INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Wow--been trying to play catch-up. Got really behind with getting ready to start the new term and dealing with the weather. Enjoyed reading posts from those of you who are students as I am dealing with the other side of the issue--this is what I'm sure some of my students would like to do with me:

Condolences to everyone who has had losses recently. I know how hard it is to lose a friend.

@Janet congratulations on your well-deserved recognition!

I have been a slug after offering to help with the member list;

anyone who is new or has changes, if you'll pm me. I promise to follow through with my duties.

Some of my breeders have been laying, and it's really frustrating not to be able to incubate. At my old house I had a basement and could brood there, but now I don't have a warm area and have to wait a while longer. Bummer!

I just wanted to stop in for a bitty bit and thank @jchny2000 again for the three lovely Coturnix ladies. DH and I have gotten such a kick out of them. He started playing Alien: Isolation (it's a neat sequel of sorts to the original Alien movie). Funniest thing, is that they all hang out on the end closest the TV and watch DH play on the big screen. Jump scares work on them, but they keep coming back to watch more.

One in particular likes to come around the side of the tank and watch me do homework and such. She has a piercing gaze, almost like she's trying to read my future or something. They're so cute, and even though they haven't resumed laying yet, I think they're warming up to being office pets.

Really digging quail ownership

I guess I am within the 6 mile "buffer" zone of the turkey farm. I guess I should expect to see some visitors this weekend if they're looking for all poultry. Kind of freaks me out...AI found 4.5 miles from my house!
Oh dear. I hope you and your flock make it out of this mess safe. It's a tragedy that so many poor turkeys are going to have to die, but...

I'll be praying for you and your feathered buddies.

I'm using my iPad, which doesn't work well with this site, so I'm hoping my post works.
Not sure of the reasoning behind it. Does raise a very good point.. So far the claims are that its not contagious to humans. Does make you wonder...

@jchny2000 I hate to say that I wonder how they euthanize 60,000 turkeys! :(
@amwchicken-- That's scary to have that happen so close! How many chickens do you have?
@Faraday40 - Your Cuddles is beautiful! I'm guessing she's a Lavender Orp?
@iamfivewire - So sorry to hear about your Iowa Blue roo! I remember him surviving the dog attack.

Just wanted to say thanks for the condolences. I obviously was still very emotional when I posted.
Pipd--We have all been there--and understand the shock and horror of finding a beloved pet murdered. I can't imagine finding a hawk on top of her, but I guess it's good to know what happened instead of imagining all sorts of scenarios. Our thread members are so comforting when bad things happen! (And good things, too of course).

I hate to say I heard that they sometimes incinerate the birds, alive, when these AI outbreaks occur. I hope they do something more humane though.

Hi all it's been awhile! We've been busy as usual around here. Made a trip to Lafayette with 4 cows in the ice last Monday, SO glad DH was driving!

Probably because they can't transport them to process them.

I read last spring that they smother them with foam then compost the carcasses for fertilizer. Doesn't sound very pleasant no matter how they do it, dropping dead suddenly sounds better to me.

I don't understand why if it's wild birds that spread it how it's ending up in all these bio secure confinement operations?

That was also my ? last year when the AI started. I thought most commercial poultry were kept inside & apart from any wild birds. (or at least the big waterfowl) I suppose those tiny sparrows could find a way in (like mice), but I didn't think they were as high risk as the wild waterfowl. I think it could also spread to poultry via equipment, deliveries, people's clothes/shoes, etc. That's probably a big reason they don't process any of the birds w/o symptoms & simply kill all to contain the spread.

Sad news! My DH let the chickens out this morning and found Adeline dead at the bottom of the coop. DH said that Screech was frantically making crowing noises. I think Adeline died of a broken heart from losing her BFF, Eliza. I examined her carefully and didn’t find any problems. She hadn’t acted extremely depressed to the point of not moving or eating, but she had just acted indifferent. Not really interested in anything. I had hoped that she and Bonbon would reconnect, but Adeline needed time to mourn. Eliza was docile and sweet, but could assert herself when it came to eating. She will be missed.

I’ve had Adeline’s body laying out for the flock to see. I will bury her near Eliza when I have my flock distracted elsewhere. I can’t believe I only have six chickens.

I corrected Eliza's age—It was incorrect on her previous death notice.
