INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Oh thats great news! She is saying to you she is ready to be back out with the chickens!
My 15 BBB are fully free ranging during the day now, right with my new lavender youngsters and a few other birds I kept to add to my flocks. I have one more small group of chicks that will be out in a few weeks, and that's it for me chicken wise this season. DD is wanting to do at least 1 round of CXs this year yet, so I may go in on a batch. Probably no more than 25 for me tho, household size is much smaller with DDs moved away. These turkeys will take up some freezer space also, and I have 2 hogs to process in about 2 months.

It was really funny at te time. She acted like she never left. I am just crossing my fingers she doesn't have a relapse.

On another note. Does anybody know where I can buy some parlor roller hatching eggs? My tumbler is trying to set on her eggs but they aren't fertile. I can't find any anywhere. I assumed they sold pigeon hatching eggs just like with any other type if bird. I can find emu and ostrich egg in eBay but not pigeon eggs!

I'm with you. We have a couple hogs to butcher in a week. This fall our calf goes in. Plus turkeys and CX. We just bought a chest freezer from Sears today. Heck of a sale going on right now if anyone needs appliances!

For those of you interested in my CX tractors I can try to explain the way I built them. I didn't write anything down just put them together in my head (I tend to do my projects this way).

I used 2x4's for the base its 8' long by 7'6" wide. I set the front 2x4 back 6" and cut a angle the first 6" of the 8' side boards for skids or skis. This step is not needed now that I put wheels on.
The A frame is built with 2x3's to cut back on weight. It's 5' tall at the peak. There are 3 sections or trusses to the frame. The middle truss is set 4' on center. This allowed me to use a 4' section of fencing to wrap the open area. Then I cut scrape steel siding at 4' and screwed the siding to the trusses. The door is built out of 2x2's and is 18" wide by around 4' tall. Everything that was not covered by the siding is wrapped with fencing and stapled. I braced the corners with 2x3's cut at 1'. I also ran a brace across the truss 1' down from the peak. The peak is covered with a long section of siding. That's just about it. Nothing fancy but it works very well to grow out CX and allows them fresh grass daily. Both of these took my son and I about 1hr each to make with no plans just an idea. Like I said before that's how my projects go lol my pallet coop from way back was built the same way from an idea. If you use your imagination it's crazy what you can come up with. Even with these tractors you could frame in a coop with nesting boxes and a ladder to get into the house.

Here is my daughter watering 25 CX. When they get bigger a 5ga waterer and a 30 pound feeder fit well with 25CX. And I believe if needed I could run 10 more birds. They would just need moved 2 times daily instead of 1.
Any questions please fill free to ask. I'm please some of you like the idea. It's simple and easy to make. I will have 2-3 more built next spring.
Thanks so much for posting this! At what age did you move your birds permanently into these?

Hi guys too many quotes... lol so I'll just say it like this: I love all the pic's!!!!! I'll share some in a minute too although I don't have the fancy chicks you guys come up with, some of them I have never even heard of... but that aint saying too much, it was just 2 years ago I found out that there are chickens OTHER then your standard everyday layers... lol
Happy to hear of the chicken recoverys and sorry about the sick and lost. I have had so much of that I feel your pain, course I think we all do. 1 of the great things about this group... we all understand, and NO ONE thinks U R NUTS.
and thanks so much on the close up and explaining your chicken tractor, I just love the ideal and am putting DH to work... again.. O BTW he says thanks!!... lol
So now for some news around our little farm... moved momma silkie out to her own house and run till I can put them all together, anyone have suggestions on what age I can do that?
My SLW just don't seem to be growing, probably just me. But I thought they would have little feathers started out by now??? Do have a cute story about them, yesterday during feed time I heard them peeping loudly so I went to check on them and 1 had gotten a BIG bug, those brown flying hard shelled things, and it was being chased by the other 3 trying to steal her prize... lol should have seen it the bug was as big as she is... well almost but you get it... lol
My "drunken trouble maken few doors down neighbor" and yes that's what I call him. Actually came over and asked if I and " my chicken friend " ( I think he was talking about our new neighbors that moved in last year ) could teach our Roosters to NOT crow till like noon..... he was serious... I laughed so hard I almost cried... told him I would get right on that, but he would have to go ask the other chicken person to do the same with his birds... Why should I be the only one to get a laugh out of it??? right?? or was I just being mean??? lol
My BIG littles (CX's) are doing great, and one of them is a roo I'm sure, he follows me around so close I tripped myslef trying not to step on him yesterday... but it is cute, so far loving their personalities. The roo is called Waddles and the pullet is Chubs.
I absolutely am in-love with my 2 SF's or " Fish Chickens " as DH calls them ... lol Still not sure that my BA are BA's but oh well they are here now.
Now I'll shut up and get to the pic's. Sorry such a long post.

will have to post more latter ( yes I have more lol )my internet is taking way too long to load the pic's. Hope everyone has a great day.

Thanks so much for posting this!  At what age did you move your birds permanently into these?

In the cooler weather overnight lows of 35/40's at 3 weeks
Two weeks old with overnight lows above 40.
I kept a lamp on them at night for the first few days. The CX seem to be a very (heat producing) bird. They don't seem to mind it a bit cooler than warmer.
If anyone builds there own take on one of these please post I would like to see any changes or improvements made!

I got a question, i'm going out to pull weeds any good ideas for killing them that won't harm the chickens?

Are they in an area where letting the chickens at them is not an option? Only asking as they are pretty effective weed (and everything else, lol) killers - but if it's in a bed/garden where there are plants you don't want taken out that wouldn't be such a good option (though, then safe for chickens would also not be a problem).........

I'm back again, got more pic's. And I wanted to let ya all know that my overdosed goat is fine!!!!

nope I guess this is the only one you get. the uploader says it failed 3 times. I give up.
Anyway check out the smile on AJ's face.... lol

just ignore this random post - my DD realized she wrote her request in my account, so I'm deleting it and she is reposting as herself instead of me (on the next page I believe!)!

I need your help with my 4-H project please!
ya.gif

This is my first year in 4-H. I signed up for the poultry project but I don't want any of my babies to get sick so I am not taking them to the fair.

So I decided to do 1 or 2 Poultry posters. I want to show everyone how great the chickens (and their owners) in Indiana are!

My first poster I want to make about Bantams. Then I want to work on one about Heritage Chickens.

Will you please PM me or my mom @flyladyrocks pictures of your chickens? I am still figuring out how I am doing this
big_smile.png
but this is what I think I want - especially close ups of:
1. Picture of Chicks
2. Pictures of Adults
3. Pictures of their eggs - and maybe some bantam eggs with big chicken eggs to compare
4. Your name, and/or the name of your farm, the city and county you live in
5. Anything you want to say about your chickens - a quote you don't mind me putting on the poster

If it is easier to e-mail pictures, when you PM us I can give you my mom's e-mail address.

I am so excited to show off how wonderful Indiana BYCers are!

One more thing - my first poster I need to have done by June 1 for our township fair so if you can send stuff ASAP I would really appreciate it!
