INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

It's here! Got the yarn today. It's so soft! So if anyone is interested I have several skeins of 100% alpaca in DK and Worsted. I also have some core spun bumps. Alpaca core. The Dk and worsted I am selling at $8/oz. Almost all is Superfine. Dk and Worsted are in 175 and 200 yd skeins. The rug bumps are different lengths. I am selling it at $6/oz . Since I am selling based on weight, it's easier to tell me what color and weight you want. I have Chocolate brown, Dark fawn, Medium fawn, and lots of dyeable white available. Although there is a gray in the picture, it is spoken for. Let me know!
Beautiful colors

Kittydoc, I went to a swap and there was a man with tons of buff polish and over half of them were walking on nubs ! I couldnt believe what i was seeing. I couldnt understand how they could even walk . I did ask the man what happened to them and he just shrugged his shoulders. they were pitiful.

Thats horribly sad.

Hey, all, thought I would check in again. I've been pretty sick lately with whatever my niece brought home from kindergarten, ended up with an ear infection and a ruptured eardrum over the weekend but I think I'm recovering otherwise.

I have close to 20 pages to read, which I may or may not at this point... Sorry if I missed anything!

Mainly, I wanted to stop in and post pictures of the babies, who are 6 months old today.

They are taking the weather like champs--not even slowing down! Well, except the diva of the group, Poppy.

And the slightly older two girls from Brad.

Here is pretty Poppy the Cream Legbar. She is the only one completely opposed to the weather--everyone else is running around outside, but Poppy would rather sit inside. She also would not pose for anything, so here's what I got:

And Violet the Bielefelder, whose face, I think, sums up my feelings about the recent weather.

And just because, here's Mabel, Louise, and Georgie in the snow. These three seem inseparable sometimes!

In other news, I have been keeping a close eye on my oldest hen, 9 1/2 year old Cubby, who I fear may be on her way out.

She has been struggling with the cold since we hit about 60 F and lower, which is definitely not a normal temperature to be struggling at for an adult chicken. She was having balance issues yesterday and was blue in the comb, so I went ahead and brought her in. Looks like I have a house chicken for the winter.

She seems okay now, although she has lost a lot of weight since the summer and appears to have a lot of arthritis in her poor old feet. However, the first thing she did when I left the room was try to fly back outside through the closed window, so...

Not sure what to think on her condition at this point, so I'm just making sure she is comfortable and has plenty of food and water. Here she is complaining about her new digs:

I think that's about it from my neck of the woods. Hope that wasn't too many pictures!

...Anyone else looking forward to the warmup forecasted for the weekend?

special wishes going out to your lil Cubby. I would have brought her in too.

Have any of you bought the horizontal nipple waterers local or do they have to be ordered online? I'm planning to try them this winter and didnt know if there was anyplace other than ebay that had them.

I use the verticle nipple waterers in the summer, mounted into 5 gal buckets. The chickens took to them no problem and I love how little mess there is but they're really a pain to refill. Since the nipples are on the bottom of the bucket you can't set it on a flat surface. I had to prop it up on some landscape blocks which always seemed to be a pain. Last winter I used a 3 gal, white and red, heated waterer from RK. It worked ok, but I still refilled daily. I'm hoping that I can stretch that out to every 3 days with 2 five gal waterers.

I'm a little late getting started but now im working on this winter's watering plans. The laying flock of 25 or so birds will be trying these new waterers mounted into 5 gal buckets. I'm going to put a small aquarium heater in the bottom of each to keep from freezing. I will try to take and post some pics as I go but I need to find the waterers somewhere first or order them online.

Who has tried the aquarium heaters before? If so, do they work ok or do they overheat the water ? I read that some of them are automatically set to keep the water something like 78 degrees. I'm looking for an adjustable model. I don't think they need the water that warm, I'd just like to keep it above freezing, not "hot-tub" warm. Or I could try to teach them how to make hot tea with the warm water!

There is only one distributor in the US for the horizontal nipples so you have to purchase from him.

Also - there are different aquarium heaters out there on the market. I know one person who used a different kind than the one I have and it broke down on the 2nd night and quit working.

My only experience with them is the glass aquean 50 watt and I only used it for one season. It did fine but who knows if another one will? It's not too hot for the bucket but you DO have to keep it totally submerged.

I ordered them from eBay (from allboutchickens) on Sun night & had them by Wed. I didn't expect them to arrive so quickly. Because we'll be visiting relatives, I wasn't planning on changing anything 'til we get back. My vertical nipples work OK until it gets down to single digits, but I do get an ice slick below. (Only leaks when being used.) My hope is that the new horiz nipples will reduce the droplets as well as have a better cold tolerance. I can let you know in a couple weeks how well it works.

What's the status on your horz nipple waterer? Did it ever freeze or stick?

So far working beautifully with no hitch.

Edited to state that is with the heater in the bucket. Currently have the bird bath heater I referenced above in there.
