These 2 little weeners are yorkshires. Both are barrows (neutered) so they will be food pigs. I also raise Hampshires but they are a slower growing hog. I had to get these 2 so I have some ready for spring, my Hamps will be breeder age by then. They are now, but I am not farrowing (birthing piglets) over the winter lol.

Always been a fan of the hamps myself. Those and duroc. Mostly did crosses when I raising them for fair and such, but had a few hamps and durocs. Don't blame you for not farrowing through the winter. When are you targeting spring litters for?

I will probably wait til 3rd heat, and should put me around late february, early march. Its like 3 months 3 weeks 3 days if I remember correctly. We were buying piglets a couple times a year, and it is getting harder to find, and afford them! I have had 10 now, and am ready to go the next step and raise them here. Love the hogs, out of all 10 I had one that was less social, but none have been aggressive. I really work hard towards keeping them very human imprinted. I still do not fully trust any hog, but I can read the body language pretty well.

I understand that. I'm wanting to get that garden pig next year, and worry that I'm going to miss the "fair window" because I don't want market weight to be hit until September or October, not July or August, and those were always January/February hogs. See feeder pigs on CL from time to time, and in the free ad paper, but not nearly like you used to. It's frustrating. I don't think I ever had a hog that was anti-social. Most were better than my friend's dogs. Boars are tricky critters, but I never had problem with a barrow, and they are pretty expressive critters.

Are you going to have swine for sale in the spring? Pendleton isn't that far...

At this point I'm just looking for a feeder hog. Fair is well in my rear view as well. Just want to feed a hog for the winter off garden scraps and feed. And would much rather find someone breeding like you are than a commercial cast off.

I have been getting some winterizing done, but not complete yet. Got the modern games a nice indoor setup in the barn with some supplemental heat. They seem to be enjoying it so far. Still have some work to do on other coops. Luckily we're having this nice weather, I hope for a few more weeks like this.

Mee to... It's so much easier to do when your not freezing.

What kind of piglets? I'm a swine addict. Miss having hogs around every summer from my fair days.

I'm 60% of the way to convincing the wife to feed out a "garden pig" next year with our scraps from the garden, letting the hog till it when the season is past, then magically turning him into bacon...

Still some work to do...

Good news is that Puff the Magic (tom) is finally strutting, puffing up, gobbling and walking around like he might actually mean to do his manly duties in the near future. Girls aren't sure what to make of it.

Eggs under the broody Australorp are still doing fine. They won't hatch by my youngest's birthday (the 29th) but should in a few weeks.


*Edited to add: I think I might rename her "Black Betty" because "Black Betty had a child! Bam-ba-lam!"

Originally, I had another Australorp named "Black Betty" but rehoming her left me with "Bam-ba-lam" and "Cleopatra Schwartz", who was supposed to be a Jersey Giant but isn't much bigger as yet than the Australorps. I'd rather not rename Cleopatra, so I guess I'll wait and name Black Betty's children "Bam-ba-lam" and other assorted colorful names.
