I waiting for you to tell us come march that you loved these all winter long. I want to try them but after buying the dog water bowls for this season I also don't want to spend the money. Buckets I have, lids too. But I think it would need to be a gradual conversion too just to make sure my chickens would use them.
My chickens are water hogs, I'm taking out water 3 times a day to keep the bowls filled and DH fills the water each morning. The duck pool has been reduced to whatever snow melts and refreezes at this point since they have a deep heated dish.

I ordered some on Amazon this morning and already got notification that they shipped! Hopefully these will do the trick for us as well :)

In other news I lost my rooster last night :( DH went out to take care of the animals and found him dead under the roosts. Unfortunately he then chucked him in the neighbors brush for something to eat him so I have no idea why he died either. :(

I agree w/your plan. It hasn't been long enough to "proof" these things. They are pretty cheap to try, but I wasn't even going to tell anyone I was trying them until the end of the season and had a full season to evaluate.

So...I keep stating in my posts that I am EXPERIMENTING and the jury is still out.

It does take some time for them to learn where the water is and how they work. In the summer I just put out pans that they can both stand in to cool of and drink from..then usually just one normal waterer of some sort, so I will like likely not use any conventional waterer in summer for the most part. So it takes some "learning" on their part.

Pretty, but can you actually grow plant near your coop?  Don't your chickens just eat it?
In my situation the chickens will be contained so I am trying to attract insects to the area. I thought about marigolds too. There has got to be a suitable plant to do that. That's the plan at least.

I've had Marigolds around my coops since it was built. The chickens love them!!! To the point they will eat em down to the roots of you let em! Lol

Hey, all, thought I would check in again. I've been pretty sick lately with whatever my niece brought home from kindergarten, ended up with an ear infection and a ruptured eardrum over the weekend but I think I'm recovering otherwise. :th I have close to 20 pages to read, which I may or may not at this point... Sorry if I missed anything!

Mainly, I wanted to stop in and post pictures of the babies, who are 6 months old today. :) They are taking the weather like champs--not even slowing down! Well, except the diva of the group, Poppy.

Here is pretty Poppy the Cream Legbar. She is the only one completely opposed to the weather--everyone else is running around outside, but Poppy would rather sit inside. She also would not pose for anything, so here's what I got:

And just because, here's Mabel, Louise, and Georgie in the snow. These three seem inseparable sometimes!

In other news, I have been keeping a close eye on my oldest hen, 9 1/2 year old Cubby, who I fear may be on her way out. :/ She has been struggling with the cold since we hit about 60 F and lower, which is definitely not a normal temperature to be struggling at for an adult chicken. She was having balance issues yesterday and was blue in the comb, so I went ahead and brought her in. Looks like I have a house chicken for the winter.

She seems okay now, although she has lost a lot of weight since the summer and appears to have a lot of arthritis in her poor old feet. However, the first thing she did when I left the room was try to fly back outside through the closed window, so... Not sure what to think on her condition at this point, so I'm just making sure she is comfortable and has plenty of food and water. Here she is complaining about her new digs:

I think that's about it from my neck of the woods. Hope that wasn't too many pictures! :)

...Anyone else looking forward to the warmup forecasted for the weekend? :fl
