INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I just don't get it. It has been about a month and all I get is one egg a day. Last winter we went down to about 6-8 eggs a day but one a day just is not cutting it. Hard to believe we used to get a dozen a day. The sad part is that it is the same chicken laying the one lonely egg every day. I know this bc we only have one silkie who is also the one white layer. So, everyday I get a little white egg. She is definitely a trooper.

Quote I have a friend who got just one. I should ask her who she got it from. I know she doesn't buy chicks online, so it had to have been someone in Southern IN or Kentucky.
There is an Appenzeller ad on CL from S. Indiana (from October) for three roos. That's how I discovered I wanted one- they are so pretty! I was sorely, sorely tempted to get a roo, but I know I really cant have one. Maybe your friend got one of these roos. I did send an inquiry to that ad asking where they got theirs from. Maybe I will hear back.

There is a member on here @pbirdhaven I believe, that raises Appenzellers. You could try sending her a pm.
Thank you, I will do that.

I hope the bleeding rooster that was posted last night is doing better.

Quote: And to complicate matters, even for the same hen the color can vary throughout the laying cycle. I have one hen that starts out very blue/green, and then the more she lays the more the green goes away until the egg is pale blue. Then she takes a couple days off and the blue/green eggs are back......

Are they the same hens from last winter? Pullets tend to lay more reliably their first winter, especially if they came into lay just before winter started. Second and later year hens are more likely to take a break. I know my new pullets are carrying the load because my average egg size has dropped with the drop in the total numbers of eggs. Another funny thing is that last year getting 8-10 eggs in one day would have thrilled me. Now that's less than half of my summer average. The ladies I sell my eggs to are going to not be so happy this winter. I'm glad I warned them this would happen.

The chickens hatched last summer July 2013, started laying end Feb/early March 2014. Very productive until Sept/Oct.... then MOLT. If no light is added, do you think these will likely take a break? Are they still considered "young" b/c they haven't been laying for a year?

Are Cream Crested Legbars & EEs more sensitive to the daylight change? Some of the spring pullets may have given an egg in Sept. then stopped.

My neighbors & students buy our extra eggs. Since we're only getting about 1 per day, there are no extras.

Winter home photos....they moved in Tuesday and are finally getting used to things.

Kale and Cilantro for Emma, The Bar Girl, and the Mamma (Red). Emma will be 2 yo on New Year's day; the other 2 will be 3 yo in March 2015.

Black Bandie (1 yo last September) and the Bar Girl again. Bar girl is still in the middle of molt and Black Bandie hasn't started molting yet so she has feathers but they're kind of scruffy.
