INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Since we've been talking about heating waterers can anyone give me any suggestions? I was going to carry water again this year but that's just not going to work out.

There's a pic of my water in Post 18501. Basically it's a 5 gallon paint bucket with the lid on and a small hole drilled in the side set in a shallow rubber feed pan. I was going to use an aquarium heater but I can't figure out how to get it in there without loosing the vacuum. Any ideas? I also have some heat tape available but I'm afraid the birds will peck at it and I'm not sure if just wrapping the bucket will keep the base thawed?

dog water bowls here. We have multiple 1 gallon bowls but there are other larger ones out there. Another option would be a long short stock tank with a bucket heater in it. None of these options are extremely cheap.

I was thinking about doing what hoosiercheetah posted. I have a couple of the red bottom 1 gal waterers sitting around. But that requires taking to many children out in this weather to get something ;)

@browncow15

Take a look at this post for several ideas: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/730582/indiana-bycers-here/35530#post_14355718

All of those either have - or are - worked/working for me.

So far the horizontal nipples on the bucket have been staying thawed with the stock tank heater...this is experimental for several of us this year. There's a link to a thread about them in that post.

which heater are you using in the bucket? the stock tank heater we just bought for the goat water is too large for a bucket.

I was going to use a bird bath deicer - they seemed a bit cheaper than the stock tank heaters, smaller and used less electricity. Then I got lazy and decided to just use the heated horse buckets again. Like Brad I've never had a problem with the open water and frostbite. I figure it is as close to natural as they would get and I worried that the nipples on my regular waterer would freeze without me noticing! No matter what you choose there is always SOMETHING to worry about and they will find a way to damage themselves on/in it! I guess that is why they call them bird brained!
