INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Its southeast of Richmond. Love the town, wonderful people! I am a lil partial since our camp ground is just south of Connersville. We aren't going to make it either, super busy weekend. Have plans to see some of our members and pick up a few birds lol

Earle is doing so well!!! I took Diamonds 1st and 2nd hatch of chicks out of her coop and put Earle back in with her alone. The chicks were 16 wks and 9 weeks old and they get along great so they have a little backyard type coop all to themselves. I put plastic up around it and straw to help insulate a bit. The chicks have been separated for five days and seem to be doing quite well. Ok back to Earle... I did use the super glue to close his wounds and kept Neosporine on them as much as he would tolerate it. The aspirin/electrolite water worked wonders. He is still on the endangered list but he really needed to get out of that small "hospital" carrier. He was a sitting duck (so t speak) for any other cat wanting to terrorize him again. I'm still putting electrolytes in the water, figure it won't hurt Diamond either (she is diligently brooding again- not my choice!!!) she doesn't seem t b getting up n eating much not even with the feed with in a neck stretch of the nest.
Our weather is taking a turn for the worst here today, the Polar Vortex FINALLY reached us full force! Will b down to 16 tonight with highs in low 20s tomorrow...BRRRRRRR!!! Hope you all are staying warm! Ttyl

This is going to be my answer for a couple of the coops. TSC had them for $16 the other day, going to get some and get this done.

Now that it is frigid.. I'm thinking of what I can plant around my chicken run next spring. I am considering planting Nasturtium..this variety called Alaska has variegated foilage and it blooms profusely throughout the summer. I figure it will pretty up the perimeter of the run as well as attract a bunch of yummy bugs for my chickens. Here is an example of it
is
ETA I just love the color! Is the plant safe for chickens? for some reason it didn't post my comment the first time.

I went out a little while ago n closed up the coops. Lo n behold we have a new little chick too, and there'll be another by morning (it's pipped and zipping) Earle is always a very attentive Daddy. (Lol I don't think he's realized these are NOT his babies... Shhhh). I hope they survive this cold!!!
Aww thats too precious! Bet it makes Earl stronger being a dutiful daddy.

yes, the freezing weather is here too. It has stolen my voice. I sound so funny now. It happened for a bit last year too. I'm hoping my voice is back by Friday but Sunday at the latest.
Warm tea with honey and lemon, and don't talk! I am laughing with you

kinda hard to do with your little ones running around. Seriously, hope it passes fast and you feel better.

I took the time to find a program on the internet that can talk for me to the children. The children think it is all a big game, mom is playing with them.

Well today was a first. The fermented feed was freezing in the dishes before they ate it all. Especially the goose coop! they wanted the corn out of it, was ignoring the mash. I took the food dishes in, and brought them out an hour later. I drained some of the fermented whole corn, and the geese and ducks were gobbling it up. It was like nature is telling them they needed the extra carbs! I had to take in a leghorn rooster, acting lethargic and was huddled in a corner. I put him in my bantam pen in a cage, its a warmer building. The rest of the flock appears to be handling it well. No frostbite so far. My modern games are in my unheated porch, it probably gets some heat from our pantry area and the big chest freezers. So far, they seem to be just fine! Johnny my splash roo is quite the crowing fella lately, and I noticed today Frankie, my black hen, is making a nest in the corner of their cage!!!!

I am hoping she may start to lay. They are so much like my OE's, just so tall and tiny. Sweet, friendly lil birds. I won't start the incubator til spring, but would really enjoy a few chicks

I admit it, having major chick withdrawal!!!
