INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

2nd vote for the super glue. Adding the clear nail polish may work as well but both sting so the roo should be wrapped and controlled for your safety.
I agree with the heat thing. I'm adding in he will need good food to replace the blood loss ~ high protein some iron too maybe electrolytes and vitamin C to help fight off any infection. Whatever made the cuts most likely was not sterile. I would also put sugar or honey in the water to perk him up.

Editing to add that flour or cornstarch can help the blood clot to make a scab.

Check the christmas lighting sections at the stores too. All sorts of timers available this time of year.

Hi, I have been haunting craigslist looking for hens that lay blue eggs with no luck. The few ads I have found have been sold by the time I inquire, or they are all "americaunas" that lay bluish green eggs. I've also tried Hoosier Topics. Then I got to thinking that maybe someone from Indiana on BYC might be able to point me where else to look. I don't have 20 posts yet, so I can't use the Buy Sell Trade area.

I have heard there is an auction every Thursday up in Strawtown, but I can't imagine there would be special or hard to find chickens there.

I kind of hesitate to put my own "chickens wanted" ad up on CL. Those tend to draw out the scammers, but I guess it might come to that if I don't have any luck through just searching.

So, am I putting this question in the right place? Is there a better area of BYC where I should have put it?

Thanks for any advice.

yes, this is a great place to start! Lots of birds are slowing down laying, but you may have some luck finding some here. Another breed to consider is the cream legbar. They do lay blue eggs also, and are a very friendly breed.

So there I was, hosting this party. And the house was full of people, the stereo's playing, and the lights were down, and everyone was talking in little pockets of conversation, and generally having a good time. And I wanted to change up the mood so I go back by the stereo and start looking for my Dire Straights albums, but I can't find them. And I go through all of my records two or three times, and while I'm doing this, the party's winding down and my friends are going home. One of them, Alice, tries to get me to just put on anything and come back to hang out, but I'm a little obsessed with finding this lost record. After a while longer, I finally give up and put on Night at the Opera. So then I go back through the house to try to find Alice, but she's not around. I ask everyone who's left, but no one knows where she went. I know she wouldn't leave, so I keep looking, and I think that shes worse than that stupid record I couldn't' find. So eventually I wander out back, and there she is, sitting on the ground, looking down at her hands and slowly shaking her head. "Too late," she says softly to herself, too late, too late.." and she's repeating it into her hands and then I realize that she's sinking into the ground. I try to reach out to her, to pull her up, but I can't because she's actually melting into the earth. But I'm not shocked, I'm just standing there watching her become one with the dirt, and thinking "Well, there goes Alice."

Then I woke up.
Wow!

My news!

I think my fourth hen started laying!

Last night hubby missed an egg in the coop, so I knew there would be one there today when I went out. I didn't have time to collect it bc I was on the go, but when I came back later today, I had five eggs instead of the expected max four! One of them had a few bloody streaks on it. Is that normal for a first egg?

My other news!

I ordered chicks today. Probably will have too many, but after losing one and rehoming another last year, I don't have enough eggs! That shouldn't be a prob this time next year! Worst case scenario, I'll have a Marans and an Olive Egger to rehome.

I'd thought I would just pass on the OEs, but I think I am obsessed with a colorful egg basket. Hoping my coop won't be too crowded!

Congrats on the new layer! Thats very common when they start to lay, if it continues tho I would be concerned. LOL my obsession is the color in the eggs too, last spring, I realized I didn't have any white layers

Soooo I added leghorns. As long as you don't notice a lot of bickering, or actual fight 1 bird over probably won't harm anything.

HELP!!! Well ok things aren't THAT bad but I have a problem.
Went outside a couple hours ago to close the coops and bed down the ducks. Found Earl
(my white Silkie Roo just over a year old I believe) laying on the ground beside my car covered in blood literally from head to toe. These pictures were just taken, he has had two baths to TRY to get all the blood off of him so I can check for hidden injuries.

Ok so here's the problem, he has several gashes that look fairly deep. Can you give chickens stitches? Are they necessary? His head is gashed, above his right wing, on his left thigh and on his chest. What could have done this and left him lay? Is it possible for a rival rooster of the same breed to do this kind of damage?
He seems to be holding his own but he's very weak, like he's just fought a huge battle! Anything I can do for him other than what I've already done (clean him up, warm him up, Neosporine w/o pain relief on his wounds, baby aspirin in water for pain, and some vitamin water to help boost him a little).
I am terribly sorry to hear. Honestly, I suspect a cat. If he stopped fighting, the cat would have got bored and left (unless it was hungry) Most wild life would have took him. If it were another roo, that fella would have blood on him too.
Good luck to him, hope he recovers.

I am going to the Dixie Classic!!! This is the farthest away show I have ever been to and i am pretty excited about it
Wow, that sound exciting, congrats!

I've had that a few times with my little Frizzled Cochin boy. I just cleaned him up a bit. Kept him in the tub (no water of course) gave him water with vitamins and let him rest/recoupe just til he perked back up. Keeping him separate for too long will just encourage the fighting if it was another roo that did the damage. I have had a girl completely scalped by a roo once and I've never had to use any actual meds on the wounds. Just keep an eye on it.

Hope he feels better soon!

. And if you need to rant

or just blow off steam about a bad day that's ok too. We keep a member list, and who breeds chickens and other poultry/waterfowl and livestock. PM @bradselig @Mother2Hens or me, @jchny2000 if you would like to be added to the list. You do not have to live in Indiana to be a part of our group either, we have members from a few other states as well.

Going to try to get some pictures tomorrow myself, some of the birds are done molting/growing up and are just beautiful. @kabhyper1 my lil Cricket and Gus Jr are just gorgeous, and that lil cochin mix is bigger every time I see him. Gus avoids me, but Jules is usually close by lol. She is still molting, but a pretty girl and very dominant in the flock.
My piglets are becoming pigs, loving my fat lil boar! just a doll, hope he stays this social. Still haven't named him, he is big, chubby, friendly, loves big belly rubs and back rubs, solid black with one white foot. Our barrow is of course, named Bacon. Haven't named the gilts yet either, but the bluebutt is probably going to be named Tiny. She is still the smallest, calmest lil girl ever.
My York gilt is still a timid girl, but almost as big as as the boars. very long body on her. Giving her extra treats like quail eggs and an occasional stale doughnut.
Will be putting my buck, Bocephus in with his girls December 1st to have kidding late April. Really adore the baby goats

I plan to keep a doe this year and expand the herd.
Posting again about the little potbellied pig DD has. She is working way too many hours, and lil Marla is too sweet to just be a pig in a pen, she needs a good home. PM me if interested. Marla has not been spayed, she is about 10 months old, estimated weight is around 40 pounds, white with blue patches. DD is not asking anything for her, just wants to find a good home and an owner that has time for her.

Well Earl must b feeling a little better. He's not walking nor moving around the crate hardly at all but at 5:17 this morning I was rudely awakened by the weakest gurgling crow I've ever heard! He still lets out a weak bellow ever once in a while, but is so quiet it's nearly nonexistent. He at least is showing some effort. Spoiled boy got oatmeal with scrambled egg and scratch grains added to it for breakfast. He nibbled a little but wasn't too enthused about food. Found another deep scratch on his back poor guy.
Well that's the morning update, hope you all stay warm n cozy today. Enjoy your day!

ETA: wasn't another rooster that did this, there's a new cat in the neighborhood! The ducks are vigilant protectors they've attacked it twice already today. I know was a cat that got Earl because I found fang punctures in the poor guys leg a little while ago. I hope his leg isn't broken. Searching for a vet that will see him.
