Quote: I do some processing days here too. You are welcome to come one weekend, and learn. I don't have a plucker yet unfortunately.

I bought a new chicken today and it slipped past me out of the cage...45 minutes later, as I am crawling out of my neighbors large pine tree, he and his wife return home for lunch. The look on their faces where priceless...I could here him laughing before he even turned in the driveway...she was asking what it was. I said it's a chicken, she said ohhhh. She was terrified of it at first and tried to feed it bread. They spent their lunch break helping me try to wrangle her. I literally had to call in reinforcements from down the street...finally had enough hands to catch her. I'll be out of eggs for a month trying to repay everyone!!
Goodness, little excitement for sure!

Had a great visit with @ellymayRans today while I handed her the mille fleur D'Uccle roo. Just know he's going to be ecstatic to have some of his very own lady friends and a place where he's not the smallest thing in the yard. EllymayRans also expressed some interest in a male buff/splash Silkie I received from @chickrookie earlier this summer (because hers is a jerk, and this little guy is super sweet and the color she's looking for). I really love Silkies, but something in the area has been picking them off the past few weeks, and I think he might be safer with her since--whatever this predator is--has a marked taste for my Silkies (has never take off with anything else).

I had constant predator issues with them, and when the tiny hawks got into a cage that was it for me. Adored them but they just don't fit into our plans.
Quote: Glad you are enjoying them! They will always stay here, i just adore them.
Totally agree, racin has an awesome setup from coops to processing.

After seeing how the dark Cornish dressed out I'm thinking pretty hard about adding some of them to my flock next year as well. I'm considering a smaller coop for raising some of my own meat birds. Thinking Cornish and Bresse will be added here next year

I really like the idea of raising some birds for meat that can also add some eggs to the daily basket. I've raised a batch of Cornish X for the freezer but I didn't care for the extra mess, health problems as they mature, etc, they just weren't like regular "chickens" to me. The dark Cornish I saw of Racin's dressed out like a Cornish X, they just took a little longer to get their weight. I don't mind having a flock of "meat birds" that provide eggs and I can just process a few here and there as needed

I've been doing a lot of thinking about the birds that are staying and or going here this fall. Las year I kept a bunch of extra birds/roos/breeds that I didn't really need to. I want to get my total number of mouths to feed thru the winter down this year.

I'm keeping my Lavendar orps for sure, along with the young, black split to lavender cockerels I'm growing out.

Keeping the silkies I have, going to try to add to this flock next year, especially showgirls.

Modern game bantams are staying. They are by far the most personable, people friendly birds I have.

I have few cream crested legbars that are going to stay. I'm going to be trying to build this flock next year.

I'm up in the air about my Polish. I am down to one roo and one hen but thinking I'm going to try and add to this flock next year.

Midget white turkeys are staying, they are my first turkeys and I like them. I have 2 toms and 2 hens, one tom has been named "Thanksgiving" I won't be feeding him over the winter.

They are a very calm, docile bird too. My younger cornish roo is a real pet, stands on your lap and likes neck rubs. He will walk right over and stand on my foot for attention. Impressively compact, heavy bird. I like the idea of Bresse x Dark cornish, I think that is a good combo! I saw some of the bresse processed last year, very nicely sized finished bird as well.
Cornish cross are messy. I do mine just like a regular chicken here, coops at night and free range during the day. I found that if they eat fermented feed they are not as messy and smelly. Really social too, its funny seening the "thunder chickens" loping towards you lol! You can hear the feet stomping I swear.

I didn't realize you were someone else from on here! That was me processing some extra birds with Racinchickens. Should have introduced yourself! You saw me processing my extra Lavender Orp roo. I got 8 chicks from Jchny2000 late winter, had awesome luck to start with. 3 boys and 5 girls out of the bunch. Then lost one pullet to an accident (she got a foot caught in the fench/gate) and lost another pullet that just didn't thrive. Of the 3 boys, one got taken by a raccoon, I'm keeping the nicest, and you saw the last one. The LO are quickly becoming one of my favorites. I'm going to begin transitioning my entire layer flock to LO.

I guess I just needed some other chickens to compare yours too. I didn't see roo when I looked at him. I'm sure he'll be happy with his ladies at your place.

Racinchickens has it all figured out when it comes to processing birds! My first time using the "auto plucker" (not sure what its offical name is) was sweet!! Entire process went really smoothly, thanks again for allowing me to use your equipment!

I would have I was just kinda frozen slightly from I'm kinda shy when not the seller lol and y'all looked so into what y'all were doing I felt out of place and no offence I would of had issues "processing" that bird he was so beautiful sorry I'm really just got into the chicken business and haven't "processed" any birds at all I just sell the ones I don't like even if I had a bird I wanted to process I'm not sure my preggo would let me

NO SUCH LUCK!!!!! HA HA HA it was great!!!! And DH made the whole thing so that I could move it tear it down and put it back up as I needed to all by my self. NO HELP NEEDED... Got a genetics question. I just got an e-mail from one of my hatching eggs customer with a pic of a scissor beaked black chick, I also hatched one, another black chick. So is it in the gene? and if it is would it be the Roo or the hen that is throwing the black chicks? None of the other eggs hatched from that pen has had any problem. So I'm thinking It's the hen???? If it was the Roo wouldn't all the chicks have that problem?

didnt have this till I got a new Roo. but like I said.. I would think chicks other than the black ones would have it also. I would think.

Quote: Its ok. We have several members thats not comfortable with the "bad day" and fully understand why. I do not process my geese for example, they are my pets. Same for the goats. Its hard to make that decision. Many members on our thread do not, the flock they keep are pets also. Everyone here has a different outlook. I encourage it. We all are entitled to keep our flocks and livestock how we want to.
