INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Just wanted to take a minute to say hi all! I've been following but between my phone being stupid and now a new baby to cuddle I haven't been/won't be posting much for a bit. I hope everyone is close to set for winter. The forecast looks COLD next week! I still have a few to many birds but other than that I think DH has got things set up for the cold weather coming.
Congratulations on your baby. I almost asked about you a few times. Then I would remember all of the times I would get asked in those final 4 weeks.

Quote: Well thought out. You seem to have plenty of space too.

I have enjoyed reading/seeing the posts here even though I'm in Kentucky! Lots of good advice and tips. Now I need some help though. I'm looking for chicks to buy. Preferably arucaunas, cream legbars, or easter eggers. We live very close to Corydon and don't mind a drive to pick up. Like keeping business local

We dont care how close or far away you are. We welcome anyone that wants to share stories, have fun and just be part of our group. We aren't just about chickens either. Many of us keep other birds and livestock.

blessed event for you and your family.

Molting ?s

About how long does molting take? My Easter Egger laid her last egg on Sept 12th. She went almost completely bald but looks fantastic now. Her comb is still pink - not red. Will she start up again soon or is there more going on besides the feathers? My hens started laying end of Feb. and we quickly got used to having a constant supply of eggs. The others started their molt later. Only one hen is laying, but she looks ready to start molt. Will this likely be the end of the eggs until Feb? Do the winter breeds require supplemental light to make eggs or do they just make fewer eggs?
Molting is a month or so, be sure to offer extra protein for those sooo embarrassed and cranky!!!
If you dont use artificial lighting she may not lay til spring. I don't, It will reduce their lifespan. I want my girls here a lot longer.

Meaties need to eat a couple times a day. treat them like a normal chicken if you want happiness in them (and better gain) Best advice is with hold feed 12 hours a day, per all the hatcheries. I fed them and treated them like all my other birds. Raised them with heritage birds, let them free range. If you follow the "recommended" feed schedules you will have heart attacks (flip) and leg failures. I do still raise them, but more humanely than they tell you to do it. Let them be chickens but feed them a lil more often.
hi I'm just getting back into this after 35 years of no birds very excited starting my chicken coop tomorrow I live in Elizabeth Indiana

I was away from everything farm and chicken about 28 years myself.
Dad still had geese but I lived in town several years.

I'm all about letting chickens be chickens. Just so I'm clear, will giving them as much FF as they can eat, twice a day, be adequate? Should I leave a dry feeder out free-choice as well?

hi I'm just getting back into this after 35 years of no birds very excited starting my chicken coop tomorrow I live in Elizabeth Indiana

That's a long hiatus! ! I don't think I could do that! Hahaha
Welcome back!! I hope this crazy weather holds off for your building adventure! I hate working outside when the temps are below 40! Makes my hands hurt...yuk.. Post plenty of pics on your journey if you can. We love pics!

Do you have chickens yet? Are you hatching, buying chicks, grown? What breeds? How many and how big is your coop plans?

I have 3 coops. Each housing different age groups. The largest houses the oldest flock. They range from ooo 4 years to a year old. It is 9'x9' by 8' tall.
The second. .the original. .houses a March hatch, it's only 3'x4'. Then the last houses the April hatch. .it's approx 4'x4'.
All of mine free range. I have roughly 14 different chicken breeds. Totalling mmm approx 70+. I also have 4 Peafowl, 2 India Blue and 2 White.

Questions...ask away...usually there's a member with an answer.
I'm sure @Mother2Hens will get our members list posted for all our new additions to visit! If not soon I'll go search for it.
