So far - for the last 3 years, I have not had any issue with flies. .
I "think" it might be due to using deep litter and having given free-choice lacto-fermented feed. The lacto-fermented doesn't draw flies (unlike yeast-fermented feed which draws fruit flies in droves) to the feed bowl, and I don't even have a fly issue in the deep littered outdoor run area.
Even when I had the chicks last year that were confined to part of the hen shed and a 10x10 run, their area showed no fly issue. They were in there for a full 18 weeks as we had a hawk family that was staking out and I didn't want the young'uns to be out running as I work during the day and couldn't keep an ear open.
