south of ft wayne near Warren (huntington county)
@pipdzipdnreadytogo I know i have atleast 2 modern bantam cockerels available if you want to take a leap into the ugly breeds! I should have some bantam cochins in spring if not sooner.

@pipdzipdnreadytogo @Rhandi74 @ellymayRans and to all of the other Cochin lovers

. . . My DS's GF helped hold my five Bantam Black Cochin Chicks so I could try getting a few decent photos. Well, I wasn't able to get a good photo of the oldest chick or one of the middle ones. I'm hoping that ellymayRans who supplied the eggs can tell me if there are any frizzles. At this point, I'm thinking that if there is a female frizzle or if not, a female, I will keep one and find homes for the others. When will the sex be able to be determined?
Here's a reminder of their strange birth order:

Chicks hatched on
#1 Friday, Sept. 5
#2 Sunday, Sept. 7
#3 Monday, Sept. 8
#4 Tuesday, Sept. 9
#5 Wednesday, Sept. 10

This is the youngest.

A middle child who . . .

. . . decided to fly even though they say Cochins can't fly.
That's Ditzy in the background. I am so upset because she decided today to
abandon her nest of three Silkie eggs that @jchny2000 gave me!
More info at the end of my post.

Here's another middle child. She/he is sitting on my shovel.
See those dirty landscaping river rocks that I dug up? They're
my new obsession (they replaced digging up invasive plant roots).

Here's how the rocks look after I've washed them with Dawn.

Look how they come alive! I coat them with Valspar high gloss sealer -
wet look - for rocks and pavers.

So-- Yesterday after I posted my concerns about Eliza's constant yawning, she was fine. On that same post, I also mentioned that Ditzy turned out to be a great mom. She changed her mind today. After I happened to notice that she was on a second break, I put her back on her nest, but she acted like she had no recollection of seeing those eggs before! I couldn't believe it. I've felt terrible knowing that she sat on them for 13 days!!

There wasn't anything I could do because I don't have an incubator and I didn't know how long she had been off the nest. It's so sad. I guess I will buy a basic incubator in case this happens again. I googled info and found that abandoning eggs is certainly not uncommon. It's just so weird that they can suddenly flip a switch and act totally different.

Well I only have bantam Cochins but O the love of their swooshy "boots" , tiny bottoms and Huge personality! They are great foragers and reliable layers. Even though their eggs are small we love them here for breakfast sandwiches, hard boiled or adorable deviled! I have all of my bantams free range with large fowl and never have had issues. I would imagine the Large Cochin are just as wonderful but on a larger scale of course. As for dirty feet..i would say i never notice them being overly unappealing or broken. They always seem very feather duster like. They are social too. No mean roos or moody girls. Two members of my family got into chickens and had me hatch some for them because they adored mine. Ok..I KNOW I could go on and on. I'll stop now! Hahaha!

It's just so weird that they [/quote] None pictured here are frizzled. .the one flapping about I can't tell but it would be very noticeable if so. Their wing feathers would be curling outwards. Love seeing them though! I just sent my little sister home with her last one today. All 4 set at lockdown hatched. I hated seeing them leave..they are so little at first hatch..and sweet! It's been awhile since I hatched such a small number I'd forgotten how much more enjoyable that is! I'll be hatching more this spring to add more frizzles here so if it turns out you're still in the market for one I'll keep you posted. O and it will be free to you to make up for you paying too much for those eggs in the first place! Sneaky slipping it to the little boys! ! Hahaha So sorry about the eggs! I was letting my last broody hatch a single Egyptian fayoumi egg in hopes to break her brokenness and candled today and it died just within the past week! So now she's sitting on an empty nest! Sheesh! Having trouble with the quote. .it's jumping around on me and it might have put your post several times! !
