INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Wow a lot of activity here lately!

I'm due to put some eggs into lockdown tomorrow night & saw one egg wiggling inside the turner. Should I move it to the hatcher earlier? The hatch date should be on Easter Sun, April 5 (maybe 4th). My broody started these eggs & I didn't want to toss them when we swapped them out or the "planned" eggs. (I saw development, so we popped them into the incubator.)

Either way, I'll take a pass on "licking" them.

Especially since they started with a broody! Early lockdown a day or so won't hurt. Remember, the natural state of hatching is on the side anyways.

Got some lumber to build two meat bird grow out tractors tomorrow!! They will be an A frame design 8x8 hopefully they turn out good!

If I pull a breeding pair from the free range flock, how long until it is untainted by the other roosters? How long does the hen stay fertile by a rooster?
I always wait a full 4 weeks on chickens. Then, I have no doubt the breed is pure. Other species I add a week, muscovy are a 5 week hatch so I wait past 5 weeks.

Quote: It will be a weekend for sure. I usually make sure I have a full day free for it, and put it off until there is no other choice too. Forgot to say that none of yours were a problem bird, its my rooster population from last years broody hatches.
The poults may have chilled during shipping also, thats a killer for them. My 16 are doing great! I just adore poults. #17 the free "meal maker" didn't make it but was splayed when the poults arrived at the PO.. I let them know about it.

Came home from work today to find one of my new little cochin babes dead. She's with a broody and 5 other chicks. She looked smooshed but was very cold however not stiff yet.. ?? Hate that. It was the only one that was a different color.
The rust red one pictured here.

I am so sorry to hear it. Can't help but think the chick had an internal problem. May have passed and still under mama.
This is my English black/lavender split Orpington, Cogburn. He is still a baby, having hatched in late August last year. I love the way he's coming along. The harsh winter shows on his comb, but I think he's going to keep it all given time. He's with one of my American lavender hens (Hinkjc line).

LOVELY on both, Hinkjc has amazing lines!
I have had some people ask me this and I can't seem to find the answer for them. Can you eat your chickens eggs if they have mg? Anyone know? I thought yes, but didn't want to misinform
Thats what I thought too, hope for input?

Yeah I kept watching out for it because it was always under her And it was the one that hatched with a funky bare patch on one side of its head. It did come out and eat and things but just not as often as the others. Just hope the others stay well. They were a week old Monday I think..

Happy April Fools day! Within the first 5 minutes I was up my 14 yo son got me 3 times. I opened our bedroom door and ran smack into plastic wrap (this was before coffee!).

Here are some pics of our latest photo shoot:

the first 3 of our "fake mama" for our 2 teeny chicks. The funniest part about it is they occasionally loose each other in it and freak out:

The older 6 had their first outdoor field trip yesterday and loved it:

2 of our hens running in terror from the bitty babes. Today they weren't terrified, they were curious and watched them very intently:
Great idea! Loved to see your pics also! Chicks are too adorable

Quote: goodness yes, cant believe how big some of my chicks are already!

thank you, I have 2 coops and i thought i knew every thing there was to know about bio-security. LOL
1 wild bird can mess everything up, even something as simple as shoes. I feel really lucky since the majority of my chickens free range, aside from the bantam games, LO and EE

Has anyone read about the coop of the week? (The chilton) It looks very familiar and I wander where the idea came from

will go and check it out!

Thats really the easiest build. DH is still asking if I will be doing CX soon, guessing I will be but I need some tractors for them too.

Way to go!
Your post really made me laugh.
Liked the mental image of the pre-coffee April Fool's joke. Then the "fake mama hen" and the pics of the silly chickens running in terror.
Looks like you had a great time at your house today!
