INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I would vote it depends on the emergency. You can see when the last time that member logged into BYC but messages go to emails too. Still if a person does not have the time to log into BYC, its possible that they had a real true emergency come up and its all they can do to take care of immediate pressing concerns.
One example might be the birth of a new baby. If its the first the dad might even be living at the hospital, especially if it happened to be a premie. There there is the opposite, a seemingly healthy person gets the notice of a week or less to live because of a giant tumor or whatever.
Paypal gives you 30 days I think to file a claim. So even if you don't end up with eggs you can get your money back.

She did finally respond that she is in the hospital and said she would have someone gather and ship eggs either Saturday or Tuesday. I told her that I wanted to cancel the order since It will miss the window on the other eggs that arrived today and I don't want a third hatch date. It has shown her checking in here several times before she responds to me, but I'm not accusing her of anything if she has a real emergency going on. I was already thinking I had over purchased for my current coop space so I am not upset about it! I am hoping she will refund the money at this point!

She has broken the original agreement (regardless of reason). If you are set not to get them, the. Just file a claim with PayPal. They give the seller 10 days? to reply and try to work something out. If no agreement is made, paypal will make the ruling (honestly almost always in favor of buyer).

I believe you have 45 days to file claims with PayPal.

@jchny2000 I've loved geese ever since I saw them at your farm just a few months after you started our wonderful Indiana Thread!

Btw, when I posted my cat's story, I meant to say that the veterinarian said that this past year they've seen a large increase in backyard chicken owners making chicken appointments!
You would love the Sebastapol geese. They are pure eye candy, and very docile, gentle birds. The feathers are curled, and are just gorgeous. So many people are keeping chickens again! It makes perfect sense to have your own eggs that you know what went into making them.

Exactly so! Ducks love their water, and ponds are so much better.

Good Morning Hoosier BYCer's!! Well I saw an ad on C List for some Amer. Bresse chicks for sale and my wife and I were able to make a trip yesterday early evening down to Mooresville where we had the pleasure of meeting Patrick ( racingchickens ) if I got the screen name wrong forgive me please, We had a very nice visit and Patrick was kind enough to show us his set up ( he has an unbelievable selection of birds to include two very cool breed of turkey and far too many breeds of chicken for me to remember them all. And before we knew it we were heading home wit (2) three week old Bresse's ( our first chicks ) and we're excited to get started!!!

So I am a bit irritated and not sure if I am being irrational in my irritation. I purchased a set of eggs on one of the other threads, paid on Monday. The eggs were supposed to ship on Tuesday. On Wednesday I get a PM that the person had an emergency and wouldn't ship them until Thursday. I responded back that I was fine with that, but asked if fresh eggs would be included because I worried they wouldn't get here until Monday if shipped Thursday, and the eggs were gathered more than a week ago. I got no response. I sent another PM asking if the eggs have shipped and got no response. What is the protocol here? The eggs I purchased a day later have already been delivered. I did a search and this person does not seem to have any black marks as a seller, but I really am not even sure I want to deal with this any longer and don't want a third hatch date to deal with. Is my irritation warranted or is this fairly common? Boo.

I would be upset too, if you are not getting a confirmation the eggs you receive will be viable and fresh. Hopefully, you will hear soon. I can see if its a loss of a family member or severe injury, or illness, etc there will be a delay in response however. Hope you get a reply soon.
Wouldn't you know that when I have two incubators going, I get a broody hen!! 11/12 Marans eggs I got from @ellymayRans are going good. Looks like I will have about a week in between hatches. I need to set up a new brooder this weekend for them, since my little Francis and her mates are still in the current brooder for several more weeks.

My Buff Orp, Butter, has decided Tuesday to sit. I have three nest boxes going right now (I had more, but none were used) and she is in the middle one. There are at least two eggs under her, she will not let anyone near her! She puffs up real big and starts making noises. It seems like she doesn't want any of the others using the nest boxes because for the past two days, I have had a drop in eggs laid in the coop...I'm so excited to find them in other places later on...not.

I think this weekend I will get something set up in the garage for her and just pick the whole box up and let her get mad when I move her!
I move broodies at night, seems to be the best choice. Every bird species I keep are comatose after dark, makes it easier.

So someone released a clearly tame Toulouse goose and it has taken up residence with the ducks near my moms house. Being spring it's fine but I'm a little worried about winter because it can not fly. Being in Michiana means lots of snow and cold. I've considered catching it. Thoughts? I've caught it before with bread. It's very friendly will follow you everywhere.
I would for sure take it in. Its not a breed thats meant to sustain itself in the wild. They are a lovely gentle goose and are cold hardy.

WOW!!! Guess what Tractor Supply did??

First the back story - about 2 1/2 weeks ago DD and I were at TSC. In the middle of the store right by the chicks was a giant puddle. It was a nice day but on the heels of bad weather. Of course she was looking at the chicks, and did not see the puddle. She wiped out hard and slammed her side into a display of boxes on pallets. Several people saw it happen and called for help. It took over 5 minutes for an employee to come which bothered me more than anything else b/c several people were asking them to come, they announced it over the loudspeaker more than once. Other customers wanted wanted to call 911. I knew she'd be OK, she is only 11 and resilient! She just had to get over the initial shock and pain. The associate manager finally made it to us and was pretty shooken up over the whole thing. He made an incident report and a few days later I got a call from headquarters - was she okay etc. They asked if she would use a gift card for TSC. I laughed - she would rather go to TSC than a toy store any day. THEY SENT HER A $100 GIFT CARD!!! I am in shock - never expected that! She is so excited to get some chicken stuff and maybe a shirt or who knows. Right now she is pretty excited that she wiped out in TSC!
I am glad she is ok, I bet she is excited!

Kinda a bummer to not get them.

I'm sure no one here can understand over-purchasing for coop space. I mean how could that ever happen? Don't you just build more?

lau.gif
I am the worst at it! And am always building more coops.
Quote: What a mess, hope you get a refund.

Quote: They are really good at refunding. I have used PayPal about 16 years now I think, every claim I had was promptly resolved.

Haha Love the chicken checking it out! The ducks look happy, but I think that ducks always look happy!

Some of us were lucky enough to attend the first Chickenfest, which was held at @racinchickins 's amazing farm/compound/state-of-the-art green building/estate.

I remember welcoming tmctit, but think I missed @Finnie and @lilrider -- Welcome to the Indiana Thread! More info on the links at the bottom of this post.

Wear gloves when you move her! Is that the truth about nesting boxes-- whether you have 4 or 24, they all clamor over the same one.

That's nice, but I'm not too surprised. Sadly in today's legal environment, they were probably afraid you might sue the store or company. If they make you happy, you won't file a claim. I'm glad it all worked out & your DD is happy. So, the question is: What kind of chicks will she be buying with the gift card?
@flyladyrocks ~ I agree with @Faraday40 that TSC will be glad if they can get by with sending a gift card instead of receiving a lawsuit! Your DD will have fun going on a shopping frenzy.

@Faraday40 ~ I meant to mention that I liked hearing about your chicken that learned how to time the lawn sprinkler so she wouldn't get wet! I've always wanted a book about chicken behavior, but found that most chicken books cover the same topics: coops, chicks, eggs, etc. I recently was in a Books-a-Million store in Louisville where I saw this book pictured below on an endcap on sale for $9.99. It was just the type of book I've wanted-- It has fascinating information about chicken intelligence, behavior, training, etc. I wish I could buy a copy for everyone! Hopefully, local libraries have copies in their collections. If you look it up on amazon, you can "Look Inside" to see some of the pages. The Chicken: A Natural History: Dr. Joseph Barber, Janet ...

I concur he has quite the setup!!! I'm already looking @ using the lean to section behind our barn for a " Real Coop " and use the little A Frame we're getting started with as a "nursery " to raise chicks in. I'm afraid the insanity has begun.....lol Yesterday with the outstanding day we had I let the little guys outside to play in the pen and they loved it. Thanks for the warm welcome!!!!

Yes he told me he hosted the inaugural Chickenfest @ his property and laughed @ himself for ALL the Biosecurity FAILS he commited. He's a nice fella and is quite knowledgeable for only being in this hobby for 2 years. The BAD part for me is we live TOO CLOSE and will be TOO EASY to keep increasing the size of our flock locally!!!!!

And here's a warm welcome to any and ALL newcomers to BYC :)

If anyone is in the Franklin area, this is where we get our fresh beef from:

He just took in "our" half a cow so in 14 days or so I will have the most wonderful steaks. I still have hamburger from my fall cow for this weekend but if not I'd be over there getting some.

Editing to add if anyone wants ground goat meat for their pets or dogs, I have some I can part with at cost. Otherwise my chickens will gradually enjoy our prior buck.
