INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

There is someone on Craigslist trying to sell one of those poultry crates for $75 so I'd say you got good deal! What will you use them for?
We scored our own deal yesterday. Went up to visit @ChickCrazed and on the way decided to see if a craigslist post for free fencing was still there. It had been there for 3 days so I figured it would be gone. Still there! 14 solid wood fence posts and about 80 feet of wire fencing. I am so eggscited! The lady was so happy it is being used for chickens and we will be one step further in getting a chicken yard divided from the garden and driveway.

The cool thing is I'm using them for their intended purpose of transporting my CX to butcher. I needed something better than s dog crate so these were perfect!

Did you recently turn off a heat lamp? Mine significantly reduced their production when I turned off their lamp and they had more dark hours but have picked back up. They also may be mad and stressed over not being able to run around the yard. Are you hearing the egg song? I'd check them when you hear it and make sure they aren't eating the eggs. I know you aren't seeing any broken eggs but I am not sure you would. The couple times I dropped and broke an egg they were on it in seconds and if I had not immediately kicked pine shavings over it and called for someone to bring me a shovel to remove all traces of it it would have been completely gone in 30 seconds. How many do you have and how old? I guess it could be possible they decided to start molting at the same time. Okay I think I'm officially out of possibilities now!
Lol, that sounds good to me. They did work really hard this winter. It was their first year and we got bunches of eggs from them.

Hello Hoosier BYCers

Anyone out there using " spent grain" from homebrewers??

.I have an opportunity to get with a home brewer and receive his " spent grains "  my Q is....assuming it needs to be dried out before offering to chickens, how do you all dry them out?  Thanks for your replies.....

Paul

I'm no expert but I would think there would be no nutrients left in the grains. I know that brewing extracts most of the nutrients from the grain! Might be a good filler but I think the yeast would have already gotten the goodies from every grain. But like I said I'm no expert.

yes, i have just turned their ligh off just before they stoped. Tney just turned a year old yesterday. Plus, they maybe stressed because i have not been home. I leave at 6:30 am to take the kids to school then it's off to dads to run to run him around. So, i don't get home till 4:00ish. By then i could see them eating them all up.

Not sure how you would dry it out but do you need to? I feed my chickens fermented feed but I don't know enough about spent grains to know how it compares. Maybe this thread can help https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/501083/ok-to-feed-spent-grain-from-brewing-beer

Oh,i have 5 chickens and their coop is 12x12 and the run is 12x12 right now. We do have a back part of the run but, the snow took the roof out. The back part is 12x12 too. How many chickens can i really have?

Yours are almost the same age as my hens. When i turned off the light mine we actually scared to go in the coop. We got a good laugh over that. Also, if they are used to you being home they may miss you. Mine have the run of the yard and love to come visit us and hang out on the windowsills. They are used to seeing us all the time. When we are gone all day they want to be with us as soon as we get home and will actually cry for us if dark is hitting and we loxk them up right away (yes we have spoiled chickens). My guess is they will adjust to less light and your new schedule and start laying again soon. Hopefully it is just a little stress from those 2 factors and not that they are eating them all!
How is your dad doing?

Thanks :)

Did a little searching and found that some Sun dry it and then bag in grain sacks to store, others simply froze it wet or damp and gave them a grain "popsickle" periodically. And it's my understanding Much of the protein and oils are still there after being steeped in the brew stage.
