INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Ok here's one my spot for my coop is shady in the winter. Do you people think that will be a problem?

Nope...there are sunny days in winter too! Lol, the item/ items making the shade are strong/secure aren't they? You wouldn't want a tree limb breaking and landing on your coop after all your hard work building it.
Oh and Welcome!!! We are all family here, so welcome Bro. Lol

thanks I think I'm going to like it here

We got chicks last year too as the deals were "too" good to pass up. I'll repeat my recommendation to wait for chicks. BUT:
If one is going to order chicks in winter, it really is a bit easier to get them about 4 weeks before one thinks warm dry weather will be here. Wet warm weather is just as bad for chicks as ice storms. A wet chick imo has trouble staying warm.
Now I suppose if one owns a heated barn or a barn with a heated room now would be a great time to get chicks as eggs would start rolling in long before spring and of course long before spring chicks start laying

All that said, I'm hoping to participate in the New Years hatch along with something. That will give me some chicks to keep warm for a while.
I made the chicken coop out of an old shed I had in the backyard and it's going to be heated for them. Granted, its not going to be as warm as my house cause I am still going to allow them outside too and I don't want them to be having to deal with a huge temp difference, but it will stay semi warmer than outside. I even have a digital reader out there that I can read from the house..
@LKShepherd Wow, you sure did get lucky! You've gotten all of my luck, LOL! Seriously, good for you. We have purchased from Ideal Poultry before and were really happy with our chicks. We bought ten and opted out of the "extras" buy paying for insurance, and they also put a block of pressed straw to help take up the space those five chicks extra would have. I don't know if they still do that or not, but something for others to ask about if they decide (against my recommendation) to get a last-minute order.
I think so :) I am happy with the clan I got!

Phew, been busy! I had two tests and a quiz over the past few days (and not much time to study with Saturday's show and the new ducks!), but now that's over with I think I can relax! Catch up time! :D

I was about to comment on that as well! Made me laugh out loud! :D
I don't recommend the use of DE at all. For many reasons. There was an excellent article in Backyard Poultry magazine cautioning the use of DE but you can't read it on their site unless you're a subscriber or I would have linked it here. That article probably said best what my viewpoint on it is. Inhalation by the birds is one issue. It can cause lung damage very quickly. Another is changing the natural makeup of the soil or deep litter which also can hurt the "beneficial" items in the litter or soil and making a place more hospitable to "bad" items to proliferate. Soil - and deep litter if done correctly - allows for beneficial microbs and other beneficial soil constituents to balance out the bad and be in control of the situation. Addition of DE can change that balance and cause a world of trouble. Here is only one reference that says a little. I wish I could get access to the Backyard Poultry article as it is a really good overview, clearly written. http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2012/05/diatomaceous-earth-de-benefitrisk.html ETA: As always, this is just my opinion. Based on sound reasoning and information, I hope. But take it as opinion and research and draw your own conclusions.
What are your thoughts on using DE for pest control? I've never used it on my birds themselves, but it really put a stop to the feed mite issues I was having, and I used it to get rid of some ants that were crawling up the frame of the coop door over the summer, so obviously it was used around the birds. It really seems to work for this purpose, though--no problems with either since!

Thanks to @ellymayRans @kabhyper1 @pipdzipdnreadytogo for suggesting that my three Bantam Black Cochin chicks are girls! I took a few more photos this evening and another video that also shows some of my big hens. @kittydoc might like to see the Imported English Orps . . . btw, your Jubilee cockerel is quite a catch and is a great price! (No, I'm not interested in breeding -lol). And @ellymayRans -- I'd love to see pics of your sister's little frizzle Cochin chick. Here's the youngest of the three. Born on Monday, Sept. 8
Is this one's comb as pinkish as it looks in this picture? Or is that just my computer? Also, is one of them really tiny compared to the other two, or was it the angle with the camera in the video?

We're in a woods, so my coop is mostly shaded for the majority of the year. It gets more sun in the winter and less in the summer. That's one of the reasons I chose to build on to the south side and add a lot of windows--lots of wintertime sun! Anyway, my point is, it works well either way, as long as the birds have shelter. Chickens do much worse in heat than in cold, so having that shade in the summertime will be an added bonus for your birds. :)
It has been about 4 weeks since getting our new additions! Saturday was such a pretty day I let them outside for the first time. It wasn't long before they were off honking and found my Peahen. It was so funny to watch her run from them but in just a few days she's allowing them to stay with her. Took some pics this morning!

Beautiful! :love I really think Peafowl are next on my list of species to try raising.
I am sorry for your loss. Yes, it had helped a lot, I got the one inch netting thats considered fish netting off eBay.. Now that I have adult geese and turkeys running around, its not an issue usually. We have had a small hawk breed take dives at my OEGBs only to be attacked by the guineas.
Had to go back quite a ways to find this, but I've been thinking about it since I saw it. Do you happen to have a link to the netting you're talking about, or a name / phrase to search to find it? This sounds like the stuff I want to put over my duck yard. I was just going to give up on it and use bird netting, but I'd like something more durable if it isn't too costly!

We finally got Trudi to swim!! :celebrate Tonight, when I went down to get them in for the night, she and Malcolm were both in the pool, like they had gone to water for safety. They are so adorable! Since I began bribing them for their affection with treats, they keep coming over and standing a few feet away from me, eying me so expectantly. They really love their grains! I'm just relieved that they seem to be taming down pretty well. They don't like me coming to them, but will come to me at least! And they're super cute when they get to eating or swimming or blowing bubbles in the water! :love

Bad cell phone picture, but here they are as of yesterday. I like how they cleaned up after their trip home. And they're so small! :love
