INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I am cutting back, but the lady drove to Foleys and bought these SLW as chicks, was moving to town, and came WAY down on the price. But now Megan Loves them, first LF she has ever really liked, When she goes out there the whole group of them run to her for mealworms, so looks like I'm stuck with them. !!!

Megan is keep a small group of silkies/showgirls/frizzles/ and one frizzled showgirl. I'm giving a quad to my grandson Matthew (Heathers son). That leaves me about 7 hens to sell.

I use one bedroom as a hatching room, then mine go to the grage, hasn't been a vehicle in there in years. !!

My mom lived with us for 5 yrs, before she passed. It IS  like having a KID in the house.  !!

Mine are in a spare bedroom also. I have tubs for chicks, 1 sportsmen incubator and 3 strofoam incubators that I hatch in

I don't know if I'll be able to make it out your way on Saturday, but I'm curious about the silkie hens?? Any showgirls for sale? Colors?

Sorry for all the questions.

@happy hoosiers

Good to have you!

I vote for wood chips. It makes a beautiful, healthy deep litter for the birds and breaks down into the greatest soil under it. The birds can scratch and dig up wonderful worms and insects in there, and it keeps the run from becoming impacted, unhealthy earth.

I have read that sand is more of a vector for disease and cocci, and I know several people that quit having health issues after removing sand and replacing with the wood chips. I think there is a lot of information that backs that up and I've loved the chips.

You can often contact tree services in your area and they will sometimes bring a load of chips and leave you a plie on your property free for the asking. I use those in my outdoor runs. When I'm cleaning out my coop, I also put all those shavings - poo and all - into the run. The poo breaks down in the weather and makes a great nitrogen to carbon mix that creates a healthy soil underneith.

Having said that, there are others that love sand and swear by it.

I know a few of you were rooting for her, so I thought I'd let y'all know, Cubby didn't make it to her 10th birthday. :(

She had been wasting away for a couple weeks now, even though she was eating. I think the only reason she had been eating was because she considered what I was giving her (wetted crumbles) a treat. She stopped eating a couple days ago, which I think was the beginning of the end for her. I was able to bribe her into eating with one of her favorite foods, scrambled eggs, but I don't think there was anything to be done by that point. She was in the process of dying when I woke up this morning, very tired and disconnected. She passed away quietly an hour or two later. She was about 2 weeks away from her birthday, so close. I was looking forward to putting together her birthday 'cake'...

Rest well, old girl.

If anyone wants hatching eggs for fun or for laying hens, I've got ,mixed flock eggs, that will all be half Cochin or polish ( those are my roos)some are half EE so possible blue egg layers,$10/dozen; LF bbs Cochin, $25/dozen ,and various colors of silkies. Silkie flock is mixed colors due to them not being separated by color yet. Could get whites, partridge, grays, blues, blacks, splash, blue cream, or a combination. Very fluffy $25/dozen Columbia City.

Martinsville RK has white and brown turkeys in. Runner rouen and Khaki Campbell ducks along with straight run BA, RIR and BOs. .oh and the Jersey Giants. My aunt said they are supposed to be getting bantams in soon. Didn't know what kind. Probably the mix variety like last year.

Ive been very concerned about AI but my son really wants a duck. Opinions? I like the look of a grown rouen but also khaki, any words of wisdom from experienced duck owners?

Oh and no males so I will not have one, and we have no pond Or body of water...well a pool..but I would look to install a pond insert of sorts.

Thanks Leah's mom. Will definately take that into consideration. How often do you have to totally replace the pine chips ? You just remove what's dirty as needed ? Sorry but totally new with this and want to do right for the girls.
