INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Bummer...

Maybe you have a tree in your yard you could have them cut ...then you'd get the chips for sure!

Seriously, though, might just need to call them every once in awhile and remind them.

Haven't been on for bit with work and all. So mad come home and find a dead chicken then 4 more and 9 missing. Neighbors dog got them and killed them on. I confronted neighbor and he was nice and apologetic and offered to pay for loss. I didn't take any money from him. They just starting laying 2 weeks ago got them in early February. Makes me mad out at least 400$ on them plus future worth for selling eggs. Mainly how much time I spent watching them and all of their personalities. I had one with wry neck took her 4 months to get over so I named her twisty and I spent a lot of time talking to her and she would move that crooked neck of hers at me like I was probably crazy. Up to know I only loss 1 chicken. Today I loose 14 out 16. Apparently the people that used to live at my house had same problem with the same dog.

Terrible. One time we had neighbor's dog getting in our back yard (fenced!) and chasing chickens. One injured badly. We called animal control. Next time, the dog killed a chicken. Called animal control, again. The 3rd time, the dog tore up our new landscaping we worked so hard on and broke our garden statue which was sentimental value, then chased chickens. Because we are in the country, neighbors think they can let their dogs run free sometimes.

Animal control called again. We told animal control we love dogs but we have shotgun by door and if it gets after our chickens again, we aren't responsible for what happens to the dog. I am not sure I could actually harm a dog but 3 times seeing that black lab after our chickens ahh my blood was boiling.

Animal control told neighbor he MUST control the dog, no more chances. Turns out the dog had been out on a spree and several other neighbors called the same day! We had asked neighbor before that and taken a cake over though he was very rude, told DH he would buy him a frozen chicken that it was "just a chicken" we made the cake to show we forgave, including his rotten attitude and lack of sincere apology. But 3rd time, that was it. These aren't "just chickens" to us.

Anyway, I am so sorry, I can't imagine. I hope something makes neighbor be responsible. I would have him make restitution also, they were worth that at least!

So Sorry for your loss. If it makes you feel better you are not the only one having dogs attack. Last week I had 3 different people call me needing chickens because of dogs.

If it was me I'd take him up on his offer to pay for them. You can search Craigslist or McMurry for pullet prices. Be sure to include shipping if you are giving him quotes for the hatchery started pullets.

As for my prices, basic pullets at the point of lay are $25. I'm thinking specialty pullets should cost about $5 more at least.

@dennislambert79 I am so sorry for what you are going through!

I can't imagine how upset and frustrated you are. "IMO" I agree with @chick rookie and the other supportive thread members that your neighbor should have to pay, which would make more of an impact on him. After he pays — or if he doesn't pay or take action to keep his dog contained in his yard, you should definitely report him and keep following up to make sure he corrects the problem.
@leslea I meant to respond to your earlier post asking if I like the adventure aspect to fossil/rock hunting, and the answer is YES. I find amazing fossils and rocks every day, which keeps me excited about the next find. Even though my finds aren't rare or valuable, they're unique and fascinating. I like the adventure of going to out of the way places, too.

@iamfivewire Thank you for your fossil/rock input! I am familiar with Petosky stones and have found some under my deck! I've been to Michigan many times, but unfortunately not in recent years. It's a beautiful state, especially this time of year when the weather is typically wonderful.
It's in the 90s here with dew points in the high 70s, so it's miserable outside! At least the rain either misses us completely or rains for a short time.
I just remind myself that it's better than wintertime. I remind the chickens that it's better than the snow that they despise!
MOLD
The dampness and humidity is enough to cause mold problems. I saw something weird in the far backyard and thought it must be a big dark pile of deer poop (I don't know what deer poop looks like, but it was too large for dog!) Then I happened to read a newspaper article today about slime mold, and that's what it must be. The article said not to hose down slime mold because it will just spread.
MULCH for PLANTS
Btw, when I recently posted photos of all the tiny mushrooms sprouting from our mulch, I found this online article that has good info about combatting fungi: Control of Nuisance and Detrimental Molds (Fungi) in Mulches and... I thought of @Leahs Mom when I read that diseased trees that are mulched may have pathogens that are harmful to plants. That's not a problem when using it inside coops, but the interesting part is that if you use it for plants, chicken poop (nitrogen) will kill the harmful pathogens. The article also mentions that mulch should be in pieces of 3/4" or more because finely chipped/ground mulch causes rot and other problems for plants. Again, chicken poop to the rescue! (of course you have to look up the correct amount).

I feel really bad for all of you with constant rain and flooding! Have any of you had issues with problem fungi?
@pipdzipdnreadytogo ~ Congrats on your BYC award!

Processing day is over here. Originally planed for yesterday, but my DH went into work so it got moved to today. I truly hope I do not get another 85% or more rooster season again for a long time. Its a lot more effort than the standard 50% roosters or less. First I tossed in 3 extra sets of eggs in hopes of getting some more females and second I now have more than double the roosters I need. The extra chicken dinners will be nice but the roosters are taking over my freezer planing and it looks like our fall pig will be out.

As for the rain, the weather site is saying it will take a break on Wed and Thursday. So just maybe we will be able to mow the 2 sections of our yard that need it the most. I'm really getting nervous about a local hay shortage. If anyone sees good hay for sale, or has some of their own, please message me.

Awh, y'all are too much! :hugs

Here is a Crash duck as my thanks. :D

The moment he chose not to be a big, outside ducky yet. (Seriously, the hens lurking nearby looking for treats were not helping his attitude toward this pen, either...)

The moment he decided it wasn't so bad here after all...

The moment he realized this patch of grass was edible, too?

'He' has been making some suspiciously feminine noises as of late... But I don't feel experienced enough yet to say for sure whether he's a girl or not, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for now. :fl

well shoot it didn't quote the right one... oh well The lime says barn lime too, so do ya think it would hurt my goats? Anyone ever use it in a goat house? I'm glad you posted that about the lime, I didn't know. I know farmers use it in fields, but didn't know I could use it in my coops. I need to get rid of lots of flys. How long does it keep the flys away? would it be ok with Juveniles?
Thanks again for posting it.
Its safe, IMO I use it a lot. Its a good drying agent, and adds minerals to where you spread it. Also seems to neutralize ammonia. Flies do not like it one bit.

The little runt rooster did not make it :-(

Oh no, I am so sorry to hear.

Stray dog owners are my biggest peeve, and makes me so angry! I am sooo terribly sorry. I would make a police report to document. If this is ongoing, its not going to stop.. costing money will wake them up.
