INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

That's a long post?! BWAHAHAHAHA! I can't step in a text box without writing a book lately!

Always love oodles of pictures! We're building a shed/coop, too, but are running into every problem imaginable.

Sorry to hear that. I was surprised this went as well as it did.

well yesterday came and went. We went to the new house to start cleaning before moving any of our stuff in and people were still there!!! said their stuff was still there and they weren't leaving till they got it all out. The Sheriff came and made them leave and I guess they came back afterwards. get this!!! they had an order from the judge... they get to stay till the 3rd!!!!! But the Sheriff had an order to remove them if need be!!!!

1 black and 1 partridge silkie. Hatched in the past couple of days. I need to get the partridge chcik from the garage brooder and put with these guys inside since losing the other little chick.
So precious!

@jchny2000 i thought all of the females looked at the least 2 years of age but it can be difficult to gauge, just because she acts scared doesn't mean she's not of age. My hen was like that her first year, this year not so much but then again? ?
Super cool on the pen progress and eggs! Look forward to those pics!

@atrueb00 regarding the silkie egg sales, mine get bought up (all bantam eggs) once i advertised to folks how great they are for use as hardboiled for little kids, in salads or as mini deviled egg appetizers. Now they request them. You giving them free should have been treated as a sample...lol..then hook them!!

Disturbing this morning i awoke to my little possible blue egg laying frizzle/silkie cross that recently hatched...well it disappeared! I have looked all morning and no signs of it. The large GQF brooder is in the garage on a very large wooden lid that is partially covering the large wooden adult silkie pen. All i can think of is it slipped through the feeder hole and fell through the netting that covers the remaining silkie pen and they killed and ate it. No signs of it. I used a flashlight looking around things, but would expect it to be frantically chirping. Its not cold enough to have killed it for just being away from heat for several hours????? I can't stop looking for it though, just freaking me out!

Better news: i did wake up to another hatched partridge silkie. I have 4 blue eggs left and 4 silkie eggs in the bator yet to hatch but one of those silkie eggs is cracked from me dropping the lid on it, its still developing though. While looking for the wee chick i did find that my last spring blue silkie is now broody!! When i kicked her out of the nest box thinking maybe the chick lucked out and slipped under her, nope, but heck she's sitting on more blue eggs and silkie eggs!! Not letting them range and not having suitable outdoor pen for them yet is not helping avoid broodies! Leaving for FL in a week and i hate to think how many she's going to end up with!!

Everyone else is good. No turkey eggs yet that ive seen. Girls cut back on laying again...got 4 eggs yesterday!?! Granted i have at least 7 dozen i need to take to the hair salon to sell but i thought things would improve.

Thats so sad. But congrats on the new chick.
I am pretty new to peas, I had some a few years back, but they went to the neighbors when Dad had open heart. Was just not home enough. Trying to learn more about them. So maybe they will surprise me this year!
Baseball has begun!! 10 yr old and 7 yr old, different leagues, different fields...sigh....had evaluations last night from 6-8. I love watching and them playing, i just dread the thought of them having different practice nights putting us having baseball every night with games on Saturday! We'll be lucky to have Sunday and maybe 1 night of the week thats not consumed by it!
Oh my, I remember those days!

Quote: They do get strong! We are hoping to get the rest of the wire to run electric fence this weekend. Double Stuff is loving being on the big open pasture! She lazes around, and follows the other animals. Bo, my buck wants her no where near me tho, and he butts her, then she nips him! They have reached a truce finally, and take turns for attention and carrots, lol. I plan to let my boar out once the wire is ran too. I need to work with the other sows more before I will release them.

Oh and using my Styrofoam bator as a hatcher, i added no water, reads 34-37% humidity and the partridge chick hatched this morning in there with no issues.

Editing: my external humidity guage reads that. The bator guage says 45%
Oh thats great!

@tmarsh83 i cant help but vote against a heat lamp in the coop. Its such a fire hazard. If you do, be sure to secure it in unimaginable ways!! How old again? Fully feathered? Breeds? I would wait out the 30's lows and pick a mid temp evening thats not below 50 and just put them out. They will keep each other warm. Obviously this is all dependant on the answers to the previous questions.

Looks great inside! Love the nest boxes specifically!

A lot of hard work, Nice job!

Everything Egg Cookbook Thread

Please help me put together an egg cookbook to help use up extra eggs during spring/summer. Otherwise, I may end up hatching more chicks out!

Great idea!! I will do some looking.

Sorry for that crazy long post...

Oh no, I loved it! I think you have a ton of great ideas. If you go with a heat lamp, I would attach it with strong wire in case the clamp fails.

First, thank you. I'm hoping the nest boxes work as intended.

Chicks are three weeks on Monday. Feathering fast but still have some fluff. Marans, australorps, delawares, new hampshires, and Sussex, and the suspected Cochin.

I know it's early, but they're moving around the brooder so freely, and I'd really like to get the brooder moved so I can get some work in the garage done.

I'm not sure why the lamp would be more a fire hazard in the coop than it currently is in my garage.

I want to get thru this weekend, but hoped when we hit the sixties again next week I could make it work. But know it might be too early.

@tmarsh83 its a fire hazard regardless of where it is. It should always be very secure, just in the coop you're not there nor is a fire alarm, so fire and your precious new coop, chicks and all that hard work, gone.

If its any where near your home there's that risk too.

That's all. ;)

Been busy since Monday finished my Coolerbator up and it works great holds 99 degrees well Before and the after got to move eggs in it Sunday
Do you have a fan inside? I just built one and have been using it for a few weeks, about to start work on number 2 this weekend. It took me a few tries to get things right. First attempt my thermostat was too far from the heat and the temp fluctuated too much. Caused some eggs not to hatch and a few to hatch with deformed feet. Moved the thermostat closer to the light and fixed that problem, temp only moves about 1.5 degree now. But then I had to move the fan some too because of hot spots inside. I cut down a electric turner for a Styrofoam incubator to fit my cooler, it only holds 28 eggs now but works well. I have a batch of silkies and bantam polish on day 9 and a few MW turkey eggs I just put in today. I should have number 2 done by next week and that will be my hatcher. I plan to take pictures of the procedure this time.
