INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

@SallyinIndiana
Thanks for that link!

So far - for the last 3 years, I have not had any issue with flies. .

I "think" it might be due to using deep litter and having given free-choice lacto-fermented feed. The lacto-fermented doesn't draw flies (unlike yeast-fermented feed which draws fruit flies in droves) to the feed bowl, and I don't even have a fly issue in the deep littered outdoor run area.

Even when I had the chicks last year that were confined to part of the hen shed and a 10x10 run, their area showed no fly issue. They were in there for a full 18 weeks as we had a hawk family that was staking out and I didn't want the young'uns to be out running as I work during the day and couldn't keep an ear open.

Have you seen this short film? It might be a bit out of date but it does show goats clearing away stuff in a natural setting. And it is at a level that retained my children's interest. They even noticed that my ebay milk pump is not at pretty or fast as the professional set up.

We have gotten flies here for as long as I can remember. Long before we got chickens. But last year was overboard in comparison to other years. So during the winter I got my name on the list and placed my order for the bugs. @racinchickins had tried them last summer and he recommended them to me. So anyone ordering for the first time can provide either of our names as the referral person. The upfront cost looked a bit high to me at the beginning of the 2014 fly season so I choose to skip the bug method and stuck with traps and sprays. But come the end of the 2014 season I had spent as much on traps as I would have on the bugs. So this year I got the bugs coming every month to eat the other bugs.
