INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Today was a great day with my son as we had a Jace and Mommy day and he was spoiled rotten today! It's the beginning of my spring break and I let my son take a day off from preschool. Well our great day turned into a sad one when we got home!

When we got home we needed to do our evening chores of collecting the eggs, feeding the chickens and cats, and other chores. As we were walking out to the coop my fiancé was yelling at us to wait. He told me that Jace shouldn't go in the coop and wanted to prepare me that I'm going to see something and will explain once he got Jace doing something else. I walked into the coop and saw a lot of feathers, white feathers. I collected 2 eggs and looked around for my chickens. By that time my fiance was walking towards me and told me everything that happened. Our rooster was killed by a hawk. When he got home and changed into his work clothes and went outside he noticed the chickens were going crazy so he walked to the coop, walked inside and about got nailed by a hawk who flew out of the coop, looked down and saw our rooster laying there motionless. He buried him close to our Great Dane that passed away over a week ago. Thankfully our Rooster did his job and saved all of our hens. Looks like we will be investing in some netting to enclose the chickens run and prolly will only be able to free range when someone's home. We have never had any problems with any predators before! Just sucks that our Rooster is gone!
I am horribly sorry. I have been through this too, and its painful. When its time to replace your rooster, many of us will have one and often free. Just be sure to choose one thats human social so its less difficult for the transition.

Piglets are growing fast and becoming social, DS the mom is anxious to be back outside though. She really wanted out today! Pushing a 250 plus pound pig back into the trailer is not an easy task! They are eating solid food already. All 3 are boys and will be ready to go in less than 2 weeks. Running around rooting, grunting and playing already.
Aww so adorable! Glad they are doing so well!

Our main man died in a dog attack not too long ago. I'm glad you had a great day with your son and that your fiance was able to spare your son the worst of it.

Second all of this. Pretty much any and everyone on here is willing to part with a free awesome rooster at any given moment. I know I've got bunches of them.

2 large goose nests, now brooding and not leaving the nests. Moved food and water between them, lots of hissing! Good Mamas. Huey my oldest scovy hen is up to 6 eggs in her nest.
My Chocolate orps are trying to go broody! Am collecting every egg they lay. The rooster is awesome, he sits with each lady while she is laying. He gets vocal when I open the lid, but stays right by his hen. Really enjoying the breed. 2 of the girls were smashed on the nest box earlier, took both eggs.
Guineas are earnestly looking for nesting spots. Saw one, another oldest girl Quasey in the duck nest, moving hay around. A second hen is looking at an old steel bench with cubbies and shelves. Going to have chick overload in a month, LOL!

The more I think about it, the more promising it sounds to fix the old coop into a new brooder and let some of your peachicks and goslings and other oddballs here for a little while (enough to hold me over at least until Indy Rezone passes and get some familiarity with the breeds). Blargh, just thought about it, your babies won't be hatched before Rezone kicks in...

Thanks! That's what's a little hard about this is that he was soooooo friendly! And he was part of the group that we adopted after our friend passed away.

We can move what breeds and species there long enough to grandfather you, then move back. Its flexible, can do what you need to do.
Super grateful, but I don't think a fullsize goose could make it here without killing my kitten. We'll work something out I'm sure. It's not like I need any of these, but I kinda like to stick it to the man in this case. I've heard and seen so many great things about geese that it's really hard not to want one for permanent. o hear some people, you would think potential home invaders are more afraid of geese than they are of dogs.

That's heartbreaking--I'm so sorry to hear it.
