INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Had the pleasure of meeting @1crazychick and DH this evening, very nice visit!
Had a big tree hit by lightning and scared me half to death! It ripped about 30 feet of the wood and bark off 1 side, and hit less than 10 feet from my hogs! They were probably more scared than I was, poor guys wouldn't come out of the houses. Glad the next few days are rain free, everything here is a miserable muddy mess. My hog pens are swimming pools, we have to move the fellas to the big pen anyways! The boys are about 120 and 150 now, so it will be a fun task moving them lol. Our little potbelly marla is easy, she just walks into the dog crate.

The wind was something last night. We had 1 pen flipped and another tossed into our fence. No injuries to the birds but quite shocking as the pens are not light weight and they did not move around at all last year unless DH and I were wanting them to move.

Quote: OH and my turkey house we were building is flipped over and leaning on the window sill of the detached garage! Yikes, that thing is heavy! Lucky it didn't break the window. Hope we aren't in for more strong storms this spring. Neighbors lost their only duck this week, I suspect a fox. Their ducks and geese come over and comingle every day. Sad thing is they now have all drakes! I told them I would hatch them a few if they want to add some hens. They are sure chasing my pekin hens everywhere lol! I haven't started to hatch pekin since the seasonal birds are laying but need to start setting eggs anyways, freezer is pretty empty.

Hopping back a few pages I missed a few posts. The tighter the tarp is the longer it lasts and stays put. also turns water better. I use them a lot for temp coops and tractors.
Picking up my ordered CornX from Rural King after work today. These 25 I'm really going to watch closely for weight gain and feed consumption. My 3 week olds are weighing on avg 1.12# as of yesterday. Is this a good weight for 3 week CornX or are they light/heavy? They look good to me but I'm not an expert.
I didn't weigh until we processed, but feel them. If they are doing well, they are heavy for the size they are, so to speak. at that age they look bulky in the breast already and have the "meaty strut"

the knees look like they don't bend! When they are running up to greet you, they run stiff legged and all the meat bird types walk that way due to the weight.

here is the "ideal comparison" from Meyer

one last post, 22 hours to go on the last 2015 fundraiser!
https://www.booster.com/inbyc2015tanktop
Proceeds will go to help pay for our get together, including food, games for the kids and door prizes for us big kids too
big_smile.png
In the past many of our contributing members paid for all the expenses. We are working towards it not costing any of us a lot of money to get together and have a good time!
Get a pretty awesome tank top that tells other folks you love chickens and support being a little more self substantial!
Natural food is much healthier and safer for us, know what you are eating! You know what your hens are fed, that's half the battle.
New folks joining our thread, WELCOME!!!!

Here is a good piece of info that will help you understand more of why we are all here. Thanks to @Mother2Hens and @atrueb00 for working on this document.

Procrastinators Unite!

Yes, I waited til the last minute to order, but we got our Indiana Backyard Chickens tank tops - have you? Don't forget like I almost did and miss out on these great tanks! A sudden moment of panic at 2:30 AM revealed I am not too late, I actually had 21 more hours!

I sadly won't be able to make ChickenFest, but last year was such so much fun, I had to help out at least!

Here is the link in case you missed it before.

I'll be less active for a while, but wanted to ask people to pray for my family. My sis went to the ER gasping for air & then into ICU on Thurs. My dad (age 85) had to drop her off so he could get home to care for my mom - with pneumonia. He currently has bronchitis himself. Thurs night, my mom stopped breathing. She went to a different hospital by ambulance & is still in ICU & not responsive. The three live together & all caught something. Life is changing fast. We need prayers during this difficult time.
