INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Since we were discussing NN/Turkens, got a couple pics today. He and the black Sumatra roo are discussing who is more handsome lol!

@Indyshent your roo moved in with the NNs!

This brown hen produces 100% NN chicks. Its crazy how red her face is, I would have though roo if i didn't collect her eggs everyday!
Since when did you get into Sumatras? They are gorgeous boys

I had a crazy dream about Cordon Bleu (the roo in your pic). In the dream, I was crying my eyes out, wanting that silly rooster back, and I was all worried that you'd eaten him, and I'd never be able to see him again or watch him dance around the yard. Really odd dream, but I'm glad to know he's found some new friends and is still alive, in any case. Really hoping you've gotten to see some of his antics. I've got too many roos up here, and I'm terrible about calibrating No-Crow collars (cannot seem to get them on Mag right). He'll likely throw some handsome Easter/olive eggers for you

He's one of only two roosters I've ever had that would voluntarily get into my lap or fly onto my shoulder. Didn't really want me to pick him up, but he wanted to fly on my shoulders and sit on my head. Silly boy.

I need a bigger coop

Thank you! Roos don't make the freezer here unless they become a problem, like attacking hens. Or, if they are purchased for that reason, of course like the CX. Blu is a sweet rooster and I love his colors. I have 2 gold/buff hens picked just for him once we get coops established.
Bacon is still here too! Just adore him, poor guy is having leg issues tho. When he stands up, you can tell his knee joints are hurting. He is flat huge! His molt is over and he looks great. I will just be happy to have time with him as long as we can. DH says Bacon is HIS turkey puppy lol. My Sumatra are from @SallyinIndiana and they are just stunning. 2 of my roosters look Ayam Cemani, jet black and beautiful. Super calm for the breed, I have some blacks, splash. Getting more pullets from her hopefully this week. I am really liking the breed personality. And they are just total eye candy to look at too.

anyone want pic's???? Cause I got'em.

in case ya cant see what this is: I took some metal skirting ( from an old trl that had been tore down ) brought out the front of the Silkie house about 3 1/2' used step-in-poles ( for electric fencing ) to attach the to to hold them in place so the wind and general rough housing wont tear it down, then I covered the top and 1/2 way down with a tarp. I have a heat light wired up on the outside of the house pointed in, so that if itt falls it will land on the ground. I don't see how it could, I have wired better than fort knots, but ya never know. So anyway snow free zone 1 complete.

Here is the new Bantam pen and house, we put them next to the Silkies so we can keep the little's in 1 area and the Silkies pen is already covered with deer netting so it wont be hard to cover this pen. Hawks and Falcon ... your out of luck!!!
Just got to find something to make them a snow free zone with. BTW that's 2 more of those wood crate I got off the same guy.

This was a rabbit hutch I got for free and converted it to chicken use, put a perch in it and a kick board to keep the bedding in when the doors are open. It has 2 sides but the wind kept blowing my tarp over 1 side so I gave up and just took the pic's. I closed the bottom in with small holed wielded wire so chicks could eat and the biggens couldn't chase them off. but now the chicks cant fit in there either but they refuse to go to the big coop. Bob was guarding it... lol

I am beginning to think my billy was sterile, They should have been showing by now.... I'm glad cause I don't want anymore babies here.

My WR's been pulling up netting from round bales and the girls are having a blast with all the turned up dirt.

Sweet Pea is camera shy. Bob sure aint he even sounded off for me.

no album is complete without Waddles.... and his woman if she ever grows up..

Hope ya'll enjoyed.
See ya

Welcome!

What kinds of peeps do you have?

At the moment, just the two in the avi. One leghorn and one ancona. Ancona not laying yet. Started with those two plus a lakenvelder and campine about a month ago but just these two remain.

Winter project is a new bigger coop (though the small starter coop will serve as a great transition brooder for spring chicks and if needed to separate birds or maybe a breeder/brooder pen some day) and figuring out exactly what is being added to the flock next spring, though I think that has pretty well worked itself out.

Aside from daily stuff, hows winterizing going for everyone? I have my piglets on heat, since they are so young. Still have my maran babies inside, they are going out during the day only. Have a couple last hatches on duck eggs. All thats left after that is quail and I will hatch them all winter.

How are the quail doing? Did you start with eggs recently? I hope you have some breeders going by this spring, I'd really like to raise some.

I have been getting some winterizing done, but not complete yet. Got the modern games a nice indoor setup in the barn with some supplemental heat. They seem to be enjoying it so far. Still have some work to do on other coops. Luckily we're having this nice weather, I hope for a few more weeks like this.

What kind of piglets? I'm a swine addict. Miss having hogs around every summer from my fair days.

I'm 60% of the way to convincing the wife to feed out a "garden pig" next year with our scraps from the garden, letting the hog till it when the season is past, then magically turning him into bacon...

Still some work to do...

They lock down the 23rd~hatch date 26th! Some of these eggs were too big for my quail trays. Really impressed! I will definitely be in full swing on hatches by then. Just holler when you are ready.
Quote: Lol its chicken math! You just seem to keep getting one more..

X2 working on it today myself!

Quote: These 2 little weeners are yorkshires. Both are barrows (neutered) so they will be food pigs. I also raise Hampshires but they are a slower growing hog. I had to get these 2 so I have some ready for spring, my Hamps will be breeder age by then. They are now, but I am not farrowing (birthing piglets) over the winter lol.

If I had more land and more fencing then a pig would be on my list. I don't think I'd breed them but just buy a piglet every so often. For now I get my pork from a guy in Franklin.
Yes, breeding is a task. We are just not ready for it yet, DH has to build a farrowing area for my sow. She has just turned 7 months, so I have to split them up or I will have unwanted surprises lol.
