INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

CCL question for those of you that have had adults:

I have read several reviews lately from folks I know stating that their CCL roosters are mean and agressive. These are folks that have several breeds and have had experience with different rooster breeds. A couple of them quit keeping them because of the disposition of the roos.

Have any of you that have had ADULT roos for a couple years (CCL) had that experience?

@jchny2000 since seeing my IB pair mating over the weekend I was told I can expect her to start laying in a couple of weeks! I've yet to see her or my BS hens wings start to drop but Oh I can't wait cuz you bet I'll be posting those pics and setting every egg they give! Given I can find them!

My DH has the week off Thank goodness and he told me to make my materials list so he can go shopping and offered to have me 4 pens built by end of week!! My goal ultimately is 8 but I'm happy with 4 for this week! Lol!

I'll plan to have my Black Copper, Blue Copper and Golden Cuckoo Marans in 3 and I haven't decided on the 4th yet! Probably Olive Eggers! I already have had my frizzle Cochin with hen separated and put all the silkies in the small coop. Even though the silkies are of different colors I don't mind, would like to see some crosses of those anyways.
Awesome news! I am really pleased on my first pen. We are doing tractor style so the can be moved often. We havent decided on the roof yet, I am leaning towards using barn siding, lighter weight.

@jchny2000 I am conflicted about your EEs! I am just so worried about ending up with way too many roos if everything I get is straight run. And you have LOs. DD informed me we need another Lav b/c we got 3/jubilees and 3/splits but only 2 lavs.
What is the coloring of your EEs I think you told me but I forgot.

Can you plz Pm me approx hatch dates & approx ages of your various lavs and how much for them (EE & lav bitty chicks and how much for older lavs. Thanks!)
Pm'd you, thanks!

I hate I have to go into the office tomorrow and Wed... Means I won't be here to supervise! Being a night owl kills me when I have to shower and all that nonsense to go into the office! Blah!

Oh and we had a dust bathing frenzy today with the nice weather!

Those peas dust bathing crack me up because they're just all legs, neck and wings!!
Not to mention they are trying to fit in chicken sized "tubs"!
I just found out my neighbor rehomed his (used to be mine) and sold off his chickens.

He stopped in today to see about DH turning his garden with our tractor. I just adore your IBs, beautiful!

Well, my very first set of day-old peepers survived the night in the garage. I'm using a Sunbeam heating pad that lets you leave it on indefinitely, and that seems to be working.

They will eventually figure out where the food and water are, right?
I tap the food with my finger and that gets them going! And as mentioned, just dip the beaks.

I had an unforgettable moment last night, my niece and her son (my great-nephew) Brody came over last night, Brody is about two and one-half years old and has never seen live chickens before. My niece was telling him about the "chick chicks," and told him to come see the "chick chicks," and they are chicks, but Brody took one look in the brooder and the first thing he says is "chickens." It was so funny, to him, those were not chick chicks at all, those are chickens. I have no clue where he got that from at such a young age, but it was priceless.
Thats precious, loved this.

Quote: Very interesting!

Quote: One of these drakes is really sweet, nice big guy, yours if you want him. I only keep 2, drake fights are horrible, and very hard to break up. I would rather stop geese fights, scovies have very sharp claws. I have a few boys that are mean to the duck hens so they won't make a good flock drake. This guy is gorgeous black fella that you are welcome to, it will give you chocolate and black ducklings. His parents are unrelated to your hen also.
You are welcome to come for processing! I think there will be 4, undecided on 1 right now, he is a lavender but am not liking his aggression with my goose hens.
It gets manageable after time, buts still not easy for me either. I keep reminding myself I gave them a full life, and its why they are here.
Sorry to hear about your poults. I tried getting ours at RK one year, and they all flipped. Just too much stress for them. Poults are very fragile the first week and I think all the touching and noise is too much for them.
You did the right thing for them, cuddling really helps them. I adore poults and goslings! Both are just so loveable.

Talk about Chimera/Gynandomorph Chickens has made me really want one, they are so neat. The genetics behind it is really cool and very interesting. They look awesome too.

The two welsummer chicks I have are doing great and their wing feathers have definitely come in quickly, they love to throw themselves around the brooder, especially the rooster. And they poop, a lot!

yesssss! they do!
I forgot how much mess ducklings make, ugh! my tiny lil mallards are about 1/3 grown already, looking like 4 are drakes! They were outdoors today for the first time, just adorable.

I need help. I got this assortment of chicks a few weeks ago. I've determined one is an appenzeller spitshaubin . I thought this one was a cochin, but now not sure. I've never seen this color cochin. Could it be a maran?
This one has lacy feathers.

Any ideas? It's gonna be fun watching them grow out.

Thought this last one wad a polish, but it has yellow legs and 5 toes.
Adorable!

a gynandromorph has a female side & a male side - our Roo has 2 male sides that are distinctly different from left or right side - I would call him a bi-andromorph (if there is such a word?)
here's some pictures for anyone that haven't seen him :

. . . . . & we got him from the Pullet bin at a pet supply store (their stock came from Townline)
WOW! Thats wild!

Ok so I haven't seen a brooder like this one, maybe there was one posted and I missed it. But here is one of my larger brooders and it's currently housing our 12 CornX and 4 BBB Turkeys. It's a pool with welded fence wrapped tightly around the pool. I cut the fence and left a long word on each row to wrap and lock into the other end of the fence. This made a very secure seam. I then cut a doorway large enough for my daughter to slip in and feed/clean the brooder! Then wrapped some heavy paper (just what I had on hand) around the fence to keep heat and chicks inside and other critters out. Tell me what you think about it.

You can see the new feeder and waterer they work good!
This is exactly how I brood larger birds. I used a roll of 1in x2in x 3ft welded wire. I have 2 smaller and one larger kiddie pool I use, then when broodings over they go out for the geese and ducks! By late summer our pond will sometimes go dry. This is great for goslings especially, since they get big really fast!

I haven't, just young adults. Interested in opinions on this too! I didn't keep mine when I downsized, but had planned to add them again in the future.

So far, that's been my luck from RK/Townline this year. Two girls for every boy.... (cue Beach Boys)--and from the pullet bins, no less.

He'd just be a chimera, to my knowledge. Given the type, it's got a 50% chance of being a gynandromorph, and your roo just rolled over 75% on the percentile dice of genetic mishaps. Two roos for the price of one (though it would be very interesting to figure which half his testes come from or if he somehow has two functioning testes, one from each side. Roos only have one normally, which is how some hens wind up becoming roosters later in life if their ovary is damaged). At least your rooster's an awesome conversation piece :D

We weren't sure if he could reproduce / fertile or not, but his son has the same floppy type comb (tho not quite as bad), so we're pretty certain he can / is
