INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Ok so far I've noticed one thing that's different between the CornX vs layers....
Can you guess what it is???

THEY EAT A LOT MORE!!!!!!

In a half asleep brain fog this morning, I went to TSC to get feed because we have been out for a day (scratch dinner last night). Well I got home and went to put it in the feeder, and realized I got pellets instead of crumbles. They all looked at me like I was nuts. Instantly they went from ravenously hungry, to 'nevermind we'll peck around elsewhere'.

Surely they will est the pellets if they are hungry enough won't they? I had been considering switching them to pellets anyway. I guess this will be the test.

Mine reacted the same way when I went to pellets. I believe it is just because it is different. Mine got used to it, and they eat them now with no issues. They waste less too.

If you wet it they will probably be more likely to gobble it up as it turns to a crumbly mash

I'm not sure I want to wet down a 20 lb feeder full of pellets for 40 chickens LOL. They will just have to get used to it. The silkies ate it right away. The big kids are just scratch and crumbles spoiled.

Did you have a (JOYfull) time while at our local TSC? Lol

I am beginning to partially come out of the illness induced fog that hit my house 2 weeks ago and slowly worked it's way through everyone. Not the flu but definitely it's evil cousin. After 4 days of H-E-double hockey sticks I felt somewhat better Monday and did too much Monday and Tuesday and set my self way back again, I am so ready for this to be over. Amazing how fast a house can fall apart when everyone is sick. The animals are all fed and alive, so that is good, and us people have not had much appetite so feedng us has not been much of an issue!

2 days ago, and also the Tuesday one week before we added our next 6 chicks from @kittydoc. We now have 3 Jubilee orps, 2 Lav/Split Orps and one Lav Orp, hoping to add another lav soon if her hatch goes well (fingers crossed). The one Jubilee is older than the rest and feathering out so beautifully. It cracks me up b/c when the feathers grow out they stick almost straight out! It's like they have to make room for all that other fluff and what better way than to grow straight out! I am so totally in love with all these birds - surprise, surprise! But the Jubilees are my favorites, sh-sh-sh don't tell the rest. I am mesmerized by how they are feathering out. I feel like they are changing so fast if I sit and stare I see them change before my eyes!

We've had some excitement. The young neighborhood hawk stalked us for a day a week and a half ago. That gorgeous Monday we were all outside all day. No casualties, it never came into the actual yard and we have not seen it close (in the neighbors tree) since, but I have heard it, and we have it and perhaps it's mother circling not too far away. The dog seems to be doing his job well, but the girls have also spent more time locked up than I'd like.

I am so far behind, not sure I'll get caught up on posts but had comments from awhile back that I never made, so here goes:

First, regarding everyone's input on designing a coop - Thanks! I think we probably will be going with a shed or 2. Unfortunately I have had to let more than one good shed deal go. I won't buy one without seeing it first and we have been too sick and weak to go anywhere. Made it to kittydoc Tuesday and that did me in. @SallyinIndiana I really like the idea of making the drawing with 2 floors, one 6 inches higher. Very good idea. And never thought of the removable door gaurd (for lack of a better term), brilliant. That is a must. I also have discovered that it probably needs to be 8 inches tell not just 6. The (non removable) door guard in our current coop is 6 inches and they are constantly kicking the liter out. @racinchickins yes, storage in the coop is a must. Have that built into my multiple plan ideas for whatever size shed we find. Also am looking towards designing a way to easily mix up the flock. The plans we bought last year, for a coop I'm glad we did not build, had one really good idea, it has divisions with large sliding doors between sections, almost like a large pop door so you can easily divide or mix the flock. Starting small, with 2 playhouses and seeing other peoples coops and ideas and learning what I like and don't like really is the way to go. I know what is most important to me now and what drives me crazy (like bumping my head every time I go in and out of the playhouse!)!

@jchny2000 & @minmin1258 very jealous on both of your incredible deals! So are your coops going to look something like this: http://home-depot.littlethings.com/home-depot-shed-chicken-coop/

@leslea I love your story. I know it was good b/c I was not ready for it to be over! In 500 words you had me totally invested in your characters lives and I wanted to know what would happen next!

And now I have completely exhausted my ability to sit up at the computer. How pathetic is that!
