Hello everyone!

I just moved back to Indiana from the east coast, and will be living in Fishers come late April. I'm interested in getting some chicks to raise on my own so that they'll be very docile and pet-able. My only real obstacle is that I have to get a chicken coop approved by the Neighborhood Association before I can build that or a fence. And that's got me a little nervous. Any advice on dealing with NRs or where I can find some female chicks of a docile and friendly breed?

I would suggest showing a coop design that matches your house in color and style. The big thing is they don't want an eye sore in the neighborhood. It needs to look very Martha Stewart. Make sure to stress how quiet hens are. Show them pictures of some chickens you might keep. Make sure they are attractive birds. Something like a silkie might even make them see the birds more as pets. That should help your cause. Remember, most people have a hard time visualizing things they have never seen. Make a professional presentation with lots of large pictures. Good luck!

Very good advice! There are plenty of good sites with pics and building plans for those types of coops. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!

Gienahclarette~ Kiniska has great suggestions. Another angle: You might also record kids playing and screaming and dogs barking. Both are much louder than chickens. Some birds, like mockingbirds, are pretty loud. Leaf blowers and weed eaters are expecially loud. People aren't used to hearing chickens like they're used to hearing other outdoor sounds-- ones that can really be annoying. The only times that my girls are actually loud is when one of them lays an egg and they have to announce it or when they are in the coop getting ready for sleep and have to argue (every night) about who is sitting where. Also, when are loud, it is for shorter periods-- maybe 5-10 mins -- than the above list of noisemakers usually last.

I live in a subdivision (luckily not with a NA), but I keep my next door neighbors happy by occasionally giving them eggs. : - )

Silkie Roo and Amerucanas around him. I just let them out for the first time today. They was all suppose to be hens but I think I got a roo in the mix. It has more red and it feathers are drooping more. He is 2nd in from the right. You can only see its tail end but you can tell it has more red.


Silkie Hen oh and you can see one of my kittens in the back ground. LOL


This is my 2 new Pekin Ducks. 1 is bigger than the other but they are the same age. Hopefully 1 is a hen and the other a drake.

Beautiful silkie, how about I send a NN roo over and we set some showgirls! All of my silkies are black and blues. I'm just not that interested in the darker types. .. Really like the hollowed out stumps for added playground! How did you do that?
