INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Quote: Oh wow, that's so crazy. I think its got a lot to do with the lines, and the individual chicken too. Most of my EE hens will brood If I let them.

Thank you I really appreciate it. American buff are so gentle and docile. She is scared but has been pretty accepting to what I've done so far. DH is not happy to see a goose in the house lol. If she was outside I know she won't recover. Will be looking for a large crate ASAP so I can put her in my Brooding trailer.
I have your airport big crate and am bringing it up to you tomorrow.
Thanks so much, hopefully there won't be any more emergencies.

So awesome to see you post!! Thanks so much for the updates!

Has been a while since I have posted! Hope everyone is doing well and that your flocks have made it through the winter.

Some updates from the homestead:

Here are some of our silkies visiting their neighbors. The chickens in the coop are ISA browns. The ISA browns are back to laying really well since we have more daylight and we are getting a lot of eggs each day.

We had 7 eggs last year from the peahen and all 7 hatched and survived (so far). So we now have 10, and really hoping our white peahen lays this year for the first time.

My husband's fav girl, who we got at Rural King last year!

Went to Florida last month and got to feed these budgies, they were all over our feet picking off seeds we stepped on!

We got a new puppy last summer, named Stitch. He is an English Shepherd.

Here he is all grown up! We are in advanced training classes at Petsmart now, hoping he can get his certification as a caregiver dog.

Walked past this poor bee the other day on our fence (we keep honeybees) and she flew right into the barb wire and was stuck! Strange things happen sometimes.

Goodness, Loved your pictures except for the poor bee. Adore your peafowl! And the Stitch is a beautiful dog now

Group photo, they had spilt their water so I was drying them off.

2.Chocolate or black barred (aka rippled)
3. Chocolate pied!
4 & 5 I see a black pied and a chocolate pied!
Lovely babies

Congrats!

Now for my own babies!

Mama Margaret is still sitting a lot, but the babies are getting more and more active! Is it me, or are Silkie babies cuter than other breeds?
love.gif
They just are so adorable when they're bobbling out around Mama!! (Although, I suppose I'm biased--these are my first real 'grandchickens'.

Here are the oldest 3 drinking together!

The one looking over its shoulder in that picture is such a little stinker! I've decided to name him (or her) Bennie, short for Benjamin (or Benjamina

).

Here's Mama watching over the babies while they eat!

The one in the food dish isn't taking any sass about it.

Mama and babies again.

She kept lifting up and settling down over and over again, like she was trying to convince them to go under for nap time.

Pipd they are too precious

feeling pretty sad...Dealing with a goose injury tonight. Doing my regular daily rounds and noticed Gracie, my adult Buff American goose hen was missing. Finally heard her in the unclaimed portion of the property. I saw her neck looked dark. When I got to her, I just cried. Gracie appears to have caught her neck in something. She has her neck completely bare to the flesh, no skin. I have only seen an injury this severe one other time in all the years I have kept birds. Will not post pictures its very upsetting. She is in the spare bathroom tub now. We have started baby aspirin, oxytetracycline and electrolites. Blukote on her neck.
I know she's in pain, and am checking on her hourly. She is drinking but will not eat. Just sick over it.
My American Buff are timid, wary with people so its been a big challenge already trying to care for her. She is drinking the water at least so the medication is getting into her. I try to human imprint every bird I own for this very reason.. emergencies. The ones I take in as adults are so much more a challenge.
If you need some help, I've tended pretty much identical injuries on that CX hen I dropped off on your place. Her neck eventually healed, but it was the bumblefoot that screwed her. The neck will require frequent changes of bandages but I've got tons of rolled bandages and coflex. The biggest obstacle for us was keeping the bandage on the right place without having it turn around (the pad likes to be on the bottom by the throat instead of on the back of neck.

Quote: Thank you, I know you will jump in and help, appreciate your friendship so much! Gracie passed between 330-4am. She was still taking water at 330, but was terribly weak. DH got up at 4 and she was gone

. My other 2 buffs are terrified so am now convinced its the owl. They will not coop up and I left Big Boy the embden gander out with them to help watch them. Going to be another long night.

aww sorry jchny2000, hope you figure out for sure what attacked/injured her.

I've had a few different hens go broody over the years, I'm starting to think it depends on the personality/stubbornness of each.

Congrats on all the babies. If anyone knows of silkie babies not too far from me, let me know. My daughter really wants one again, and I'd like to get one before our week of LF babies get any bigger. I may check TSC again, in the bantam bin. But that's hit and miss.

Getting geared up to build my chicken tractor soon. If it were just a little warmer....

I had decided earlier this year against hatching out chicks this year...but gosh silkies are the cutest!! May need to rethink this. ;)

They are awfully cute, aren't they? :love Hard to resist those little faces!!

Mine came as part of an assortment from my very first batch of chickens.  I got them from Murray McMurray.   But I've seen phoenix listed as available a couple of times from indiana breeders and I've seen them for sale at some of the poultry shows too.

Thanks, I may have to look into them! If nothing else, they're definitely on the ever-growing Want List. :D

Will be back on later to catch up. Thanks everyone for your kind words, unfortunately Gracie passed away between 330-4am. I feel she had too much blood loss as severe as her wounds were. Just devastated, my geese are my pets. I'm not convinced it wasn't a predator, I suspect a great horned owl if it was.

:hugs I am so sorry to hear this. :( You did everything you could.

Happy birthday to my mom!!! we have 2 little peepers!!!! :jumpy :jumpy waiting for 6 more!!:celebrate :yiipchick

Haha, sometimes things are too exciting for just a few smilies!! :D Congrats, and happy birthday to your mom!

Ah, I know, it's almost too much! :love The set of little squirts!

And definitely agree on chicken math! I'd be drowning in chicks if I didn't have as strong of will as I do in the feed store!!

Thanks. I know, spring is sooo close! I snuck in and candled one of the goose nests. One dud, there are at least 13 growing! I do miss Silkies but I know I don't have a safe set up for them here.

It feels so much like spring already! I say we shorten winter and just call it spring! Good vibes for your goose eggs!! :fl

My Buffs are mourning. I guess I am too, They finally have settled back in and all the geese are asleep. I have never seen them pack so tightly together before. Spent the day looking for any evidence of Gracie having been caught in something. Theres nothing I can find. Convinced its the owl. My donkey has chased it off numerous times. We are moving the geese into her pasture.

Chick radar! Fort Wayne Rural King had tons of them when I was in there for feed this afternoon! I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but what I remember is red sexlinks, Cornish cross, production Rhode Island reds, Australorps, Barred Rocks, White Leghorns, just a few gold laced Wyandottes and Easter-eggers (both mislabeled  ), and Columbian Rocks! That one surprised me--those are on my Want List as well! I was able to resist, though. ;) Oh, and there were pearl Guinea keets as well.

Those of you with broody experience, I had a question. Mama Margaret has been off the nest with the babies for a little less than 2 days now (she came off at around noon yesterday) and is still just sitting where I leave her in the morning and not moving all day except to shift around a few inches. I don't think she'd even be eating or drinking if I wasn't putting her right by the food and water dishes. Should I be worried about her not getting up and showing the babies how to scratch and stuff this long after she's come off the nest? She is still able to walk, because if I move her away from the babies she goes right back to them, but she's just not doing it by herself. She just still seems broody like she thinks she needs to incubate eggs. I ended up having to show the babies the food and water myself because she's just sitting there and clucking for them. She only started tidbitting at the food for them once I showed it to her. The babies are coming out from under her to eat and drink, and then going back under her for warmth just fine. I'm just worried about Mama now!

:hugs Sounds like your donkey is a pretty awesome livestock guardian. Hope that owl thinks twice about going after your geese from now on!! I would think they would be too big of prey, but then the hen that I lost to a hawk earlier this year was huge by comparison to it and great horned owls are huge as well! Determined things, they are. :somad
