Thanks, it's good to be back. I don't have a hand gun but I now want to get one, the rifle is too much with feed buckets and jugs of water....Good to have you back @chick rookie !! Praying things stay calmed down for you. Your coyote attack sounds scary! I think I'll start carrying my 38 out to do chores with me again!!!
I am getting 5 to 8 eggs a day now out of the 20 hens I have left. and am happy for them, a couple of weeks ago I was only getting 1 or 2. All my last years pullets are laying so that waiting game is over.Although the days are getting longer, they aren't getting much longer very quickly. This will start to accelerate in Feb. But don't count on the little bit more of daylight now triggering anyone to start laying or pick up on their laying. That will happen more likely in March or April. What you are probably seeing is the girls bodies recognizing they need a break from laying and it's perfectly natural. I take the attitude that any eggs I get from the girls right now are a gift, but I will be keeping an eye on who starts laying when, especially with my breeds that I intend to breed from. Early laying is definitely a trait to encourage.
now it is picture time.... my favorite time!!!
