INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Turns out I am double posting this! I was trying to post this here, but missed the mark! It is posted on the general board as well! HA! Oh well! I have been hovering on this site for several months, watching your beautiful birds survive our very cold winter and learning from all of you! What a treasure trove of information you have been for this newbie! Thank-you for helping us through this past winter and spring! I thought it would be a good idea to finally introduce my gorgeous girls to you and state my future intentions! We got into backyard chicken raising due to my adopted toddler from China eating 2 dozen eggs a week all by herself! I decided that with that kind of appetite for eggs, we might as well raise chickens and have access to that many eggs a week, if not more! On that side of the coin, it has been a success. We acquired a coop and a flock from someone trying to get out of raising chickens. The flock had been severely traumatized and not housed well. We ended up tearing up the coop, building our own, getting rid of over half of the original flock, and buying hatching eggs in November (Thanksgiving to be exact)! Out of our 10 eggs 7 hatched - 3 had significant hatching issues, and one had to be culled (you can see pictures of his malformations on my albums), another little chick got its head stuck in between the lid and the lip of the incubator and died. So, we ended up with 5 total - 2 Light Sussex (the ones who had hatching issues and now live at a friend's home) and 3 gorgeous Lavender Orpington Hens! When those Orps hatched, I was captivated and my interest immediately turned to how can I get some more. This spring I met kittydoc on this forum and she has nicely helped me expand my flock with Black Mix Orps and some more Lavender Orps. We are excited to see some roosters developing! Our intentions are to breed and sell Black and Lavender Orpington hatching eggs and chicks next year. My goal is to go through the NPIP process next spring and make sure we are compliant with the state. We will also be picking up more straight black Orps from a source in Illinois! My husband is requesting an Easter Egger, but we shall see on that one. In the meantime, I learned a bit of a lesson yesterday. One of my pretty lavs was limping and I could see no apparent reason for it. Turns out, I had leg banded them with zip tie number bands. Hers was too tight. Cut it off. Today, she is as good as new. Poor girl. I felt so bad! I have been trying to put in pictures of my pretties, but I cannot seem to get the internet to work today! All my birds are in my albums under my profile! Looking forward to connecting with everyone!

To all the new posters, welcome!! This is a fantastic group of helpful, supportive people.

I also want to let all the new members know about Chickenfest 2015. This year will be the 3rd year for it. It is a meet and greet, where people from all over the state, and a couple other states as well get together to share information, tips, and just talk chicken, or duck, or turkey, or bees, well you get the idea. This year we will also be having some demonstrations on rabbit raising, from start to finish, FF (fermenting feed), raising meal worms. We will also have the honor of having Dr. Geoff Lossie, Purdue Animal Disease & Diagnostic Lab doing a presentation for us. He will be doing an overview of AI (Avian Influenza) its current status in the US, worming protocols, respiratory issues, and general husbandry. We will also be serving dinner. We will have door prizes, and somethings for the younger attendees. There is no cost to attend, but we will accept free will donations. If you are interested in attending, please pm me (barb s).

Please join us for Chickenfest this year. It's an annual event that is a Meet N Greet for our IN BYCers group. There will be a wonderful meal and some great demonstrations. This would be a fantastic opportunity to get to know more of the "family" face to face. Is being held in Goshen, IN this year on Saturday the 27th for more information just msg myself or BarbS. (Or pretty much any one really). Looking forward to seeing a lot of our group there. If you plan to attend don't forget to RSVP. (For those wishing to make a weekend of it there are a couple of us staying at a campground 15-20 mins from the facilities, msg me for more info)

Hi all, catching up on about 150 posts at the moment. :th

I was stressing bad over this and that (mainly finals), got myself super upset, had a panic attack or two, and I ended up doing the unthinkable--I unsubscribed from this thread! I had to, I needed to concentrate on my exams and not be tempted to check every 2 minutes for new posts. Today was my final final for the semester, so I'm resubscribed. And if anyone is wondering, I'm fairly sure I did good with the exams. :D The results should be in in a few days. I think the professors have until next Tuesday, though, to submit our final scores, so who knows?

So while I'm catching up on posts, I thought I would post on something strange that happened here. Y'all won't believe this, but I was cleaning up my incubator last Sunday and making sure it was still working properly when suddenly 6 eggs from my call duck pair fell right on into it! It was spooky!  Okay, okay, honestly, I lost my battle with temptation. Baby bitty duckies are due around the 29th. :D I really needed something to look forward to this summer!

Editing to add, all caught up! Glad to get my Indiana BYCers fix in again. :D

Thanks, I feel pretty confident. :D I usually have this iffy feeling coming out of finals, but I really buckled down this time and I think I did well.

Barb s messaged me (which was fortunate, because it shows up on my phone when I get a private message!) so yes, mom and I have RSVP'd. :)

I just wanted to give you an update. I believe they found a petting zoo for her (the same day I posted her pic) but I showed them some pics you have posted and they agreed that you would be a great option if the zoo doesn't work out for any reason. I believe they also have several so she won't be lonely anymore. Thank you for all the info and willingness to take her if needed.

Awe..I hope she has a happy home.

I really do like to help no matter the scenario if I can and it works for our family too of course. Anytime.

If things change for them just reach out to me. Nice Peahens are much harder to come by more so than a chicken hen. ;)
