INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Still not a sign that the 31 wk old pullets are EVER going to lay around here.

Don't feel bad. With the short days, I gave up all hope of pullet eggs back in November. I was not expecting eggs 'til mid January.

My 3 suspects for the new layers here are:
A black Orpington & an English Lav Orp - both are 35 weeks old
A Coronation Sussex - only 23 weeks, but the comb is very red. She's very large, so perhaps the development will be more like the Orpington.

Quote: I was taking 50 cents off for bringing cartons. But still I would get back mismatched cartons, not the ones I sent out. And some people did not care about the 50 cents. Then with the changes in how many eggs I had available, getting regular buyers was hard so it became a friends and family thing.

@Leahs Mom I have a few pullets that I hatched late in the summer, heritage breeds, no eggs yet. The BLRW seem to be the least ready to lay.

These girls were late May hatch so I was surprised. The others of the breed layed around 20-22 weeks.

Maybe they're duds? (That's "duds" not "dudes".

I guess they'll have to do 2 a day to make up for it when they get started.

Yea mine are early May and early June hatches. I don't think I've heard the roos crow yet either and certainly haven't tried mounting the pullets yet.

A rooster question:
My former roo always let us know his gender. (Crowing & mating hens nonstop)
My current boy crows a lot less (It's wonderful!) However, I don't see him mate often anymore. Do they mate less during the winter months or could he have low T?
Around 22 weeks old, he would only go after the girls his own age. The bigger hens intimidated him! Eventually, he mated them too - then got pecked & chased away for his attention. I've seen him do the dance recently, but he seems to have stopped chasing the girls around. He's an 8 month old, giant Lavender Orpington. Could he have learned manners or will the mating pick up when spring hits?
